“No! Isabelle must go to the pack healer first! I can’t let anything happen to her! Everything else is secondary!”
Ethan’s frantic, desperate roar was the last thing I heard before I slipped into unconsciousness. His wolf was in a frenzy.
Endless darkness enveloped me…
I felt like I’d had a long nightmare.
My wolf was whimpering in distress, sensing the danger I was in.
Upon waking, I saw Lydia, eyes red.
“Zoe, I just got back and heard about your accident. The pack healers said you had a massive internal wound, almost didn’t make it! I was terrified!”
Seeing her, my bottled–up resentment welled up.
My eyes reddened, and I couldn’t help but hug her. My wolf nuzzled against her, seeking comfort.
“Don’t worry, I’m okay…”
We hugged for a long time. Lydia gave me water, then, remembering the healer’s instructions, shifted to lighter topics.
“How was your life in the Ashen Land these past few years? Did my brother bully you? Didn’t you have a suitor? When can you introduce him to me? I’ll thoroughly vet him; if he’s bad for you, I won’t approve.”
My expression froze. My wolf growled softly at the memory.
“Lycan Chairman Gabriel is professional. He didn’t bully me. My suitor… we didn’t make it.”
Lydia didn’t expect it to end so soon. Fearing I was upset, she quickly consoled me.
“It’s okay; what’s done is done. Better luck next time! I know a lot of great he–wolves, I’ll introduce you!”
Before she could finish, the healer’s hut door opened, and Ethan walked in, his face grim.“Introduce who? No! None of those unmated he–wolves you know are suitable.”
Lydia instantly pouted at his immediate rejection.
“What unmated he–wolves? Brother, don’t be ridiculous! Do you think everyone is as devoted as you, hung up on Isabelle? Besides, when I introduce a suitor to my friend, why are you even interfering?”
Hearing this, Ethan’s temper flared, his voice laced with anger. His Alpha instincts flared and a possessive growl rumbled in his chest.
“I said no, means no. You can’t force a bond. Don’t meddle.”
Yes, bonds can’t be forced. It was only after four years that I finally understood this.
I smiled silently, squeezed Lydia’s hand, and calmly looked at him. “Lydia was just joking, Alpha Ethan. Is there something you need?“
Seeing me safe and sound, Ethan slightly relaxed. His wolf calmed down. He instinctively wanted to say, “I came to see you,” but changed his words.

“Nothing, Lydia heard about your accident and came to see you right away. I’m here to take her home and check on you.”
“Okay, brother, I’ll go home tonight. You should leave now. Don’t assign Zoe any pack duties after her severe injury.”
Lydia dismissed him.
Only the two of us remained. Lydia started praising Ethan again.
“He may seem harsh, but he’s good to you. The healer said you were on the brink of death yesterday, he summoned all the packs to donate blood to save you.”
