Chapter 101Â
Chapter 101Â
Kayla had barely finished speaking when Max slammed his fist down on the table with a sharp crackÂ
The cups on the table tipped over under the sudden impact. The water splashed everywhere, smearing the name Kayla had just written until it was no longer recognizable.Â
Meanwhile, Max’s face twisted with anger, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity.Â
Hearing the commotion, Elijah rushed in, alarm written across his face as he took in the scene. “What happened? What’s going on?”Â
Max’s gaze cut toward him like a blade, cold and merciless, as if it could pierce right through him. “Get out!”Â
The sheer force of his father’s presence made Elijah flinch. His body trembled before he could stop himself.Â
Never in his life had Elijah felt such overwhelming fury from his father.Â
For a brief moment, it was as if he had been thrown back to childhood, when his father stood in his prime,” sharp and commanding, a man who dominated every room he entered.Â
Elijah wanted to say more, but under Max’s chilling aura, all he could do was touch his nose awkwardly and retreat in silence. He slipped out of the room, muttering to himself in frustration, wondering what on earth had just happened.Â
Max pulled his gaze back to Kayla, his voice low and steely. “Tell me everything that has happened these past years. Leave nothing out.”Â
Kayla’s brows gave a faint tremor as she wondered, ‘Could it be that… he actually believes me now?’Â
Relief washed through her, and she began recounting the events of the past few years, picking out the parts that mattered most.Â
The moments passed in a blur, and by the time Kayla finished, a long while had already slipped by.Â
Max’s expression grew tighter and tighter, as though bound by an invisible net. Yet he did not erupt again. Instead, he grew calmer, his deep–set eyes flickering with emotions too layered to untangle.Â
He had never imagined that so much could have happened over the years. Everything Julian once feared had, one by one, become reality.Â
Max mused, ‘It was all because I was too weak. After that happened, I drowned in my own grief and pain, too afraid to face reality.Â
‘I never really tried to think through the whole thing or see the problems in it. That’s why so many years were wasted. And it also led to…Â
Max let out a weary sigh, his voice carrying a bitterness and regret he could never put into words. But he knew that regretting now would not change anything. All he could do was look forward.Â

I is youchersÂ
He slowly lifted his head, his expression heavy with resolve. “I’ll have someone investigate what happened back then. But as for what your mom asked me to help you with…”Â
Max lowered his gaze to his crippled legs and the frail, withered hands resting on his lap. A flicker of self- mockery and helplessness passed through his eyes. “In the state I’m in, I’m afraid I can’t be of much help anymore.”Â
Kayla’s chest tightened, as if a weight had been dropped on it, stealing her breath. “Mr. Carter… is your leg really beyond saving?”Â
She could not bear the thought of Max, once so full of vigor, being trapped in this condition for the rest of his life.Â
In her previous life, she had been framed by Marianna and Davon and lost a leg in a fire. She knew too well what it meant to live with that kind of injury.Â
Back then, how Kayla wished someone had been there to help her. But there was no one. That was why she wanted to be the one to pull someone else out of despair.Â
