When Hailey heard this, her eyes lit up with a flash of joy, though she quickly covered it with a dismissive snort. “My business doesn’t need you managing it!”Â
She turned to leave with her crew, all attitude and pride. But after just a few steps, Hailey suddenly spun around. Her expression was complicated as she pressed her lips together, then called out, “Kayla!”Â
Kayla had been about to walk away, too, but she turned at the sound of her name. What she heard next made her do a double–take–Hailey awkwardly but quickly spat out the words. “I’m sorry!”Â
The moment the words left her mouth, Hailey waved frantically at her friends behind her. “Come on, let’s go. This is embarrassing as hell.”Â
Tania watched Hailey walking away, then glanced back at Kayla. After hesitating for a moment, she finally voiced what was on her mind. “Kay, I can’t shake the feeling that you’re up to something here.”Â
She knew perfectly well that Hailey absolutely despised Marianna and Davon.Â
Yeah, Kayla was talking like she wanted Hailey to calm down, but honestly, it felt like Kayla was just itching for drama.Â
A slight smile tugged at Kayla’s lips as she reached over and patted Tania’s shoulder. “Be more confident about it–drop the ‘I can’t shake the feeling‘ part.”Â
She was totally looking for drama.Â
Actually, what she really wanted was to take Davon and Marianna down, no matter what.Â
She already had a deep grudge against Marianna and Davon.Â
Initially, she’d held back out of consideration for Tristian and Jackson, not wanting to make her move against them so early.Â
But Marianna and Davon dared to frame her again and again. Now that they’d fallen into her hands this time, she couldn’t possibly let them off so easily.Â
So when Kayla made it so simple for Hailey to get out of the police station and go after Davon and Marianna, that was part of her plan, too.Â
Tania’s expression stiffened slightly as she tested the waters. “But what if Hailey actually listens to you and doesn’t go after Marianna and Davon?”Â
Kayla’s lips curved into an ambiguous smile. “Do you really think someone with Hailey’s personality would be that obedient?”Â
Tania fell silent. ‘Why does it feel like Kayla’s insulting someone?‘ she thought.Â
She smiled, “Kay, I’m suddenly realizing you’re kind of scheming! What a sneaky girl.”Â

Kayla nodded, her fingers gently lifting Tania’s chin as she smiled. “That’s right. I’m exactly that scheming Are you scared?Â
Before Tania could answer, a voice suddenly rang out beside them.Â
Peyton said, “That’s not being scheming–that’s being brilliantly perceptive and understanding people’s hearts! Besides, you only use these tactics against enemies. You’ve never played mind games with friends, so why would she be afraid?”Â
Kayla and Tania turned to look, meeting Payton’s bright, smiling gaze head–on.Â
Kayla raised an eyebrow. Seriously, why does this guy show up everywhere?‘ she thought.Â
Tania found Payton’s words totally reasonable and nodded enthusiastically like a bobblehead. “Payton’s right. We’re friends—what do I have to be scared of? If anyone should be worried, it’s those people playing mind games with us.”Â
‘Kayla’s always been so good to me, and she’s saying this right to my face because she considers me one of her own. Why would I be afraid?‘ Tania reasoned to herself.Â
Besides, if Kayla really wanted to hurt me, she could do it with a snap of her fingers. She wouldn’t need to play any games.’Â
After she finished speaking, all three of them shared a laugh.Â
The moment stretched on as they looked at each other, nobody making the first move. The atmosphere instantly turned awkward and cold.Â
Tania glanced between Kayla and Payton, suddenly feeling like a third wheel. ‘I’m totally in the way here, she thought.Â
She checked the time and quickly said, “I need to get to my part–time job. I’m heading out now. Payton, why don’t you walk Kay home? She doesn’t have a driver picking her up these days, so it’s not safe for her to go alone.Â
Without waiting for either Kayla or Payton to respond, she bolted like someone was chasing her.Â
“Why bother walking me home? I’m not some toddler,” Kayla muttered, rolling her eyes.Â
