Marianna lowered her gaze, but a hint of smugness tugged at her lips. Still, she kept up the fragile act and cooed, “Day, she’s the Sexton family’s heiress. She’s used to getting whatever she wants.
“It’s my fault for overstepping, trying to stand up for you. I shouldn’t have upset her. Don’t blame her because of me. I hate to ruin your lifelong friendship.”
Davon’s heart softened even more, and his glare toward Kayla grew colder. “Kay, you heard that. Maria is still defending you even after all this. Apologize to her, and I won’t hold it against you that you left me in the rain.”
Kayla let out a chuckle, full of disbelief. “Davon, are you out of your mind? What exactly do I need your forgiveness for? And how much do you think it’s worth? You think I care?”
Davon’s face turned gloomy. “Kayla, don’t push it. If you keep acting out, don’t expect me to forgive you.”
Back in her past life, Kayla had thought Davon was clever, probably because she’d been drunk on her feelings. Now, with clear eyes, she realized just how dense he really was.
She scoffed inwardly, ‘He’s a walking joke, a beast in a suit. Of course he doesn’t understand what others say.’
Not interested in wasting time with them, Kayla turned to walk away, but Davon grabbed her wrist and yanked her back.
“Kayla, apologize to Maria,” Davon demanded, lowering his voice into that commanding tone he always used.
His grip was tight, and it pulled Kayla’s injured shoulder. Pain shot through her like a blade, and she sucked in a sharp breath.
“Let go,” she said coldly.
But Davon didn’t hear the warning in her voice. He insisted, “Kayla, stop acting out, or—”
Before he could finish, Kayla slapped him–clean, fast, and fierce.
Davon stood there, completely stunned, unable to process what had just happened. He hadn’t seen the slap coming, and definitely not twice in two days.
The crowd around them went still for a beat, then the whispers started rolling in.
One whispered, “Wow, Kayla just slapped Davon? Wasn’t she obsessed with him? They just fell out because of Marianna?”
Another person echoed, “Yeah, the loyal simp stopped acting so meek? Or is Kayla playing hard to get?”
Another girl widened her eyes. “Oh my. Is Kayla finally fed up with Davon and decides to dump him?”
Someone else shook their head, “You really think she’s done with him? She used to follow him around like a shadow.”

A girl smiled, “She’s probably just pissed he’s all over Marianna now. Bet Kayla is throwing a tantrum”
Someone nodded. “I guess so. Davon did her dirty in front of everyone. Kay’s is the Sexton heiress, after all.”
Another voice rang out. “If Kayla keeps this up, Davon’s gonna cut her off. She’ll be back kissing Davon’s shoes in no time.”
Kayla listened to it all with a blank face, thinking, ‘No wonder everyone thinks I’m some lovesick fool. I made it easy for them to believe that.
‘But this time, they are dead wrong. I didn’t slap Davon because I’m jealous or trying to prove something. I hit him because he asked for it.
Davon finally snapped out of it, staring at Kayla like she’d lost her mind. “Kayla, how dare you?”
Davon felt the burning sting on his cheek as the whispers around him grew louder. Embarrassment surged through him like wildfire, and rage followed right behind it.
Kayla dusted off her hands with a look of pure disgust, shrugged, and said flatly, “A smart dog doesn’t get in the way. I told you to let go, but you just had to push it. Since you begged for a slap, I could only do you a favor.”
‘Should’ve hit him harder. At least hard enough to shut him up, Kayla thought to herself.
Davon’s face flushed crimson, and he barked, “Did you just call me a dog? Kayla, you’ve crossed the line. I know you’re playing hard to get, but don’t push it too far. Don’t expect me to save your pride when this backfires.”
Kayla let out a sneer. “Playing hard to get? Seriously, are you okay in the head? You think I’d waste that kind of effort on you?”
She paused, then suddenly took out her phone and tapped the screen to wake it. “Oh, right, I almost forgot this. Didn’t you say yesterday you’d pay back that 1.5 million dollars today? So what’s it gonna be–wire transfer or Venmo?”
She held the QR code up to his face as she spoke.
Davon’s jaw twitched. He was annoyed and flustered all at once.
Last night, he’d planned to get a ride back with Kayla, thinking he’d smooth things over on the way. He hadn’t expected her to slap him in front of everyone and out his secret about being an illegitimate child. That had pissed him off.
Still, he figured a little sweet talk in the car would fix it. After all, Kayla would always come back whenever he gave her the tiniest bit of attention.
He was sure he could talk her into deleting those payment records and pretending the debt never existed.
However, Kayla didn’t even let him get into the car. He walked home in the rain, caught a fever, and by now, he’d completely forgotten about the whole debt.

Now, Kayla forced him to pay back right in front of everyone. Davon felt nothing but immense humiliation.
Kayla, of course, had no intention of letting him off the hook. She widened her eyes in mock surprise and said, “Wait, don’t tell me you’re trying to deny it?
“Looks like I’ll have to post all our payment receipts on the school forum. Let the teachers and students help me sort it out.”
Davon clenched his fists at his sides, his jaw tight with frustration. “Kayla, don’t go too far. You don’t even need the money, and you know-”
He finished the rest of his words in his mind. “You know I don’t have enough money, and you still bring it out to humiliate me in public.”
Kayla clearly knew what Davon tried to say, yet she kept her face calm and said with a faint smile, “Sure, I’m not hurting for money, but I won’t give it away for nothing.
“That’s 1.5 million dollars. Maybe it’s pocket change to you, but to me, it’s still a lot of money.”
She looked around and raised her voice. “Am I right, everyone?”
The crowd, already enjoying the drama, nodded. Someone immediately chimed in, “Yeah, who’d be dumb enough to give 1.5 million just to anyone?”
Kayla scoffed inwardly, ‘Yeah. I was so dumb once. In my last life, I gave Davon way more than 1.5 million and never saw a penny back. All I got in return was betrayal and manipulation.‘
She lowered her gaze for a moment, hiding the sudden sting in her eyes. When she looked up again, her expression was colder, and her stare locked on Davon was like a blade pressed to his pride.
Pressed by everyone’s judgment and humiliated beyond reason, Davon finally caved. His face flushed with shame, and his voice came out tight. “Fine. Just 1.5 million, right? I never said I’d deny it.”
He pulled out his phone and sent the transfer right then and there.
