The thought that Payton had helped her in her darkest moments twice in two lifetimes made Kayla’s chest feel heavy.
She thought, I don’t believe that’s the real him. If he were as terrible as the rumors say, why would he help me?
Even when I said those harsh words to him that day, he was only angry, and he didn’t do anything to hurt me.
If Payton were truly bad, he could’ve easily taken advantage of helping me to extort money from me.
Kayla’s long eyelashes fluttered slightly, hiding the worry in her eyes, but she couldn’t help but ask, “But he’s been missing for days. Hasn’t the teacher gone to his house to check on him? What if something happened to him?”
Tania let out a laugh, her tone laced with sarcasm. “Dear Kay, you know how snobbish our homeroom teacher is.
“If you, the Sexton family’s young lady, skipped class, Ravenna would call your house eight hundred times a day to check on you, and even bring some gifts to visit you.
“But for people from ordinary families like Payton and me? Ravenna probably wishes we’d never show up at all. Don’t you know why she bothered asking? She was just in a bad mood and took it out on Payton.”
Tania’s explanation made Kayla’s lips twitch in helplessness. Even though she knew Tania was telling the truth, it still left an unpleasant knot in her heart.
She forced an awkward smile, set aside her thoughts about Payton for the moment, and tried to focus on the lesson. But during the break, she secretly sent a message, waiting anxiously for a reply.
After class, Kayla pulled a thick stack of cash prepared in advance from her fancy bag and handed it to Tania. “Tania, go buy me a chocolate from the supermarket. As usual, the extra is your errand fee.”
The moment she heard this, Tania’s eyes sparkled right away, as if she’d found a treasure. She took the money happily and replied in a crisp voice, “Got it, my lady. Wait for me, I’ll be right back!”
Then, she turned to run toward the supermarket with a beaming face, and Marianna just happened to witness that.
Marianna strode over to them, staring at Kayla indignantly. Her voice was so sharp it cut through the quiet classroom. “Kayla, that’s going too far! How could you humiliate Tania like this?”
Kayla and Tania were both stunned by the sudden accusation. The students nearby cast curious glances over, murmuring among themselves.
Kayla grimaced and rubbed her ears, which stung from the shrillness. The smile on her face vanished instantly, replaced by an impatient sneer. “Marianna, stop picking fights!”
Marianna acted as if she’d caught Kayla red–handed, immediately putting on a self–righteous air and raising her voice to accuse, “Kayla, everyone knows the Sexton family is powerful, but being rich gives you no right to humiliate your
classmates!
“Tania’s your deskmate, not your servant. You two are supposed to be friends, but how can you insult her using your money?”
Kayla narrowed her eyes, feeling annoyed just looking at Marianna. She rolled her eyes secretly, thinking Marianna must
have lost her mind.

She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down, then stared at Marianna coldly, “Marianna, are you fucking out of your mind? Why do you have to butt in everywhere?
“Tania’s my deskmate. Why would I insult her? What’s your problem? Do you just love sticking your nose into other people’s business? Mind your own business!”
Kayla realized that since being reborn, she’d grown increasingly unashamed of speaking her mind, and even her language had turned more vulgar. But somehow, talking like this felt so thrilling!
