Through the door, Kayla listened, and she even seemed to feel the heartbreak and despair in Payton’s voice.
After a long while, Payton took a deep breath. He picked up the medical bill slip from the bedside, then walked slowly to the window, his brows furrowed tight.
His finger swiped gently across his phone screen, as if searching for something, and his expression grew more and more
grave.
After hesitating for what felt like an eternity, Payton finally mustered the courage to dial a number–one he’d clearly been unwilling to call, even as a last resort.
From the other end of the line, a low, frigid voice filtered through, carrying a subtle note of knowing anticipation, “You finally called.”
It sounded as if it had been waiting for this moment.
“Why haven’t you paid the medical bills yet? You owe this to my mom. You have to take responsibility.” Payton’s tone was sharp with anger, but his voice trembled slightly, betraying the tension and unease swirling inside him.
The person on the other end sneered, “I told you. Agree to my terms, and I’ll settle the medical fees right away.”
Payton’s fists clenched so tight his nails dug into his palms. He ground his teeth and said, “No way. Who do you think you are, bargaining with me? You owe us this! I’m not leaving my mom. Give up on that!”
The person on the other end didn’t seem rushed, nor did he care about Payton’s anger. There was a hint of mockery in his tone as he threatened coldly, “You’d better think this over again.
“Refuse, and I won’t pay a single penny for your mom’s treatment. Whether she lives or dies, it’s all up to you.”
As if he knew he held Payton’s fate in his hands, the man added proudly, “Make up your mind fast. Your mom’s condition doesn’t allow her to wait forever.”
Payton’s face turned instantly livid. His eyes blazed with angry flames, glowing a terrifying scarlet.
He hung up the call furiously, slamming his phone down on the bed. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath, and his chest heaved violently as he tried to suppress the raging anger and overwhelming powerlessness in his chest.
When he opened his eyes again, the cold, sharp light that had once flickered in them was gone, replaced by dullness and emptiness.
It was as if his soul had been swallowed by endless darkness and despair, and Kayla could feel his heartbreaking fragility and helplessness.
She stared, aghast. She didn’t know who Payton had been talking to, but whoever it was had reduced Payton, who was usually so calm and composed, as if untouched by emotion, to such a state of fury and agitation.
The indifference and calmness people whispered about Payton were long shattered by the cruelty of reality, replaced by endless sorrow and despair.
“What are you doing here?” A soft voice suddenly sounded behind Kayla, startling her. She turned around quickly,
Standing there was a doctor in a doctor’s overall. He asked softly, “Which ward are you here for?”
Kayla felt like a thief, terrified of being noticed by Payton. She quickly stepped away from the door and mumbled

awkwardly, “I… I got the wrong ward.”
Before the doctor could react, she tiptoed toward another room.

The doctor only frowned in confusion, not thinking further. Slowly, he opened the ward door and walked in. He glanced at the phone on the bed, then at Payton, and his eyes softened with sympathy and helplessness.
Then, he spoke in a low and solemn tone, “Your mother’s medical bills have been overdue for a while. Her life isn’t in immediate danger now. However, without receiving the payment, we can’t make any guarantees about continuing her
treatment.”
