Chapter 78
Before Davon could respond, she slipped out her phone, pulled up her banking app, and thrust the screen right under his nose, nearly poking him in the face. “Here. A transfer works just fine. No need to make it complicated.”
She had been too busy to chase him down before, but now that he’d walked straight into her path, she wasn’t about to waste the chance.
Davon froze, his jaw tightening. Around them, a few students snickered, clearly enjoying the show. Their amused stares only made him bristle.
“Forget the money. That’s nothing,” he snapped. “I’m talking about the posts online. Don’t try to dodge the question.”
Kayla gave a short laugh, wagging a finger in his direction. “Wrong. To me, the money is the only thing that matters. If you don’t plan to pay up, then get lost.”
She started to walk past him, but halfway through, she stopped, as if something had just occurred to her.
Turning back, a sly smile playing on her lips, she said, “Oh, and I nearly forgot. It’s been ages since you promised to pay me back. I’ll post the record of your debt on the school forum later. Once you’re the star of campus gossip, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Her tone was light, but the color drained from Davon’s face, turning it dark and stormy.
Her tone was light, but the color drained from Davon’s face, turning it dark and stormy. He hated how easily she could corner him like this.
“It’s not like I can’t pay,” he muttered hastily. “I just didn’t bring it today. Don’t push your luck.”
Inside, his thoughts twisted. ‘Why is she so serious about the money all of a sudden? Is this just her excuse, some smokescreen to cover up her pregnancy?‘
The idea made him bold. He leaned in close, voice dropping to a menacing whisper at her ear. “That baby you’re carrying? No one even knows whose it is. If you let the money slide, maybe I’ll be generous enough to keep my mouth shut.”
He didn’t know where she’d been or who she’d been with, but if he could use it to hold something over her, so much the better. He could stay quiet for now and explain things later when it suited him.
Kayla’s eyes gleamed with a cold laugh. Of course Davon would stoop to this.
He’d grown up with her all these years, and still he thought so little of her, as if she were nothing but careless and cheap. He really didn’t know her at all.
She shoved him back and drew a tissue from her pocket. With deliberate care, she wiped her earlobe clean, as though even the trace of his breath was something filthy.
“If it’s really that hard for you, I won’t force you,” she said coolly. “But you’d better start with paying me back.”
She had already called the police, Soon, the truth would be out. He wouldn’t have the chance to use this as leverage again.
Her look of contempt and her icy tone made his brow knot in fury. “You…”
He couldn’t believe it. He’d made what he thought was such a huge concession, and she still dared to defy him.
Before he could get another word out, a shrill voice cut through the tension. “Kayla! You destroyed Mr. Ortiz, and now you’ve got the nerve to demand money from him? You really have no shame.”

Kayla turned toward the interruption. A girl was glaring daggers at her, clinging tightly to Marianna’s arm in a show of loyalty. The closeness between them was obvious.
Kayla recognized her instantly. It was Hailey Mitchell, Marianna’s little lapdog.
In her last life, Hailey had done Marianna’s dirty work more times than she could count.
And now, before Marianna had even said a word, Hailey had already jumped in for her.
