Elijah clearly thought she was just making excuses. He let out a sneer, the anger in his eyes only burning hotter. “Of course you’d defend her. You’re saying it wasn’t your mom? Where’s the proof?”
With Max’s words behind her, Kayla suddenly had the courage to stand firm. She straightened her back and spoke with conviction. “I know you still don’t believe my mom is innocent, but think about it. Why would anyone wear a hat late at night?”
She pondered, ‘There’s no sun. What’s the point of a hat? If she really wanted to hide, wearing a mask would’ve made more sense. Covering half her face and leaving the other half showing? That’s suspicious.
Kayla fixed her gaze on Max, her words sharp and steady as she said, “And if someone had already paid others to deal with you, why would she suddenly appear in front of you, letting you see her and handing you evidence against her?
“Most importantly, if the real intent was to kill you, why leave you alive at all? Why stop halfway instead of making sure you never woke up?”
Kayla’s voice carried a cold edge of mockery, as if she had already seen through the scheme.
Putting herself in that position, she knew one thing for certain–if she ever moved against someone in secret, she would never allow them to notice, and she would never leave them breathing.
Elijah shot to his feet, his eyes bloodshot with fury. He roared, “What are you getting at, huh? How could you be so vicious? I should tear that mouth of yours apart!”
Inwardly, he seethed, ‘She looks so sweet and gentle, but how can she think in such ruthless ways? I really did misjudge her before.
Elijah grew more furious the longer he thought about it. He raised his hand, ready to lash out at Kayla, but Max stopped him with a sharp gesture.
Frustrated, Elijah glared at his father, his voice filled with reproach. “Dad, you can’t be letting her talk you around that easily. can you?”
Then, he swung his glare back at Kayla. “What if your mom assumed both my parents were already… already gone, and didn’t bother to double–check? Maybe that’s why my dad managed to survive.”
After all, his mother had died on the spot. It wasn’t impossible that Kayla’s mother had let her guard down.
But Kayla only sneered, “If someone truly meant to kill, would they make such a rookie mistake? Would you?”
Elijah opened his mouth to argue, but nothing came.
Payton, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up. “She’s right. If someone really wanted a person dead, they would make sure. They’d even destroy the body if necessary. They wouldn’t leave a loose end like that, handing their enemy the chance for revenge.”
As soon as he finished, he realized what he had just said. He glanced at Kayla nervously and quickly explained, “Don’t get me wrong. I’m just reasoning it out, that’s all. I’d never kill anyone. It’s just deduction… only deduction.”
Kayla showed no fear at his words. Instead, admiration lit up her eyes. “Exactly. If you go that far, you make sure the job is complete. No risks left behind.”
Both Max and Elijah frowned deeper at that, their expressions so alike it was almost uncanny. They looked troubled, as though working through something.

Chapter 99
Seeing Max waver, Kayla pressed on, saying. “Mr. Carter, don’t you think all of this feels staged? As if someone wanted you to ser my mom and wanted you to believe she was the one behind that tragedy?
Think about it. A man who lost the love of his life, who barely escaped death himself, suddenly learns the true face of the killer. What would someone in his place usually do?”
Kayla’s voice carried a quiet suggestion, tugging their thoughts toward the same place. The room fell into heavy silence. The air seemed to thicken, weighed down until even breathing felt deliberate and restrained.
