Yunice’s trembling hand rose, and Wyatt covered it with his own, stroking gently to calm her.
Her eyes burned red. “Leave me here and go for help. Otherwise neither of us will make it.”
Wyatt tried to lift her again. “No.”
She grabbed his collar, forcing his gaze to hers. “Wyatt, think clearly! If I could walk on my own, I’d never ask you to leave me!”
But carrying her meant he bled more, drained more strength.
Wyatt only tightened his hold, stubbornly descending the stairs. “I will never leave again. Six years ago, I failed you. Not this time.”
“Wyatt!” a voice echoed from above–Jordan.
His steps pounded closer.
Relief lit Yunice’s face. “Jordan! We’re here! Nineteenth floor stairwell!”

She turned hopefully toward Wyatt–only to realize he wasn’t reacting. He just kept moving, step after step, as if sheer willpower were pulling his body along.
“Wyatt! Madam!” Jordan rounded the corner, froze at the sight of them, then rushed down.
Yunice’s voice broke with relief.
Jordan snapped back into motion. “The ambulance is downstairs! Wyatt, give Madam to me. I’ll carry her!”
But Wyatt wouldn’t let go.
“Wyatt! Look at me!” Jordan barked. “It’s Jordan. I’m here to help. If you don’t hand her over, she’ll suffer for it!”
At last, Wyatt’s pupils shifted, as if he’d only just recognized him.
Jordan reached for Yunice again, and this time Wyatt released her.
Jordan hoisted her onto his back and dashed down the stairs.
“I’ll get you to the ambulance first, then come back for Wyatt. Don’t worry–we’ve seen worse.

He kept up a steady stream of chatter to stop Yunice from drifting into unconsciousness.
She whispered faintly, “I’m pregnant…”
“Jordan, tell Joe–save my baby.”
Jordan stumbled for a moment, then nodded hard. “I promise. I’ll remember.”
When Yunice was carried out, the medics swarmed her immediately.
At the hospital, two gurneys rushed down opposite hallways, passing each other for the briefest instant before vanishing into different wings.
Yunice, still conscious, caught a fleeting glimpse of Wyatt as she was wheeled into surgery.
The surgical lights flared above her.
“Joe,” she called weakly.
“Madam?” Joe appeared in her line of sight, already in scrubs. He was ready to fight for her and the child.
“Joe, how’s Wyatt?”
“Don’t worry,” Joe said, brisk but steady. “We’re fully equipped. Even if he’s at death’s door, we’ll pull him back. And with his daughter waiting, he won’t dare give up. Focus on yourself— we’ll save the baby together.”
Yunice exhaled, then rallied her strength. “Then let me write some prescriptions.”
“Go ahead,” Joe said, working quickly as he listened. “Mr. Carl and Laurie are outside. The hall is packed–everyone’s worried about you.”
For once, Yunice felt like a daughter others truly cared about.
Outside the operating rooms, the families paced restlessly.
“How could she be pregnant now?”

“Didn’t she know herself?”
“She’s a doctor. Of course she knew.”
Laurie suddenly remembered the pills she’d once seen in Yunice’s bag. At the time she’d been puzzled. Now she realized–they had been anti–nausea medication.
Yunice had known. She had hidden it.
“She wanted to have the baby in secret. Raise it on her own.”
“But why? Did she think Wyatt wouldn’t care for his own child?”
“Yunice has no sense of security. She’s afraid someone will take it from her.”
Freya crossed her arms. “Let’s see who dares touch my niece or nephew. They’re ours to protect.”
Jordan clicked his tongue. “Hold it. That child is half Cooper blood. We have every right to be involved, don’t we?”
“Nonsense. Yunice is the one giving birth–what’s it got to do with you?”
“Be reasonable. Nobody pops out of a rock. The birth certificate will have Wyatt’s name, won’t it? How can you say we don’t count?”
“The baby isn’t even born yet and you’re already fighting. No wonder Yunice wanted to keep it
secret.”
Jordan: “…”
