The café hums with low chatter and the faint hiss of milk steaming behind the counter.the air smells like roasted beans and caramel syrup warm and grounding the kind of smell that usually calms me.not today. 

Kiera waves me over to our usual corner table the one by the window where the sunlight slants across her hair and makes her look like she’s glowing. 

she is already halfway through an iced latte and scrolling through her phone with the kind of focus people usually reserve for surgery.

you look like you have been run over by a bus,” she says the second i sit down. 

good morning to you too,” i mutter sinking into the chair.my coffee arrives just as i do thick foam trembling at the rim.i wrap my hands around the cup and let the warmth bleed into my palms. 

she eyes me over her straw. “It’s been what, a few days since the whole ‘kissing your fake boyfriend‘ spectacle? You need to detox from drama.” 

I groan. “Can we not call it a spectacle?” 

“Oh, it was absolutely a spectacle. The internet practically had a meltdown. Half the comments think you two are secretly married already.”

Kiera leans forward her eyes bright with mischief. ” which is why you need to get out there again. Reset your system. Preferably with someone who doesn’t live off chaos.” 

I glance up.” youre kidding.” 

“I’m not. You’ve been in PR hell and heartbreak limbo for months.its time to date again.” 

“im not sure i remember how.” 

she grins and i know that look its the same one she gets before saying something i wont like. ” lucky for you i already have someone in mind.”

“My boss, Liam.“she says it like its nothing like she didnt just toss a grenade onto the table. ” he has been wanting to meet you for ages.” 

I blink. “Your boss?” 

“Mhm.dont look at me like that.he is funny smart,good at his job and wait for it emotionally available. I checked.” 

i cant help it.i laugh shaking my head. ” you vetted him for me?” 

“Someone has to. After Dylan and your current… whatever Aiden is, I’m taking control.”

her tone sharpens as she sets her drink down. ” honestly I still cant believe Dylan kissed another girl on the kiss cam. Who does that?” 

the memory hits like a flash bright lights a stadium full of people Dylan’s lips on someone else’s.my chest tightens but i try to play it off. 

Kiera doesn’t let me. “And then to break up over the phone? Coward move. Didn’t even have the decency to face you. And don’t get me started on how he used your money to buy that woman gifts” 

i let out a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. “you have been holding that in for a while huh?” 

“Oh, please. i have been waiting for the day i could call him a spineless low life with the emotional range of a teaspoon.” 

i nearly choke on my coffeenlaughter spilling out before i can stop it.it feels good light and unexpected. 

for a second i forget the noise in my head.the fake smiles the headlines the tension that clings to every memory of Aiden’s office.i forget the hollow ache that’s been following me around like a shadow. 

“See?” Kiera says, triumphant. ” thats the sound of healing.” 

i roll my eyes but shes right.laughing feels like breathing again. 

she leans back in her chair swirling the ice in her cup. “liam’s been asking about you for weeks by the way. I might’ve mentioned your name once or twice… or ten times.” 

I groan. “Kiera.” 

She grins, unapologetic. “What? He’s heard all about you.i might have mentioned you once or twice at work,” she says stirring her drink with the straw. ” he said you sound like someone who actually feels things which is rare these days.”
