194 A glimpse Of The UnderworldÂ
We walked through the entrance and took an elevator to get to the top. The doors opened to a broad room with dim lighting; the setting was classy and intimate, reminding me of a speakeasy.Â
A few individuals were engaged in muted conversation, and others were having drinksÂ
at the bar.Â
This doesn’t look like an Underworld.Â
However, the more I looked, the more I noticed men at every corner. I bet they had guns. This wasn’t so normal after all.Â
“Nervous?” Noah asked in my ear, drawing me close, until my body was practically glued to his.Â
I didn’t reply, choosing silence for my sanity because God knows I’m this close to punching him in the face.Â
We neared a woman at an entrance, dressed stylishly in her evening gown, with a few men standing beside her in guard.Â
“Noah Voss…” he introduced, and she stuck out her hand for him.Â
Noah obliged, kissing her knuckles, lingering more than usual, and Deja vu gripped me like waves.Â
Like father, like son.Â
The woman seemed to enjoy his disgusting move, giving him a sly grin.Â
“We were expecting you,” she spoke in a slow, sensual voice before veering her gaze toÂ
- me.Â
Hey, bitch. You can have him.Â
“It was a single invitation…” she said in a disapproving tone. “She stays here with the other lot.”Â
“Unfortunately, sweetheart…” Noah gave way so that his men, who were holding onto a duffel bag, could be seen. “We’re here for some fun, and it would be a shame if you don’t allow us to do that. Little loss can’t be tolerated, right?”Â

The woman looked interested now, and she nodded, taking off the stanchion rope and leading us through.Â
It was a long walk through the hallway, and I pondered where she was taking us now. Not until we got to a spot where a password was punched on the wall, and the doors slid open to reveal an elevator.Â
Okay… this is getting far too nerve–racking. Is that the portal to hell?Â
“After you…”Â
Noah kissed her cheek, and we walked in, the doors shutting.Â
We’re going down. Maybe it’s really a portal to hell.Â
After thirty seconds of torture, the doors opened with a ding, and an entirely different location came into view, smelling thickly of smoke and something else I couldn’tÂ
describe.Â
“Welcome to the underworld,” Noah murmured to my ear. “A part of it.”Â
It was a metaphor.Â
This was a casino, and it was bigger and longer than the speakeasy, as if this was the main building, and the rest of the building was just for show.Â
It truly was, and even though this wasn’t the best situation to be in awe, I couldn’t help it. This place was fucking amazing!Â
As we strolled through, I eyed every game, some I know, many I don’t, and the people who played these games weren’t like the typical ones you see at a gambling spot.Â
They were all dressed in suits and nice dresses, all looking rich in some way or another as they made their bets, and celebrated victory.Â
The place was well put together, like some grand royal event was ongoing.Â
I thought we were gonna stop at one of the tables, but we didn’t. We walked as if we had a destination to make.Â
“See that man over there?” Noah whispered to me, and I eyed the center, where a long table was, and poker was played.Â
The man stood out from the rest of the crowd, and he had a mustache. Two hefty men in shirts too tight for their muscles, holding onto big rifles, stood behind.Â
194 A glimpse Of The UnderworldÂ
“That’s James Shaw. He owes the biggest casino in the underworld and everyone you see here…” His eyes swept the place, and I did too. “Aren’t the typical wealthy. James has a magnet for bringing people together; this place has been on for years, and no one has ever infiltrated it. He’s that powerful.”Â
“We’re walking towards him,” I said.Â
“Yes, we are. Do you know something else interesting?”Â
I glanced at him, and he grinned broadly.Â
“He and Ares King are like oil and water. The kind that have gone to war many times, I’m sure you know about underground wars.”Â
When he caught my confused expression, he scoffed.Â
“Does your husband just keep you like a fucking pretty doll in his house? You’re his wife, and by blood and oath you should stand by his side.” His eyes raked me. “If I were your husband, I wouldn’t keep you trapped in a bubble.”Â
I peeled my eyes away from him, a feeling settling low in my stomach.Â
“I don’t want any part of this world.”Â
“You mean his world,” he corrected me. “That shouldn’t be your choice to make. A made man is in control. Wives are beneath them, but also a needed factor.”Â
I leaned away when he got too close.Â
“Listen, you’d better be convincing. One wrong move and there will be hell to pay.”Â
When we neared, the bodyguards around blocked us.Â
“Tell James Shaw I bring an offer he can’t refuse.”Â
The guard snorted.Â
“Ares King.”Â
His smug expression instantly faded.Â
“Let them through.”Â
A voice came behind, and he stepped away to reveal James.Â
“Would youÂ
look at that… It’s Noah fucking Voss. The entire city is torn apart because of you; you got on Ares King’s blacklist.”Â

James took the round brown cigar from his lip and held it between his fingers. “I was shocked when I saw your request to come here.”Â
“I had a good reason for that.”Â
“Is that so?” James moved his eyes to me. “And who is this?“–Â
“She’s my woman.”Â
James chuckled. “I think you can be more convincing than that…”Â
“Am I not?”Â
James paused for a moment before looking back and forth between us. “I’ve got better chemistry with a stripper. She looks mortified.”Â
I was nervous because this man’s eyes were cold–blooded, the kind when you staredÂ
know. you right at a killer, andÂ
However, that all soon changed when Noah grabbed me by my hair and smashed his lips against mine.Â

I tried to fight him off, but his tongue shoved into my mouth and disgustingly made it a mouthwatering kiss. The next minute, he was off me, breathing heavily and licking his lips, eyeing me like he wanted to have another taste.Â
I can’t even scream at him for putting his mouth on me. But I did something better.Â
Slap!Â
“I told you I don’t like it when you do that in public. You never listen, do you?”Â
Noah faced me back, pissed, but I looked over to James and put on my best act to avoidÂ
his wrath.Â
I tilted my hips and placed my hand against it. “So… you’re the famous James Shaw, my sweetheart has told me all about you. You’re quite famous and powerful.”Â
A slow smirk took over James‘ lips. “May I have the honor of knowing your name?”Â
I pulled out the chair. James‘ eyes were glued to my breasts as I pressed my ass into the seat and crossed my legs.Â
“Diamond.”Â
“Diamond…” James tasted the name on his lips. “And how long have you been with this…” He spared a look at Noah. “…wreck. Someone of your caliber doesn’t match that.”Â
“All the more reason why I’m with him. He’s perfect for me.”Â
Ugh! I wanna vomit!Â
Noah cleared his throat and sat down. “See? That’s the reason I don’t bring her out aÂ
lot.”Â
“Please, Mr. Voss… I suggest you don’t ever do that again. This Diamond shouldn’t be hidden but allowed to shine bright.” He stuck his hand out.Â
I eyed it before I gave him my hand, and he pressed his lips against it.Â
“You taste delicious,” he said, reclining, still holding onto it. “I can’t believe Noah has had you all to himself all this time.”Â
“Which is why I told him to let me get out more. He doesn’t appreciate these goods.”Â

“Indeed…” he replied, amused, stroking my palm.Â
Please stop!Â
“Allow me to make you an offer.”Â
I tilted my head in question.Â
“Became mine, and I can give you the life of a queen.”Â
I smirked nervously and successfully peeled my hand away.Â
“How about that, Diamond?”Â
“I’m still here…” Noah said in irritation. “You are hitting on my woman, and that is disrespectful.”Â
“If you wanted respect, then you should have gone somewhere else.”Â
I snorted, and their eyes snapped to me. Oops! Sorry, not sorry.Â
“I told you, sweetheart, we should have brought our A–game.”Â
“She speaks sense…” James commented, winking at me before shifting his attention to Noah. “You were never sloppy. What happened to you?”Â
“Ares King…” he replied with malice in his tone.Â
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.Â
“He took everything, and he’s only gonna take more.”Â

“You opposed him…” James said, taking the cards off the table and shuffling.Â
“Only because he took my father’s tongue…” Noah frowned. “For a woman.”Â
“Ah….” James mumbled. “The famous Mrs. King. She’s been the talk in the underworld.”Â
I have?Â
“There are rumors that she’s just a lover to get his cock wet.”Â
Ouch.Â
“But I know Ares King. He has never gone public with a woman before…” he pointed to Noah. “She means something.”Â
I leveled my gaze as a feeling swarmed me. I–I do?Â
“I think she does too…” Noah agreed, smirking. “What if I told you I have her?”Â
195 Diamond In DistressÂ
My stomach dropped.Â
James’s shuffle instantly halted, pinning Noah with an even colder look. “You lie…”Â
“But I caught your attention. Which means you believed me there…” Noah snapped his finger, and his men brought the duffel bag and dropped it on the table.Â
James scoffed scornfully. “And what is this…?”Â
“Money…”Â
“Look around you, Voss, do I look like I need a bag of money?”Â
“But I know you’re a man who wants every dime. Yours and not…”Â
James eyed the money and then looked back at Noah, reclining in his seat. “Go on.”Â
“There’s more where this came from… I want you to cut Ares King. You have the network to do that, and I have the gadgets, as you’re aware, I’m the new owner of Mercer systems. When we hit him, we do it hard. Harder than you’ve ever done before. You could get your name out there, and you… James Shaw could be the next Don.”Â
I tried to calm myself from shaking. Of course, I knew he was gonna do something to bring Ares down, but cut? That sounded way deeper.Â
Noah wants to start another war.Â
James laughed out loud. Even the men behind were amused.Â
“Noah Voss… when you came here, you weren’t checked for weapons, nor were you men asked to stand down.”Â
Noah blinked, wondering what he was going on about. “No?”Â
“That’s right. My casino…” He spread his arms. “Has never been at threat nor will it ever be. No one dares to come here to wreak havoc; they won’t even make it through my building. I have made far more than your father has ever seen in his lifetime, and I’ll make more and more. Nothing is ever gonna stop that, not even the devil himself.”Â
Cocky bastard. He sounded omnipotent, like a God.Â
“I don’t perceive you as a threat nor a partner, You’re beneath me.”Â
That’s gotta hurt.Â
I glanced at Noah’s way in hopes of seeing rage, but I found him smug.Â

As James went back to his shuffling, Noah gave me an all too knowing look.Â
Oh no. I should have known, from the very moment he claimed he had Mrs. King. Everything was cleared from that point on.Â
“Let’s do this then…” Noah said. “I’ll sell her to you…”Â
James raised an eyebrow. “Now you’re getting far too desperate. Selling off your woman has to be the most degrading move I have ever seen.”Â
“I’m not desperate… I’m thirsty for revenge. And she is the key we both need.”Â
James narrowed his eyes, and my life flashed before my eyes when Noah opened his mouth to expose me.Â
Suddenly, the lights flickered violently. We all looked at the chandelier simultaneously.Â
It stopped.Â
“What was that?” Noah asked, uneasy.Â
James reached for the desk phone, fingers brushing the plastic and curling around the receiver. He grew impatient as if whoever he called for wasn’t answering.Â
Gunshots rang out of nowhere, and all hell broke loose.Â
