243 The Phone CallÂ
“Take a guess…” Ares said, amused.Â
“This is not funny! I won’t be able to live with myself if anything happens to himÂ
because his blood will be on my hands. I’m not having that on my conscience, you hear me?” I pointed a finger.Â
But so suddenly he seized my wrist and yanked me close.Â
“Your mouth is getting sharper.” He leaned to whisper in my ear. “Careful, babydoll…”Â
My heart raced for all the wrong reasons, and instead of fighting him off, I just relished the feel of his body against mine.Â
However, I summoned the courage, just enough to glare right at him.Â
“You two are like Tom and Jerry.”Â
I jumped off his grip and kept a distance.Â
“Esme!”Â
Esme was sitting on the stairs, her palms pushing into her cheeks. “Mister King is Tom and Mommy’s Jerry.”Â
“Why do you think so, angel?”Â
I slapped Ares on the chest when he asked that question.Â
Esme held the railing for support and stood. “They are both chasing each other, with no progress.” She shook her head like we were a lost cause before going up the stairs.Â

Esme was in the living room, on the floor, making a colorful drawing, feet up in the air as she wagged them back and forth.Â
I approached Ares, still engaged in his work, and he didn’t seem like he would be leaving anytime soon.Â
I cleared my throat. “Esme told me about Reed…” I began.Â
He’s clearly alive by no doubt, and that gave me some relief.Â
“When are you leaving for Midnight?”Â
243 The Phone CallÂ
“Depends.”Â
“Depends on what?”Â
“Esme’s birthday is coming up soon. You have plans to be your grandparents.”Â
“How did you…” I didn’t even bother to finish that sentence.Â
Of course, he knew.Â
“Yes, that was the plan, and I still intend on doing that.”Â
Things have changed now, though, and how to stir the wheels from here was clueless to me. I’d just stick to this visit for now.Â
“My private jet is yours.”Â
“That’s not necessary and-”Â
“We’re lovers.” He pinned me with his eyes. “Things like this are normal. Sharing.”Â
Is he trying to school me right now? Coming from someone who has never been in aÂ
tionship before. At least he had ideas.Â
aven’t agreed to that yet.”Â
Ares blinked.Â
“As you said, normal. When a guy asks a girl out, she has the right to say yes or no.”Â
“Even though my fingers have been inside your pussy?”Â
“Ares!” I whispered–hissed, looking at Esme, who was overly engrossed in her drawing.Â
“Call me honey.”Â
“Wha–Wha-” His hand grasped my waist and drew me close until I was almost sitting on his lap.Â
I tensed when my hand pressed directly against his bulge. I leveled my gaze and, realizing my mistake, I shot them back to his eyes.Â
“You still won’t admit it, will you?” he murmured.Â
“Admit what?” I feigned ignorance.Â
“That you still love me.”Â
It felt like neÂ

change.”Â
“Then I just have to make you fall in love with me all over again.”Â
His phone rang, and I easily pushed him off, trying to calm myself after he just uttered such words with certainty. That devil’s ego was bigger than that cock of his.Â
A frown crossed Ares‘ expression as the call went on.Â
“Is something wrong?”Â
Ares took the phone off his ear and stood. “I have something to take care of. I’ll be backÂ
soon.”Â
Before I could say anything, he kissed me, devouring my mouth before he pulled back.Â
“When I get back, we’ll finish this conversation, and it will be the end of it.”Â
“I wouldn’t count on that because we’re not having any.”Â
The corner of his lips twitched. “Thirty.”Â
He brushed past me before I could understand what he meant. He kissed Esme on her forehead, saying something to her before leaving.Â
I tried to ignore the sinking feeling at his sudden departure, but I quickly shoved it aside to dial Harper’s number to check on her.Â
I just recalled that Maria had a sick day for close to a week now, leaving Harper alone. She was good in the kitchen, but I was worried about the workload she had to endure. This was the weekend, and even though we sometimes had a slow one, there wasÂ
sometimes a rush.Â
I waited for a long time for her to return my call, because no matter what, Harper always does, she always has her earphones on all the time.Â
So much for a day off.Â
“Sweetie, come on, we’re heading to the diner.”Â
“Why?”Â
“We need to check up on Harper. Quickly now.”Â
Esme shoved her drawing into her book and rushed to me.Â
Since we went on foot, it took a while, and the streetlights were already coming up.Â

“Don’t worry, you’ll have chocolate cake.”Â
“Yes!”Â
I giggled when we neared the diner, the sign said ‘Closed: I blinked, checking the time. It’s still too carly for that.Â
“How am I gonna get chocolate cake now?” Esme pouted.Â
“It’s okay, sweetie, let’s just go in first.”Â
When we got to the door, I realized I had left my key.Â
“Shit! I mean… oh no.”Â
Esme sighed and opened the door. “It’s open.”Â
“Oh… would you look at that…”Â
“And you owe the swear jar, one dollar.”Â
“Yeah, yeah.”Â
We walked in, but it was dark.Â
“Stay close,” I said, tapping my hand against the wall to find the switch, turning on the lights.Â
“Why did Harper close so early?”Â
I felt Esme tuck my sweater, prompting me to look where her gaze was.Â
“Maria?”Â
“Hi, boss.” A smile curled on her black painted lips.Â
“What are you doing here? I thought you weren’t feeling-” I paused when I found her rotating a knife between her fingers skillfully.Â
That doesn’t look like she took that from the kitchen.Â
“Actually, I feel so much better now,” she replied before shrugging. “I thought I stopped by.”Â
Her clothes, too, were… different almost like she had switched. She was clad in leather from head to toe, her hair in a high ponytail.Â
Something’s wrong.Â

“Where’s Harper?” I asked, trying to act like I hadn’t discerned anything. “Is she here?*Â
“She’s occupied.”Â
My blood ran cold when I spotted familiar boots, the rest hidden behind the counter.Â
“I quit, boss. I thought it was better I came to tell you myself. Can we talk alone?”Â
I crouched to Esme’s height and cupped her cheek. “Go to the kitchen. I need to speak with Maria alone.” I kissed her cheek before I whispered. “Hide. Mommy will come find you.”Â
Esme didn’t argue; she snatched my bag from me and ran through the swinging doors.Â
“Don’t worry, I won’t harm little Esme.” Maria got off the table, her heels clicking. Her fingers rotation stopped as she clutched the knife tightly.Â
“But you would harm me?” I asked, my voice hardening.Â
“No…” she murmured. “I’m gonna kill you. Quietly.”Â
