“Ahem!” I cleared my throat, and she finally moved her eyes to me.Â
“And you are?”Â
Seriously?Â
“Do you expect me to believe that you don’t know me?”Â
“Such a disrespectful tone. Do you speak to your elders that way? Can’t blame this old woman for not being familiar.”Â
Guilt tripping now?Â
I have just met her for one minute, and she’s already by far the worst King I had met so far.Â
“Nico…” I said, knowing he was behind me. “Please take Esme to the car.”Â
“As you wish, Milady.”Â
I felt her hand slip from mine, and I waited until they were inside.Â
“Apologies… I should have introduced myself if I knew it was necessary. Given our history, I thought we were already familiar.”Â
She raised an eyebrow, and I could tell she was irritated because I hadn’t switched my tone to respect. She can dream on.Â
“My my…” She murmured before clicking her tongue. “You’re an impulsive one.”Â
The most acceptable thing I have ever heard her say since I met her.Â
“I’m Catherine. Catherine King. And you are? I don’t believe we have ever met.”Â
Right from the corner of my eye, I saw a brief smile touch Ares‘ lips.Â
“King…” I noticed her grip on her cane tightened, and she spoke low but stern. “I have never seen anyone so greedy to claim that name. Do you have any idea what that name means? The weight of being a King? Are you able to comprehend the importance of being a King’s woman?”Â
This-!Â
“Careful, Grandmother…” Ares said, voice cold.Â

“Careful?” She sounded insulted.Â
“It’s alright, honey.” I slipped my arm into his, and she observed the action, eyes catching the diamond on my finger.Â
“Ah…” she voiced. “Seems like your business trip came with a package. Then I’m in tl wrong here because this is clearly not a random woman…”Â
I swear to God I’m gonna-!Â
“I’m Constance King. The oldest King and Grandmother to two lovely twins who don‘ appreciate family.”Â
That switch was wild, but I’m still struck that she’s gonna pretend she hasn’t known me until now.Â
Was this some kind of game or something? It might as well be.Â
“Now… let us not bite on each other’s heads for the tension in this wide enough to blind this poor old woman.”Â
Figures.Â

“You must all be tired, especially my grandchild. Let us all head to the estate so that w may catch up. Apparently, there is much to do, because your business trip wasn’t so much of it.”Â
Estate. That estate. I got the chills recalling that place.Â
“That won’t be necessary,” Ares stated, hotly.Â
Well, in my head, anything that came out of that mouth of his was hot and enough to bring me to my knees.Â
Constance’s smile faded faster than a train wreck. Does she honestly believe that Ares was just gonna say yes to her? Despite my dislike for the King’s estate, I knew Ares didn’t like that place either because it was consumed with his mother’s memories.Â
“Are you going to deny an old woman having some time with family?” She shifted her eyes to me. “Particularly now you have a fiancée.”Â
“Wife,” Ares corrected.Â
Be still, my beating heart! I’m gonna shower this man with kisses.Â
A chuckle rolled off her, sudden but wild. “Oh, my… wife? You took what I said to heartÂ

about you settling down with utmost consideration.”Â
Sarcasm much?Â
“However, I do recall telling you that I was going to make the union. I already have a perfect woman-!Â
Ares led me away, and the tension that had gripped the air only tightened further. I could feel her gaze burning through my back, and I had a gnawing feeling that thisÂ
wasn’t over.Â
“Perfect woman?” I asked, already feeling an annoyance build that there was a woma out there waiting for a fucking ring.Â
“Ignore her.”Â
I halted and so suddenly grabbed the collar of his coat and brought him down for a kiss.Â
Constance was still watching. I wanted her to know that this man is mine, and I inten to stay.Â
I forced my tongue into his, making it hot and enough to switch the dark tension to a sensual one, but I yanked my lips off, swaying my tongue through it as if I had tasted candy.Â
“Shall we?”Â
Ares traced his thumb on his lips, eyes dark and wild like he was gonna get a hold of me again, but he simply opened the car door for me.Â

The drive to the penthouse was nostalgic in a way. I could still remember the streets, tall buildings, and all. Despite the windows up, I knew the familiar loudness was gonna get me down a long memory lane.Â
Esme was sitting on my lap, and her eyes were glued to the window as she stared in amazement, like she had entered a whole new world.Â
When we arrived at the penthouse, it was dark, and Esme was already asleep, exhausted from the long journey.Â
Ares had told the driver to keep moving to satisfy Esme’s wonder, so it was more like we took a tour through half of the city until her eyelids grew heavy. Now she’s knockedÂ

out from all the sightseeing.Â
When the car came to a stop, my eyes connected with the building. Like a fast replay in my brain, the memories flooded me until I went utterly still.Â
“Baby?”Â
I flinched, snapping out of it. Nervous, I didn’t meet his eyes, getting out of the car.Â
“Mrs. King.”Â
I gasped, “Julian!”Â
I’d have hugged him if I weren’t carrying Esme.Â
He nodded, his broad smile making his wrinkles show. “It’s good to have you back.”Â
His words tugged at my heartstrings.Â
“I requested to see you before I retire. I’m glad I finally got the chance to.”Â
I nodded, stretching my hand, and he took it with both of his.Â
“Welcome back, and I wish you all the happiness.”Â
My voice choked with emotion. “Thank you.”Â
