271 The NameÂ
“Please, Don King… you don’t need to do that. After all, in those times, sons killed their fathers to take power. I was aware of your conflict with your stepbrother and the conditions that were given if you wanted even a little of your inheritance. Elias played a dangerous game there when he did that. I warned him, but he didn’t listen. I guess you finally snapped and did what you needed to do to obtain your rights.” (1)Â
I overestimated his talents to get information. He doesn’t know as much as he thought. I didn’t kill Elias for inheritance. Everything was already mine.Â
Carlo snapped his finger, and drinks were brought. The rocks glass was set on the table, and the decanter. The server poured the vodka.Â
“I still can’t tell why you have come all this way. You have barely said a word. Please, Don King, I’m all ears.”Â
“Your usefulness,” I said.Â
There was a sparkle in his brown eyes, like a dog finally given a purpose.Â
“My usefulness…” he murmured, taking a shot of his drink in speed, finishing it up inÂ
one go.Â
He chuckled, his shoulders shaking even though he had more weight on them.Â
“I’m honored by your words.”Â
“You know more about Constance King, before she left Midnight years ago, and now she’s back, One way or the other, you must have obtained delicate information over the years.”Â
“I know a handful, yes. You’re the first to ask, so you’re just in luck.”Â
I took a sip from the glass before I set it down.Â
“HerÂ
eyes… the invisible telescope that has been hanging above my head ever since she left Midnight years ago. A way to keep an eye on her family.”Â
His smile strained.Â
“What do you know about this person… I need a name.”Â
“How much are you willing to give me for that information?”Â

The sound of guns cocking filled the space. Carlo flinched, wide eyes on my men pointing their pistols.Â
“What gave you the impression I was here to buy information?”Â
His mouth opened, but he couldn’t form the words, finding it difficult and onlyÂ
stutters could be made.Â
“I–I–I–I… t–thought…”Â
“Elias may have paid you for your usefulness, but I’m not him. You pride yourself in this channel because my family’s money has gotten you round and fat in your old age. But make no mistake, Carlo… I’m not them…”Â
“W–We are business partners, aren’t we? To maintain good faith?”Â

He gulped. “T–Then my usefulness to you will take a different turn, but I do hope it will benefit me in…” He looked behind me for a minute, and there I could see his life flashing before them. “I mean this in good faith and to your advantage. Only to your advantage, Don King.”Â
I leaned back on my seat and crossed my legs. I could hear a rustle behind me, my men retreating their guns, and Carlo took a deep breath of relief.Â
“T–There is an opening… a grand one. I’d like you to attend and support me.”Â
I narrowed my eyes.Â
“To be honest, no one expects you to show your face, just as you haven’t in the last few years. This would be a good time and…” He paused.Â
“Go on,”Â
He seemed happy now. “It wouldn’t just benefit you, but your newly married status, Showing up with your wife would be marvelous, and-”Â
“Showing myself is enough. The statement will be made.”Â
“O–Of course… as the Don so wishes. Your presence alone will be bold.”Â
He grew tense when I just bled my eyes into his… he was shaking, and I could tell he wanted to look away but didn’t find the courage to.Â
“Tell me what I need to know. And this… opening of yours.”Â

I stepped out of the speakeasy. The weather had changed, the clouds gathering, swallowing up the light, making everything gloomy.Â
The car door opened for me, but I didn’t step in. I took a last drag of my cigar before casting the rest on the ground.Â
I released smoke from my nostrils, digesting everything Carlo told me. He ended up spilling more than I wanted, a good amount of information.Â
He was very eager for me to attend this opening of his and even called in profits. Carlo was all about profits… I was wrong to think he was a loyal dog, more of a loyal glutton.Â
The umbrella was opened for me as the rain poured down. I checked my watch, it was still early, yet the weather made it seem like we were heading towards night.Â
I got inside the car and grabbed my iPad, checking the feed.Â
Catherine was sitting on my desk now, legs crossed as her eyes scanned papers as she organised them, a pen hung on top of her ear. I admired how spontaneous and comfortable she was in my space.Â
I took my phone and sent her a text.Â
Me: I’ll be back soon, baby,Â
I observed as her attention diverted to her phone, but the other side of the door was open as Nico got in.Â
“Boss…”Â
I inhaled, shoving my phone in my pocket,Â
“You don’t look too happy. Did Carlo not talk? I wager he wouldn’t.”Â
“He did,” I turned off the feed,Â
“That’s bad news. He gave you a name?”Â
“Reed Cross.”Â
Nico froze before his face painted in shock. “H–He gotta be lying… Reed is a dickhead, but he doesn’t have the balls to be an inside man.”Â
At my silence, Nico cursed. “Fucking shit! Working for your grandmother? I never saw this coming.”Â

This made me fume more, but at the same time, I wasn’t exactly as pissed when Carlo gave me his name.Â
I have had my suspicions ever since Penrose.Â
“He was loyal… and skilled. He grew to be someone I could trust…” I said, bitterness in my tone.Â
I made a big mistake, way before I made him Catherine’s bodyguard.Â
