Hunter hung up the call and collapsed onto the floor like a puppet with its strings cut, all the strength drained from his body.
Celine crouched beside him, her voice soft and gentle. “Hunter, please don’t be too upset. Dana’s going to be okay.”
But instead of comfort, all she got was Hunter’s hand tightening around her throat.
His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at her. “If anything happens to Dana, I swear I won’t let you walk away from this. You better pray, every minute of every day, that she comes back alive. Because if she dies, we’re going to hell together.”
Celine’s face went ghostly pale. “Y–you’re going to kill me? You’d actually kill me for her? No–you can’t! Hunter, have you forgotten? When you were critically injured, I was the one who nearly died giving you my blood to save you!
“And Dana? She knew you were hurt and didn’t come back. She was off living it up overseas like nothing happened. She never cared. The only one who’s ever truly loved you is me! How could you kill me for her?”
Hunter’s voice dropped to a deadly calm. “If it weren’t for the fact that you once risked your life to save mine, I would’ve ended this the first day you laid a finger on Dana.
“I thought a lot last night,” he continued. “We’ve messed with Dana again and again for the last few years. Even after all that, whenever I asked for help, she showed up–no hesitation, no questions asked. That kind of loyalty? That’s love.
“Something must have gone wrong back then. There’s no way Dana bailed on me. I know her–she wouldn’t have abandoned me.”
Celine’s eyes turned red with jealousy.
She couldn’t understand. How was she still second to Dana? How, after everything she’d done for Hunter, was Dana still the one he cherished?
Yes, Hunter had promised to marry her and treated her well. But deep down, Celine knew–his kindness was nothing more than a guilty repayment.
What Dana had was real. He trusted and cared for her completely. Unquestioned.
Why? Why, Dana? Why her?
Celine finally snapped, her voice trembling with rage. “I gave you everything! What does she have that I don’t? I wanted to get rid of her because I love you! What did I do wrong?”
Hunter’s brow furrowed. “You think love justifies murder? Since when does slapping the word ‘love‘ on something make it forgivable?”
Celine had no answer. She just stared at him, her hands clenched, her face twisted with defiance and disbelief.
Hunter’s hand still gripped her throat, not loosening.
They were locked in a silent standoff–until the shrill ring of Celine’s phone broke the tension.
Hunter glanced down. It was a video call–again, from the same doctor as yesterday.
What kind of doctor calls the patient this often?

And why video call?
Even if this is a follow–up call from the doctor, why would her expression change the second the phone rang?
Something is off. Deeply off.
As Celine reached to decline the call, Hunter moved faster
He grabbed the phone, pushed her down, and pinned both her wrists above her head with one hand. Then he answered.
Before the other person could speak, Celine blurted out, “Dr. Holden, I remember our appointment. I’ll come in later for my follow- up, okay?”
The man on the screen scoffed. “Celine, quit the act. What follow–up? I’m not a real doctor, remember? You’ve been playing pretend so long you’re fooling yourself now?”
He leaned back, clipping his nails casually. “Listen, I’m done being your puppet. After all I’ve done for you, three million doesn’t cut it anymore. I want five million now. If you don’t pay up, I’ll go straight to Hunter and spill every dirty secret you’ve been hiding.”
Before Lonnie Holden could finish, Hunter had already sensed something wasn’t right.
He shoved his palm over Celine’s mouth before she could shout, tossing the phone onto the floor so he could hear everything.
Meanwhile, Lonnie kept clipping his nails, rambling on in his own little world, completely unaware that something was very wrong on the other end of the line.
Celine’s face turned as pale as chalk.
Hunter let go of her and picked up the phone, his voice laced with a cold, amused malice. “I’ll give you 10 million. But first–tell me what exactly Celine’s been hiding from me.”
Lonnie froze. Slowly, he looked up and saw Hunter’s face on the screen–calm, expressionless, and absolutely terrifying.
His brain turned blank. Panic surged through him. He fumbled to hang up.
But Hunter had already anticipated it. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” he said smoothly. “I suggest you answer honestly. What kind of dirty little deal have you and Celine been hiding?”
His voice sent a chill straight to the bone, like the devil whispering from the depths of hell.
There was silence. Then Hunter said quietly, “You still have a wife and kid, right?”
