Chapter 3 The Pretty Little Lies
When Hunter spoke, Dana was already awake, her eyes quietly fixed on him.
The moment their eyes met, Hunter jolted in surprise.

His expression twitched with unease. Without saying a word, he typed something on his phone and showed it to her. “Are you feeling okay anywhere?”
Dana shook her head.
Just as Hunter was about to speak again, his phone rang, interrupting the moment.
Assuming Dana still couldn’t hear, Hunter answered the call without hesitation.
Celine’s shrill voice blared through the speaker. “Hunter, where are you?”
“I’m at the hospital. Why?” he replied.
“I just watched the footage from the warehouse. I–I think my head’s hurting again. I feel like some memories are starting to come back. Can you come to see me, just for a little while?”
Hunter glanced at Dana lying pale on the hospital bed, clearly torn. “Well…”
Before he could decide, his buddy jumped in and answered for him, “Come on, nothing matters more to Hunter than Celine. He’ll be right over. Just wait for him at home, alright?”
Celine giggled sweetly. “Okay, I’ll be waiting.”
Once the call ended, the friend clapped Hunter on the shoulder with a grin. “Don’t worry about a thing, we’ve got Dana. She’ll be just fine.”
Hunter hesitated, casting one last, uneasy look at Dana. But the thought of Celine waiting for him made him sigh and grit his teeth.
If he didn’t go, Celine would probably be upset.
Considering this, Hunter clenched his jaw and let out a long sigh. “Alright,” he said, “I’ll be back soon. You guys stay here and take good care of her.”
His buddies exchanged sly smiles. “You can count on us, Hunter. She’s in good hands.”
Before leaving, Hunter gently ruffled Dana’s hair. He tapped out a message on his phone. “Something urgent came up at work. I’ll be back later. Be good.”
He was about to leave when something seemed to click in his mind.
Hunter returned. He pulled out a pill from his pocket and held it out in front of Dana.
Dana’s eyes widened instantly. She recognized it. That was the same pill that made her go deaf.
She remembered clearly. When she first lost her hearing, she’d collapsed into Hunter’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. She had cried that she would never be able to compose another piano piece again.

Hunter had teared up too and typed a message to comfort her. “It’s okay. To me, you’ll always be the greatest pianist in the world.”
The next day, he brought her this pill, saying it was specially formulated by a friend overseas, tailored just for her condition.
He told her if she took it regularly, she’d be cured.
Dana had been deeply moved back then.
She believed it was a gift of love–only to learn it was poison wrapped in sweetness.
If it hadn’t been for a recent cold that made her wary of mixing medications, she would’ve kept taking the pill and stayed trapped in that pretty lie Hunter built for her.
Dana looked up and asked softly, “Can I not take it?”
Hunter gently rubbed her head again and typed, “Take it. It’s for your own good.”
For my own good?
She was once a musical prodigy. He knew what losing her hearing meant to her.
Three whole years. She hadn’t touched a piano, hadn’t composed a single piece.
Three years of being a housewife, giving everything to Hunter–yet none of it earned even a shred of true affection from him.
She looked at Hunter; the last flicker of love in her heart quietly died.
With trembling fingers, Dana took the pill. She pretended to swallow it and carefully hid it up her sleeve.
Hunter smiled. “Good girl.”
Dana watched his retreating figure disappear from the room, then glanced at her phone.
She had been unconscious for a full day.
One more day–and Jamie would come for her.
After tomorrow, she would be free. And she and Hunter would be nothing but strangers.
