Chapter 19Â
He gave a low laugh.Â
“Then so be it.”Â
He dragged me into the living room.Â
I fell onto the sofa,Â
my elbow hitting the table-Â
pain shot through my arm.Â
He poured a glass of water,Â
set it in front of me.Â
“Drink.”Â
I looked up at him.Â
“What do you want?”Â
“For you to calm down.”Â
I laughed-shaking, bitter.Â
“Rory, do you think I could ever be calm?Â
You’ve ruined my life,Â
my freedom-Â
and now you want calm?”Â
He was silent for a long moment,Â
then lowered his head.Â
His voice broke softly.Â
“I just… want you to stay.”Â
I froze.Â
When he looked up,Â
his eyes were too still-Â
too quiet to be sane.Â
“Wendy,” he whispered,Â
“It’s a miracle I haven’t gone completely mad these three years.”Â
“You should have,” I spat.Â
“You killed my child.”Â
The air went dead.Â
Faded love I don’t want it anymoreÂ

His face went pale.Â
“That wasn’t-”Â
“Wasn’t an accident?” I laughed bitterly.Â
“When you signed, did your hand tremble?”Â
He suddenly reached out,Â
covering my mouth.Â
“Don’t say it.”Â
I pushed him away, tears spilling.Â
“Why?Â
Afraid of the truth?”Â
He stepped back,Â
his throat working.Â
“The doctors said if I didn’t sign,Â
you’d die.Â
I had no choice.”Â
“I begged you not to sign,” I whispered.Â
“And you did.”Â
“I thought-”Â
“You thought reason could save us.”Â
I cut him off.Â
“You were wrong.Â
You saved yourself.”Â
He closed his eyes,Â
breathing deep.Â
“Then now, I’ll save you.”Â
“I don’t need it,” I said coldly.Â
That night, I lay awake in the bedroom.Â
Rain whispered against the windows.Â
The house was suffocatingly quiet.Â
I could hear footsteps outside the door. He was pacing the hall.Â

I turned away, eyes shut,Â
but all I saw was that white lightÂ
over the operating table-Â
his silhouette,Â
signing the form that ended me.Â
Tears slid down my cheek.Â
I whispered into the dark,Â
“Save me?Â
Rory, you were my damnation.”Â
Morning.Â
When I woke,Â
a folder sat on the desk.Â
It was his handwriting:Â
Wendy, welcome home.Â
From today, you resume all rights as Mrs. Zhou of Z Group.Â
I’ll handle the media. You don’t need to go outside.Â
-RoryÂ
I stared at the paper,Â
feeling the cold seep into my bones.Â
He hadn’t saved me.Â
He’d just found a new way to cage me.Â
The door opened.Â
He stood there, calm as ever.Â
“Did you sleep well?”Â
I didn’t answer.Â
“With you here,” I said quietly,Â
“I can’t even breathe.”Â
He smiled faintly,Â
his tone gentle, coaxing.Â
“You don’t need peace.Â
You just need to stay.”Â

“This is imprisonment.”Â
“Yes.”Â
His voice was soft.Â
“But I’ll keep you kindly imprisoned.”Â
I stared at him.Â
He smiled again,Â
:Â
tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.Â
“Don’t be afraid.Â
You can’t escape me-Â
and you don’t need to.”Â
Then he stepped back,Â
his voice low and certain.Â
“From today, we start over.”Â
The door closed.Â
I sat on the edge of the bed,Â
fingers numb.Â
Sunlight poured through the window-Â
warm, almost blinding.Â
I laughed softly.Â
“Rory,” I whispered,Â
“you want to start again?Â
Then I’ll follow you-Â
all the way down.”Â
The windows had new locks now.Â
Iron-grey frames, cold as winter.Â
He no longer shouted.Â
He was gentler,Â
almost tender.Â
Each morning,Â
he’d knock on the doorÂ
and leave breakfast outside-Â
