Chapter 10Â
I ducked into the footwell, curling up as the car lurched forward. Something hit the side-fists, rocks, I couldn’t tell. The tires squealed as Daniel accelerated hard, taking turns too fast.Â
“Daniel, what’s happening?!” I was crying, terrified.Â
“Hold on!”Â
After several minutes of frantic driving, his hand touched my shoulder. “It’s okay. We’re on human roads now. They won’t follow.”Â
Slowly. I climbed back into my seat, trembling.Â
“What the hell was that?”Â
Daniel’s face was pale. “I’m sorry. God, Isla, I’m so sorry.”Â
He pulled into a McDonald’s parking lot and sat there, hands over his face.Â
“There’s a girl. Maddie. I got involved with her-she had a mate already. He found out.” He gestured behind us. “That was him and her family.”Â

I stared at him, anger replacing fear. “Are you insane?”Â
“I know, I know-”Â
“And you didn’t think to mention this before dragging me across their territory?!”Â
“I thought we’d be fine! I didn’t think-Â
“No, you didn’t think!” I wanted to hit him. “Is there anything else?”Â
Silence.Â
“Daniel.”Â
He wouldn’t look at me. “She’s pregnant. They think it might be mine. Her father is demanding I take responsibility.”Â
“Oh my God.” I shoved him. “Daniel!”Â
“Her father says if it’s mine, I have to mark her, make her my mate. Please don’t tell Mom/not with her being sick.”Â
I wanted to scream at him. Instead, I got out. “I need the bathroom.”Â
Inside the McDonald’s, I splashed cold water on my face. I’d been back in the werewolf world for less than a day and had already nearly been killed because of my brother’s mess.Â
When I returned, Daniel had ordered food. We ate in tense silence.Â
“You have to fix this,” I said finally. “After Mom, you face them. Take responsibility.”Â
“I will. I promise.”Â
As we finally crossed onto Pembroke Pack lands, my stomach clenched. The packhouse looked exactly the same-imposing stone structure, immaculately kept grounds.Â
“Ready?” Daniel killed the engine.Â

That’s when I heard the shouting.Â
“You lied to me! You think it’s okay to treat me like this? I’m your Luna-I deserve respect!”Â
Mora’s voice carried across the grounds. Through the windshield, I saw them-Miller and Mora near the packhouse entrance.Â
Mora was visibly pregnant.Â
My breath caught.Â
“She was nothing compared to you,” Miller was saying, reaching for her. She slapped his hands away. “You’re the one I want.”Â
“Then why were you with her?”Â
Not me. Someone else. He’d been cheating on his chosen mate.Â
I slowly opened the car door, hoping to slip away.Â
“Isla? Where are you going?” Daniel called out.Â
Damn it.Â
Mora whipped around. “Isla? What-”Â
Then Miller turned.Â
Our eyes met for the first time in five years.Â
I watched shock cross his face. His eyes went wide, moving over me like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.Â
I liftedÂ
myÂ
chin and stood up straighter. I wasn’t that girl anymore.Â
“You!” Mora stormed toward me. “What the hell are you doing here?”Â
Miller ran after her. “Mora, stop-”Â
She grabbed a handful of my hair and yanked. Pain shot through my scalp.Â
“Let her go!” Miller caught her around the waist, pulling her back while she fought him.Â
“Get away from my sister!” Daniel jumped between us.Â
“That bitch has been sleeping with my mate!” Mora screamed.Â
I actually laughed. I couldn’t help it. “Are you serious? I just got here.”Â
“My sister hasn’t been anywhere near your mate,” Daniel said.Â
“As if I’d ever touch him,” I added. “He’s all yours.”Â
Miller set Mora down but he was still staring at me. The way he looked at me-like I was something precious he’d lost-made my skin crawl.Â
“I wasn’t with Isla,” Miller said quietly.Â
“Then why are you looking at her like that?” Mora’s voice cracked. “Like you regret everything?”Â
“Our mother is dying,” Daniel said flatly. “We’re here for her. That’s all.”Â
“Isla?”Â

Chapter 10Â
My sister Cora came running out of the packhouse. She threw her arms around me like we were best friends.Â
“Oh my god, you’re back! You look amazing!”Â
This was strange. Cora had barely looked at me five years ago. But now she was beaming, linking her arm through mine.Â
“We have so much to catch up on! Do you have a mate? We should totally go shopping together!”Â
She pulled me toward the house. Behind us, I heard Mora yelling at Miller.Â
“Did you know she was coming back?”Â
Once we were out of earshot, Cora leaned in. “She’s so paranoid. Everyone can see Miller regrets what he did. And now that you’re back looking like this? She must be losing her mind.”Â
I glanced back once. Miller was still standing there, staring after me.Â
Good. Let him regret it.Â
I turned back to the house and didn’t look at him again.Â
I was only here for my mother.Â
She needed me, and she was all that mattered right now.Â
