Chapter 5

Chapter 5

I drifted in darkness for what felt like eternities before consciousness slowly returned. The medication kept my eyes heavy, but my wolf hearing picked up nearby voices familiar ones.

“Alpha, you’ve let this go too far. Isla values her hands more than life itself – her nursing career depends on them. By choosing to treat Mora first, you could have destroyed her. Is that what you wanted?”

“How could I want to harm Isla ? She woke at the worst moment. If I’d chosen to treat her first, my memory loss deception would have been exposed. There’s only twenty days left until the full moon ceremony – I just want to play a bit longer. I won’t let anything happen to her.”

“Nothing happen? Did you not hear the surgeon? Another minute’s delay and Isla ‘s hands would have been permanently damaged. If she learns the truth, you’ll lose any chance of salvaging your mate bond. The Moon Goddess herself couldn’t repair that betrayal.”

The person holding my hand tensed at these words, their palm now slick with anxiety. I could smell his wolf’s distress even through the medication

haze.

Minutes later, I felt lips brush my forehead, the voice rich with certainty. “She’ll never know. Everything’s arranged. In twenty-three days, the doctors will declare my memories returned. Everything will be as it was.”

After a heavy sigh, one set of footsteps left the room.

The other remained, murmuring softly by my bedside. “Isla, our mating ceremony is so close. I’ve already commissioned the bonding rings – silver from the Sacred Peaks, forged under the full moon. You’ll see them the day my ‘memories’ return.”

“After our bond is sealed and the marking ceremony complete, I’ll take you to see the Aurora Borealis. Remember three years ago, when you made that wish upon the falling star during the pack gathering?”

“When you said

the moon.”

wanted to be with me forever… I’ve never been happier. I want to grow old by your side too, watch our pups learn to shift under

As the medication wore off, I recognized the voice of my rambling visitor.

Miller. My supposed fated mate.

He seemed devoted to my care, summoning nurses every half hour to check my condition. He tenderly helped me drink water, adjusted my blankets, never leaving my side – playing the perfect mate.

Until I fully awoke.

–

All that tender attention vanished like morning mist as he hurriedly retreated from my room, his alpha scent thick with unease and guilt.

Watching his hasty departure, my eyes filled with bitter amusement. Even my wolf, usually so attuned to our mate, whimpered in confusion at his rejection.

Minutes later, a nurse entered to check on me. I noticed how carefully she concealed the medical charts, her heartbeat quickening – she was afraid of the Alpha.

“Who’s been caring for me these past days?” My voice was rough from disuse.

The nurse’s eyes darted away, her words stumbling. “I’m not… not certain. Hospital staff, I believe.””

I felt bone-weary. Even my wolf had retreated deep within, wounded.

I checked my phone. November 8th. I’d been unconscious for three days.

My messages contained only work emails and pack notices nothing from my supposed mate.

I closed my eyes, silently praying to the Moon Goddess that my name-change application would be approved soon. I needed to sever every tie.

Miller stayed away after that, but Mora flooded me with messages daily.

Half were taunts and intimate photos of them together – her marked neck prominently displayed.

The other half were recordings from various locations, including our shared bed.

I never opened them, blocking her number entirely. My wolf howled in pain with each notification.

On November 15th, I completed my discharge process.

Gathering my prescriptions and discarding everything else, I headed for the exit.

At the entrance, I encountered a former packmate who had once sought to court me during our training years – before Miller had claimed me as his fated mate.

As we caught up pleasantly, Miller materialized from nowhere with alpha speed, yanking me away with his dominant strength.

His face was dark as storm clouds, eyes flickering gold as his wolf surfaced dangerously close. “Who gave you permission to get so close to him? You’re still mine.”

The alpha command in his voice made my wolf want to submit, but I pushed her down.

I met his gaze coolly, pulling my wrist from his bruising grip. “Didn’t you lose your memories? Deny me as your mate? Who I choose to speak with is no longer your concern. The mate bond means nothing if you don’t honor it.”

Without waiting for his response, I hailed a passing black sedan and disappeared into the evening traffic, leaving Miller speechless in the hospital’s parking lot, his wolf howling after me in confusion.
