Chapter 6Â
After weeks of medication and rest, my wounds began to mend. When I calculated my savings, I realized I was still short on funds for Crestwood General Hospital’s tuition.Â
Fortunately, I had my photography gigs on the side to make some extra money. It started simply – snapping photos to cheer up my patients at the clinic. Turned out I had a knack for it, and word got around in Shadowpine territory. Before long, pack members were booking me for their ceremonies and celebrations.Â
That day, a timely commission came through from an old client – a significant photography job for a high-society pack gathering.Â
I accepted without hesitation. But when I arrived at the venue, my blood ran cold.Â
Miller was there, escorting Mora through the entrance. His hand rested on her lower back – possessive, intimate.Â
Run. My wolf screamed at me to turn around and leave.Â
But I’d signed the contract. The money was already deposited. I forced my feet to move toward the setup area and started unpacking my equipment. My hands shook as I attached the lens.Â
“Well, well. Look who they sent.”Â
Mora’s voice cut through the chatter. Her designer dress rustled as she glided toward me, every movement showing off her new status. She stopped inches from my camera setup, leaning down to tap one manicured nail against my lens.Â
“Listen carefully, photographer.” Her lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “I want you shooting from below – emphasize my position. Dim lighting for mystique. And don’t you dare catch any bad angles during the ceremony.”Â
“Understood,” I said quietly, adjusting my camera settings.Â
“Higher. No, lower. Tilt it more. The lighting’s all wrong – fix it!”Â
For the next hour, I crouched, stood, repositioned, and adjusted. Hundreds of shots, and still –Â
“Again! Do you even know what you’re doing?”Â
A sharp pain shot through my wrist – still healing from the “accident” just weeks ago.Â
I gritted my teeth and repositioned once more, the bandages tight under my sleeve. My wolf whimpered.Â
Finally, I handed her the camera to review the latest batch. She scrolled through them, her expression growing more disdainful with each swipe.Â
“This is what you call photography?” Mora’s voice dripped with contempt. “How do you even get hired for this? Look at this – I’m gorgeous and you somehow made me look… ordinary.”Â
She thrust the camera back at me.Â
“You know what? Forget it. Just use the first set. No point wasting more time – you clearly can’t do any better than this.”Â
Soft laughter rippled through the watching pack members, many of whom had hired me before.Â
I rose stiffly from my crouched position, saying nothing. My silence only seemed to fuel her desire to humiliate me further.Â
Suddenly, she turned and pressed herself against Miller, her hand sliding up his chest. Then she looked back at me over her shoulder.Â
“Now take some photos of us together. Intimate ones.” Her smile was sharp. “I want everyone to see what a real mate bond looks like.”Â

Something flickered across my face before I could stop it. Then I went still.Â
I raised my camera. Click. Mora leaned into Miller, her lips near his neck. Click. Her hands tangled in his hair. Click. She pulled him down for a kiss, long and deliberate.Â
My wolf whimpered and retreated somewhere deep inside, unable to watch.Â
Around us, whispers started.Â
“They look perfect together.”Â
“She’s so confident, so beautiful. That’s what an Alpha needs.”Â
“Right? Not like that plain thing he was with before. What did he even see in her?”Â
“I heard she was so boring he could barely stand it. No wonder he upgraded.”Â
Miller’s body tensed. He broke the kiss and glanced toward me, something uncomfortable flashing in his eyes.Â
But I kept my face blank, reviewing the shots on my camera screen like I was photographing strangers at any other event. My wolf had gone quiet. Maybe that was a blessing.Â
At eleven, it finally ended. Four hours. I was trying to wipe champagne off my shirt – Mora had “accidentally” spilled her glass on me – when I heard heels clicking toward me.Â
“You need money pretty badly, don’t you?” Mora’s smile was all teeth. “I have one more job. Private session. Double your rate.”Â
I hesitated. Thought about Crestwood General Hospital’s tuition. About getting out of Shadowpine.Â
“Fine.”Â
She led me upstairs to a suite and had me set up the camera in a dark corner. When someone knocked, her smile changed into something hungry.Â
“Get everything,” she whispered, positioning herself to block me from view. Then she opened the door.Â
Miller walked in, not expecting me to be there.Â
What followed – I couldn’t look away even though everything in me wanted to. Mora pulled him close. Decorations crashed to the floor. CandlesÂ
flickered.Â
My hand gripped the tripod so hard it hurt.Â
“What do you have planned tonight?” Miller’s voice was rough.Â
“Everything you want…” Mora’s hands moved over him.Â
The room grew warm. Heavy. Miller responded to her, his wolf rising to the surface.Â

Something cracked inside my chest. Each breath felt like glass in my lungs. My wolf was screaming somewhere I couldn’t reach, feeling the bond between us tearing apart. Every second lasted forever.Â
This was Mora’s real revenge – not just stealing him, but making me watch. Making me press the shutter. Forcing me to record the death of everything I believed in.Â
