Chapter 9Â
Chapter 9Â
Five years later.Â
The phone call came on a Tuesday morning.Â
“Isla.” Daniel’s voice was tight. “Mom’s sick. You need to come home.”Â
I froze, the coffee mug halfway to my lips.Â
“It’s serious,” he continued. “The doctors aren’t sure how much time she has left.”Â
My hand trembled as I set down the mug.Â
The truth was, Mom and I had never been close. She’d always favored Daniel and Cora. I was just the youngest-the inconvenient one. Even when Miller hurt me five years ago, when I’d needed her most, she’d stayed silent. It was easier for her to pretend I didn’t exist than to defend me.Â
Daniel was different, I suppose. Not that we were close-he’d left home for work when I was still a teenager. But somehow he’d found out what happened, and he’d checked in a few times over the years.Â
“Isla, did you hear me?”Â
His voice pulled me back.Â
“I heard you.” My voice came out steadier than I felt. “When?”Â
“Now. Today if possible. She’s asking for all of us.” He paused. “Even Cora.”Â
Cora. My sister, who was basically the same as not having one at all.Â
“I’ll be ready in an hour,” I said finally.Â
After hanging up, I stared at my reflection in the window. The scared, broken girl who’d fled this pack was gone. In her place stood someone stronger-hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail, shoulders straight, wearing scrubs from my hospital rotation.Â
Five whole years, and I’d never gone back.Â
In that time, I’d finished nursing school, gotten my own apartment, made new friends. Built a completely new life.Â
Just when I thought I’d never have to look back, fate came calling.Â
“You okay?”Â
My roommate Zara appeared in the kitchen doorway, coffee cup in hand. I’d told her everything over the past five years-Miller; Mora, all of it. She’d helped piece me back together.Â
“My mom’s sick,” I said quietly. “I have to go back.”Â
Zara’s eyes widened. “Back to Pembroke? Isla, are you sure-”Â
“I don’t have a choice.” I was already heading to my room to pack. “It’s my mother.”Â
“Then I’m coming with you.”Â
“No.” The word came out harsher than intended. “Zara, I appreciate it, but no. I can’t risk you getting caught up in pack politics. Besides…” I managed a weak smile. “I need you here. Someone to come back to.”Â

She hugged me tightly. “Call me every day. And if that asshole ex-mate of yours tries anything-”Â
“He won’t.” I pulled away, shouldering my bag. “He’s probably forgotten I exist.”Â
Daniel was waiting outside in his black Jeep, engine running. The moment I saw his face-lined with worry, older than I remembered-my anger at having to return softened slightly.Â
“Hey, little sis.” He got out to help with my bag, pulling me into a hug. “You look good. Really good.”Â
“Don’t sound so surprised.” I managed a small smile. “Five years of actually eating properly and not being constantly stressed will do that.”Â
He laughed, but it didn’t reach his eyes. We loaded my bags into the Jeep and started the drive.Â
For the first two hours, we drove in comfortable silence. Daniel asked about nursing school, about my life in the city. I told him about my rotation at the hospital, about Zara and the small apartment we shared.Â
“I’m proud of you, Isla,” he said quietly. “For making a life for yourself.”Â
“I’m not that broken girl anymore.”Â
“I can see that.”Â
But as we continued driving, I noticed Daniel kept checking the rearview mirror, his hands gripping the steering wheel too tightly. When he suddenly pulled off onto a smaller road, my unease grew.Â
“Where are we going? This isn’t the way to Pembroke.”Â
“Just need to make a quick stop for food,” he said, but his jaw was tight.Â
He pulled into a small roadside cafe. Inside, the place was quiet, just a few customers scattered around. A waitress in a blue uniform approached with a smile.Â

“What can I get for you?”Â
I was scanning the menu when Daniel suddenly grabbed my arm.Â
“Change of plan. We’re leaving.”Â
“What? We just got here-”Â
“Now, Isla.”Â
I followed his gaze to three large, burly men in the corner. They were staring directly at us, their eyes cold and predatory.Â
My blood ran cold.Â
We were halfway to the door when one of them stood. “That’s him.”Â
“Run!” Daniel shoved me forward,Â
We burst out of the cafe. Behind us, chairs scraped and clattered. Heavy footsteps pounded the pavement.Â
“Get in!” Daniel fumbled with his keys, hands shaking.Â
I yanked the door open just as one of the men caught up. His fist slammed into the window beside my head. The glass spiderwebbed.Â
I screamed.Â
“You think you can just walk away?” he snarled, grabbing for the door handle.Â

The engine roared to life. Daniel threw the Jeep into reverse, tires squealing.Â
“Get down!” he yelled.Â
