Half a month flew by, and it was finally payday.
To be honest, I felt a bit guilty about owing Ethan a meal for so long.
As soon as I got my paycheck, I excitedly knocked on his office door and eagerly said, “Director Gu, I got paid today. Let me treat you to something delicious tonight.”
Ethan was on the phone, but he smiled and nodded at me, “Alright, what shall we eat tonight?”
I gestured at his phone, “Come find me when you’re done.”
It was after work hours and everyone had left, so I didn’t think I was doing anything
inappropriate.
So I hummed a little tune and started working overtime.
The company was now selecting proposals for the China project, and I needed to work
harder.
Half an hour later, Ethan came out of his office and said apologetically, “Lily, I was on the phone with my mother in my office just now.”
I quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”
Ethan shook his head and said somewhat tentatively, “Do you like lobster? My mother
wants to invite you to dinner at our house tomorrow.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
I was completely confused.
Ethan scratched the back of his head, looking a bit shy, “My mother knows I like you a
lot. She wants to help me out.”
That was quite direct.
I was dumbfounded, my face turning red.
Now that it was out in the open, he reverted to his usual gentle demeanor, “I was planning to confess to you after a while, but I’m afraid my mom will come over on Monday. I’ve never been in a relationship before, so I’m not sure how to do this. Is it too sudden to tell you all this now?”
He looked into my eyes earnestly, his gaze full of my reflection and twinkling like stars.
As if I was his whole world.
Sincerity is the ultimate weapon.
I nodded, my face red, “It is a bit sudden. We should date before meeting parents.”
Ethan nodded, “Then let’s go on a date now.”
I added, “…Well, you should confess first, and only after I accept can we go on a date.”
Ethan had a moment of realization, “Then let’s go eat first.”
It wasn’t until I was seated in the Western restaurant, looking at the roses and swan–shaped cake the waiter brought over, that I realized what was happening.
Didn’t this all start with me wanting to treat him to a meal because I got paid?
So why are we here now?
