“I’m telling you, Mr. Eric, you really…” She gave a bitter smile. “You really know how to pick your timing.”
Eric was speechless.
“You hadn’t shown up earlier on; someone targeted all their resentment on me.”
Eric wasn’t sure what to say.
He honestly had no idea what had happened.
Eric understood Alice was in a bad mood; he didn’t ask any questions.
He simply took the blame.
“How about I treat you to some good food today?” he said. “Consider it my apology.”
Alice looked surprised.
“Huh? Mr. Eric, since when are you this easygoing?”
Eric nodded, his expression serious.
“The doctor–patient relationship needs to be handled with care. After all, giving it your all and just doing the bare minimum are very different things.”
Alice paused a little. “So this is still about the doctor–patient relationship?”
“Isn’t that the relationship you care about the most?” Eric replied, sounding a little helpless.
He did want to define their bond in another way, but he worried Alice wouldn’t agree.
So far, all he knew was that Alice had something important she needed to do.
For example, dealing with Julius, but he didn’t know her true goal.
So, as a good patient, the best choice was to stay “not fully healed” and protect his doctor at all costs.
After all, if the doctor died, he wouldn’t have much of a chajice to survive either.
Alice walked toward the elevator with her head down.
Her mood sank even lower.
She felt like there was something stuck in her chest and couldn’t let it out. She really wanted to hit
someone.
The elevator doors opened.

Alice didn’t want to deal with her, but Linda had very thick skin and followed them anyway.

“I came with Damon, but now I can’t find him,” she said softly. “Could you give me a ride to go back to Mapleford?”
She spoke pitifully, her cheeks flushed, looking shy.
She leaned forward, almost throwing herself at Eric.
Eric quickly stepped back several feet, as if he had narrowly escaped danger.
Alice’s territorial instinct kicked in.
She stepped in front of Eric and spoke calmly.
“Are you a minor?”
Linda froze. “Huh?”
Alice asked again, “Can’t you buy a ticket with your ID?”
That question left Linda speechless.
Alice gave a short laugh. “Or do you have some terminal illness?”
Linda’s face fell. “If you don’t want to take me with you, just say so. Why humiliate me like this?”
Her eyes filled with tears as she looked at Eric.
“Eric, aren’t you going to say anything?”
Eric continued to wear a stone face; his voice was cold enough to freeze the air.
“My wife doesn’t have a sister.”
Linda was shocked. “What!”
His words hurt more than a blade stabbed to her heart.
“E–Eric…”
Her tears poured down her face. She looked utterly pitiful.

“Since you don’t want to go together,” she said stiffly, “I’ll figure it out on my own.”
She was ready to leave, but after only a few steps, she stopped and turned back.
“But Mr. Eric,” she said, forcing confidence into her voice, “no matter what, she is my sister. If you treat my Alice badly, I won’t let it go.”
With that, she spun around and ran off.
Alice and Eric looked at each other. Both saw the same confusion in the other’s eyes.
Was she out of her mind?
Linda rushed around the corner and slammed straight into someone.
“Watch it! Are you trying to get yourself killed?” A sharp voice snapped.
“Wait.”
Linda froze and looked up.
Standing in front of her was a young man. He wore a black suit with a red tie. A luxury watch gleamed on his wrist. He was not stunningly handsome, but his face was easy on the eyes. There was a brown mole on his chin. Instead of ruining his appearance, it made him seem a little more mature.
“I’m sorry,” Linda said quickly. “I wasn’t paying attention.”
Behind the man stood more than a dozen bodyguards. Their faces were hard and watchful, their presence heavy and intimidating.
Luckily, Linda was used to dealing with powerful people. She often spent time with her brothers, so she managed to stay calm.
