She forced an awkward smile. “T–This isn’t appropriate. It was my fault to begin with. I—” 

“It’s fine,” the man said easily. “If you really want to apologize, have a drink with me. I could use some company right now.” 

His tone was relaxed. It was as if he had pulled all his authority back and hidden it away. 

Linda’s heart stirred. 

She hadn’t expected to meet someone this impressive–someone other than Eric. 

“Then, I’m happy to comply,” she said softly. 

Eric took Alice to the bank. 

Alice didn’t know why he came here. She was ready to wait in the lounge. 

Surprisingly, the bank manager personally came out and led them straight to the vault. 

Alice was puzzled. “Huh?” 

Eric entered the password and security code and opened the top compartment of the safe. 

The manager carefully took out a painting. 

The painting was in several pieces, sealed in separate bags. To see the full image, they would need to put it together slowly. 

That wasn’t hard. 

What puzzled Alice was why Eric had come to retrieve it. 

After checking the item, the manager prepared to escort them out. 

But Eric put the painting back into the safe. 

He closed it again and left with nothing but an empty security case. 

Alice was curious about what the painting showed. 

But since Eric didn’t explain, she didn’t ask.

Eric had noticed it too. “Seems like I’ll need to stretch a bit today.”

Alice spoke seriously, “You’re a patient. Intense activity isn’t good for you. I recommend letting me handle it.” 

Eric smiled faintly. “From a patient’s point of view, the doctor doesn’t have to protect the patient for every second.” 

“Sorry,” Alice said, already on guard. “You’ve met a very responsible doctor.” 

If anyone made a move, they wouldn’t get away. 

Still, this was bank territory. No one would be foolish enough to cause a scene here. 

Alice patted Eric’s arm. 

“Looks like you’ll need to be the bait.” 

Eric fell silent. 

Why did it sound like she was enjoying this a little too much? 

“Doctor’s orders should be followed,” he said flatly. His face was calm, but there was helplessness in his eyes and a hint of affection he didn’t even notice himself. 

Alice led him toward a narrow side street. 

There was usually a street fair there. Lots of people. If someone wanted to steal something, this was a perfect place. 

Once they get the job done, they could blend into the crowd and flee the scene. 

They walked over to the street fair. 

Alice had long lost interest in street fair. Back when she lived in the mountains, she went to them all the time to buy supplies. 

Eric, on the other hand, rarely experienced this kind of everyday bustle. 

He looked like a curious kid.

Alice glanced at their clothes and behavior. 

They looked like local street thugs.

His tone was polite, like he was trying to negotiate.

Alice was tongue–tied. This man was more flexible than she expected. 

She thought he only knew how to keep a cold face. 

Still, given Eric’s background, he should have had an elite education.
