Rowan chuckled softly. “Don’t feel bad. I’ll take you to get something to eat.” 

Linda instantly smiled through her tears. 

“I know a great live–music restaurant in Mapleford. Mr. Burke, do you want to try it?” 

“OK,” Rowan said easily. 

Gracie walked out behind them. 

She had dropped a pile of work in Torenridge to come to Mapleford for one reason–Alice. 

Alice reminded her too much of the Patron. She could not afford to miss any clue. 

She also happened to be starting a small project in Mapleford, so she planned to observe things up 

close. 

She did not expect to end up right behind Linda and Rowan, watching them flirt. 

Gracie gave Rowan a strange look. 

Why was this guy suddenly interested in a sweet, innocent type of girl? 

Did he hit his head or something? 

Rowan looked like he was in a good mood. Gracie decided it 

was better not to ruin it.

Inside the car, Alice watched Daniel finish loading the luggage, then smiled. 

“The things inside the case are probably gone.” 

Eric had already guessed that. 

Alice asked again, “The person who bumped into me earlier, are we watching him?” 

Eric nodded. “There are no random coincidences. Daniel already sent someone to follow him.” 

Alice trusted his careful way of doing things. 

“Good. Let me know when there’s news.”

Just then, her phone rang. It was Janice. “Ms. Spencer, they’re really going too far,” Janice said angrily. 

“They’re clearly firing me, but they refuse to give any severance pay.” 

According to labor law, if an employee is dismissed, the company must pay three months of salary as compensation and provide a termination letter. 

Janice had complained about it on the phone before. 

Over the last two days, she had stopped working there and went to help Alice with the new company instead. 

Still, she needed the papers from Nolan Group. 

So, she went to Human Resources. 

In the end, HR canceled the promised severance and refused to give her the paper.

The HR manager, Davy Estrada, sneered. 

“She really thinks she’s someone important. How embarrassing.”

“Exactly. She worked with Mrs. Nolan for two days and thinks she’s on top of the world. 

“She even said she’d call the police. Like the police care about labor disputes. They’ll just tell her to take 

this to court.”

Janice hadn’t expected things to be so complicated. She grew more upset by the second, tears falling nonstop.

Janice had come as a representative for the others. 

But now, it seemed she was going to let everyone down. 

After taking statements and giving a brief case assessment, the police asked them to sign the report. Then they left. 

Davy looked at Janice with open disdain. 

“Janice, I know why you came today,” he said coldly. 

“You wanted to stand up for those friends of yours, right?” 

He sneered. “Let me tell you something. Playing the hero never ends well. 

“Today, I was being kind. I wanted you to see your place clearly. 

“You’re a smart person. You should understand your situation by now. 

“Even if you call the police, even if you have evidence, you can’t drag this out with me.” 

Janice’s tears kept falling, no matter how hard she tried to stop them. 

She and her friends all depended on their jobs to support themselves or their families. 

Missing one month of work could already put them in financial hardship.
