In recent years, most of the Lawrence family business had been handled by Kayla. 

Eliza spent her time in the entertainment industry. 

Rumor had it she was filming a period drama, playing the role of eye candy. 

Melinda’s youngest son was nineteen this year and had just been admitted to Riverview University as an undergraduate. 

Lately, Melinda talked about him nonstop, saying she planned to leave the business to him in the future. 

But with Kayla holding all the real power at home, Melinda, as his mother, had very little say. 

After reviewing the situation, Kayla decided not to work with Nolan Group. 

In fact, after being publicly embarrassed by Risa last time, Kayla began to seriously rethink her relationship with Sandy.

“Mrs. Lawrence, backing out at the last minute like this,” Ruby said coolly, “isn’t that a little unfair?” 

Melinda sounded awkward. 

“You know how it is. I’m just a figurehead. I have to listen to my daughter on everything. Ms. Randall, I hope you can understand.” 

With that, she hung up, leaving Ruby no chance to respond. 

Ruby gripped her phone, her face flushed with anger. 

Michael happened to walk out of the office just then. Seeing her expression, he thought he had done something wrong. Startled, he quietly shrank back. 

Ruby was lost in her thoughts and did not notice him at first. 

When she pushed the door open again and saw him sitting on the couch, reading documents, she was surprised. 

After the surprise came a bit of relief. 

At least her son was willing to work hard now; that meant there was still hope for him. 

As for the Lawrences… 

She gave a quiet, humorless smile. 

Another name crossed her mind. 

Moments later, Ruby stepped out of the office and dialed Rosalie’s number. 

Rosalie had been in Mapleford for many days, but she hadn’t dare to see Stella and Ruby. 

All she could do was stay in her hotel room and wait for news.

Freddie had been urging her to go home, but what Rosalie wanted wasn’t just to see her daughter. 

Even though she was anxious, she forced herself to endure it. 

She wanted to see Alice, but she had no way in.

Now, when Ruby’s call finally came, Rosalie’s heart raced.

She took a deep breath and slowly pressed the answer button. 

“Ms. Randall,” Ruby said calmly. “Do you have time to talk now?” 

Ruby didn’t want to see Rosalie, but her tone showed no displeasure. 

“I just want to let you know,” Ruby continued, “Mrs. Lawrence wants to get off the ship. Handle this.” 

Rosalie’s heart dropped suddenly. 

Ruby’s reminder was like pouring salt on an open wound. 

‘You may be resting in your hotel,” Ruby said lightly, “but everyone in Mapleford is watching you.” 

‘Mrs. Previn,” she added, “you’re a smart woman. I don’t need to explain more, do I?” 

Rosalie’s hand trembled as she gripped her phone. 

Her eyes burned with barely hidden hatred. 

‘I understand,” she said slowly. “Even though you’re using me as a tool, I have no choice but to follow your lead.” 

Ruby laughed softly.
