“I know you’re busy,” Alice said calmly. “With how busy you are, I didn’t want to bother you.” 

Byron looked awkward. “Didn’t I say so already? Nothing is more important than you.” 

Alice waved her hand, making it clear she didn’t want that responsibility. 

“I’m here to see Emma.” 

Byron paused for a moment.

He truly valued Emma’s ability. He also knew his son had feelings for her, so he had quietly allowed Clayton to pursue her. 

What surprised him was that Emma was not trying to cling to their family at all. Instead, she kept a clear distance from Clayton.

He had warned his son more than once to treat her sincerely and never toy with her feelings. 

Recently, anything Emma wanted to do received his priority approval. 

He also knew she was recruiting members for a student organization. 

To support her, he had invited several well–known experts from the industry to attend. 

To avoid gossip, he didn’t show up himself. 

He planned to let Clayton take the credit. 

What he didn’t expect was that Alice had come in person. 

In that case, he definitely had to go and take a look. 

“Then I’ll go with you,” Byron said quickly. “There’s an event today anyway. I want to see how Emma’s doing.” 

Seeing how eager he was, Alice gave him a knowing smile. 

“Sure,” she said. 

“As long as you don’t regret it.” 

Those professors exchanged looks. 

“Mr. Reese,” one of them said, “we haven’t decided on the research project yet.” 

Byron instantly felt that his professors had no sense of timing. 

Didn’t they see that an important guest was here? 

And yet they were dragging his feet. 

“I already told you I’ll think about it,” Byron snapped. “What, you don’t trust me?”

Those professors immediately wore expressions that looked painfully forced. 

“Mr. Reese,” one of them muttered, “how many times have you said that before?” 

Byron fell silent. 

The university needed money. A lot of money. 

Most of it had to be shared evenly. 

The ideals were grand, but reality was harsh. 

Many projects were urgent, and he could only prioritize the most pressing ones. 

People weren’t afraid of having little. They were afraid of things being unfair. 

That was why so many professors were unhappy. 

If he put it nicely, he was holding a meeting. If he was being honest, it was a group coming to settle accounts with him. 

Byron suddenly felt like crying. 

There was no money. None at all. 

In desperation, he turned and looked at Alice for help. 

Alice almost laughed out of anger.

‘Mr. Reese,” she said calmly, “are you really doing things this openly now?”

He spoke in circles, afraid that one wrong word might offend her. 

‘Alright,” Alice continued. “I understand. I’ll make sure you’re happy.”

‘Ms. Spencer, I knew you were reliable,” he said excitedly. 

Then he turned to the professors, who were watching eagerly. 

“Go back and wait for news,” Byron said. “At most, I’ll release the funds within three days.” 

Those professors still didn’t believe him. 

Mainly because Byron had said things like this many times before. 

The story of the boy who cried wolf had played out too often. 

At this point, Byron had no credibility left.

“If she can really get that much investment, I’ll eat dirt standing on my head.” 

“Exactly,” someone sneered. “She’s just a bumpkin. Marrying into the Nolan Group is already impressive. Getting money out of it? That’s a fantasy.” 

Alice looked at them and found it amusing. 

She hadn’t expected that even in modern times, people still judged others by their status before their ability. 

“What exactly are they trying to research?” Alice asked. 

“A catalyst,” Byron replied. 

It wasn’t his field, so his explanation was vague. 

But overall, it sounded like a decent project. If successful, it might even qualify for government funding. 

After listening, Alice frowned, 

“Even if I invest,” she said, “I won’t waste money on a project that has no chance of success.” 

The professors immediately turned red with anger. 

“Do you even know what you’re saying?” One of them snapped. 

Alice smiled slightly and repeated herself, serious and calm. 

“I’m saying the project you want to apply for cannot succeed.” 

The professor was old, but his temper was still fierce. After being mocked like that, he even looked like he wanted to hit her. 

Alice gave a cold laugh. 

“If the future is really that promising,” she said, “then why are you broke because of this project?” 

“Mrs. Nolan,” the professor said sharply, “don’t think I won’t sue you just because you work at Nolan Group.”
