“We need to report to the General,” the director said. 

Alice didn’t stop him. 

“He will definitely help,” she replied calmly. “But tell him I don’t need his help.” 

The director fell silent. 

That was a bold thing to say. Damn bold. 

But deep down, he knew Alice wasn’t bragging.

The doctors told the family to prepare for the worst. 

Linda broke down and cried uncontrollably. 

Maria, however, felt only irritation. 

“I’m not dead yet!”

“Where is your father?” Maria asked. 

She knew she wasn’t going to make it. She needed to find Nathan and hand over all her past research data to her husband. 

But no one knew where Nathan was. 

Gary leaned closer and coaxed her softly. 

“Dad went out earlier today. He just received the news. He’s on his way back.” 

Maria snickered. 

She knew her husband too well. 

If he wasn’t here, Nathan was probably busy testing his new drugs on some innocent girls. 

He was enjoying himself. Why would he rush to the hospital and deal with this mess? 

“You five …” 

At the very end, Maria finally understood the meaning of blood ties. 

Because they were related by blood, her five children stayed by her side. They would mourn her. They would carry on her name. 

But because she and Nathan shared no blood, he couldn’t even show up when she was dying.

Maria sneered at the thought of Linda. 

As a woman who had clawed her way up from nothing, she understood people like Linda very well. 

No matter how many years Linda had lived with them, she could never get rid of that small–minded, insecure nature. 

She wasn’t like Alice.

When Maria thought of Alice, regret filled her chest. 

She admitted it. She used to hate Alice. Alice was too capable. Too powerful. Too hard to control. 

Maria hated anything she couldn’t control. 

But now that she knew she was dying, she regretted it. 

She should have treated Alice better. 

Out of all the children, only Alice truly inherits her abilities. 

From now on, all her research could only go to Alice.

Gary didn’t know what to say. His heart was heavy. 

The last time all the children gathered in a hospital, it was to scheme against Alice.

“All of you must live a good life,” Maria said weakly. “Everything I left for you is in the safe on the second floor of the villa. I’ve already written my will. Go read it. As for your father, don’t wait for him.” 

After a short silence, Maria suddenly spoke again. 

“I want to see Alice.” 

Everyone was stunned. 

No one expected that the person Maria hated the most… was the one she missed the most at the end. 

Gary’s eyes instantly turned red. 

“Okay,” he said hoarsely. “I’ll have someone to get her here.” 

Maria was afraid Alice might refuse to come. 

According to what she knew, Alice had suffered while living with the Spencers. 

It would be normal for her not to want anything to do with them. 

Just in case, Maria called Gary closer.

Gary knelt beside the bed as she whispered a few words to him. 

When she finished, all her strength seemed to drain away. Her breathing grew shallow and deliberate. 

Linda stood there, stunned.

She had rushed all the way here and planned everything carefully. Now, it felt like none of this had anything to do with her. 

“Mommy!” 

She cried as she crawled to the bedside and grabbed Maria’s hand, “Mommy, don’t worry. Dad will be here soon. He will. I promise.” 

That was the wrong thing to say. The moment Maria heard it, painful memories flooded back. 

Hatred filled her eyes. 

“Get out!” 

She used the last of her strength to drive Linda away. 

Gary sighed. “Linda, go outside and wait.” 

Of course Linda didn’t want to. 

Scott stepped forward and grabbed her arm. “Go out. Don’t disturb Mom.” 

Linda tried to fight back, but she was no match for Scott. He dragged her outside. 

Scott threw her out and turned to leave. 

But the next second, Linda wrapped her arms around his legs, crying. 

“Scott, are you really going to abandon me?” 

Scott closed his eyes. 

After so many years together, they had feelings for each other. 

“The last time I came to the hospital,” he said slowly, “was because of you.” 

That time, it was to force Alice into a substitute marriage. 

“Now, I’m making up for my mistake. I’m paying it back. Consider it atonement for you.” 

With that, he shook her off and walked back toward the ward. 

His steps were fast, as if he was afraid she might cling to him again. 

Linda tried to chase after him, but reporters suddenly rushed over. 

She was afraid of embarrassment. Even more afraid that Rowan would look down on her if he saw this. So, she straightened her back, wiped her tears, and slowly walked out of the hospital.
