The words shattered the last of Alice’s restraint. She shot to her feet. 

“You really are connected to my mentor! How come?” 

He knew Eugenia. 

He had even adopted Samson, the child abandoned by the Sarratts. 

Was he part of the Sarratts as well? 

But that made no sense. 

The Sarratts had delved into forbidden, esoteric studies–acts that stirred public outrage. 

Julius, in contrast, had devoted his life to serving his country and its people. 

“Eugenia, come out here–your girl’s about to cry herself sick.” 

Alice froze. 

She’d called her mentor earlier and told her to go abroad for a while to recuperate. 

Had Eugenia never actually left? 

Alice turned toward the side door.

The first time she’d come here, she’d thought the layout felt odd.

It made the whole place feel cramped and strangely off.
