His words were beyond laughable.Â
Was he truly here, the man who’d conspired with Chloe to destroy my entire family, just to chase me down and spew such sickeningÂ
words?Â
Absolute fury, I was discovering, could actually make you laugh.Â
My brows drew together, a tight knot of disbelief and disgust. My gaze, when it landed on Lucas, was raw with revulsion. I hated the thought of wasting another breath on him, but I needed him to feel my loathing.Â
“Let go,Â
,” I bit out, the words laced with ice. “Get away from me. I don’t want to see your face.”Â
Lucas, however, seemed to think this was just another one of my dramatic moods. He opened his mouth, clearly ready to try and placateÂ
- me.Â
Evan shoved Lucas away, positioning himself between us. His voice was a low, stern warning: “Mr. Thorne, I know you. You might be a powerful man back in China, but this isn’t China. If you harass Anna again, I’ll call the local police, and they’ll have a much longer talk with you.”Â
“Anna.”Â
And this stranger, he dared to call me by my first name. So intimately.Â
Lucas glared at Evan, his eyes blazing with unconcealed jealousy and contempt. He snarled, “I’m talking to my wife. Who the hell are you to butt in?Â
“Wife?” Evan scoffed, taking a deliberate step closer to Lucas. He spoke slowly, each word cutting: “As far as I know, Anna alreadyÂ
servedÂ
divorce papers.Â
You’re the one who’s been refusing to sign them. She doesn’t want you.”Â
youÂ
The words hit Lucas like a punch, igniting a fury that snapped his control. His fist balled, already arcing towards Evan’s face.Â
But I caught Lucas’s intent. I darted in front of Evan, tilting my chin up as I challenged Lucas directly. “Is violence your only answer? Anyone who dares to speak the truth is either silenced forever or crushed by your cruelty. Do you think your tyranny will be tolerated, here or anywhere else?”Â
Lucas’s raised arm dropped, useless. My words slammed into him, and a suffocating agony seized his chest. “No,” he choked out, “it’sÂ
not like that.”Â
as husbandÂ
Lucas’s brow furrowed, still attempting to salvage our broken connection. “I know I made so many mistakes in the past, but that’s all behind us now. I’ve realized my errors. Please, just give me one chance to make it right. For the sake of the years we spent and wife, just one chance. Please?”Â
History.Â
Lucas’s invocation of ‘history‘ ignited a fresh blaze of fury in my heart.Â
A cold laugh escaped my lips as I sized Lucas up, my gaze sweeping over him as if he were a piece of vermin. “Lucas,” I challenged, “you honestly believe you have the right to speak to me of ‘marital ties?”Â
