Chapter 15

When Adrian arrived at Evelyn’s estate, the villa was already desertedempty, silent, untouched since the night before.

Only her assistant, Amy, stood by the doorway.

You’re too late,Amy said flatly, arms crossed. They left after the wedding last night, Some private coastal destination down south. No return date

set.”

Adrian’s brows furrowed tightly. Do you know where exactly?”

Amy gave a cold laugh, her expression unreadable but tinged with contempt.

Mr. Whitmore, pleasegive it up. When Evelyn still cared about you, you barely looked her way. Now that she belongs to someone else, suddenly you regret it and come chasing after her? Do you even hear yourself?”

Adrian’s face darkened, and his voice dropped a few degrees colder.

Evelyn wasn’t completely innocent either. She was always hostile toward Lillian. That’s why I distanced myself from her. But now I’ve realized she was the one I truly loved. I’m willing to forgive her-”

Forgive?”

Amy cut in, tone razorsharp as she laughed outright.

How generous. Adrian, you’ve been told time and againEvelyn would never harm Lillian. But you chose not to believe. If you’re so sure, why don’t you investigate the truth for yourself?”

She pulled a sealed envelope from behind her back and handed it to him with a flat expression.

She knew you’d come. This letter is for you. Now leave. I have nothing more to say.”

The door slammed shut before he could reply. The letter trembled in his handshis last thread of hope.

He tore it open.

Adrian,

In the last life, I gave you everything. I was even willing to spend the rest of my days alone for your sake. But you chose to fake your death and run away with Lillian.

This time, I gave you exactly what you wanted,

When you asked me for medicine, you owed me a request. Now I’ve thought about it, and that is: I hope we’ll never see each other again.

-Evelyn

The letter was brief. Cold. Each word a blade of ice that sliced straight to the bone.

The handwriting was elegant, composedemotionless. And yet it landed like a crushing weight in his chest.

She had been reborn too.

The revelation hit like a punch to the gut.

Adrian staggered back, barely able to breathe,

He spun and bolted home, frantically chasing ghosts he should’ve faced long ago.

He hunted down the doctor who once claimed Lillian had been poisoned.

Under threats and bribes, the truth spilled outit was all a performance. Lillian had paid him to stage it.

Next, he tracked down a witness from Evelyn’s fall into the lake. They confirmed what he dreaded to hearLillian had pushed Evelyn herself

The socalled assassination attempt? Faked. Lillian’s own orchestration to elicit his protection and pity.

Each truth unearthed turned his blood colder.

He remembered Evelyn begging him to believe her.

She had pleaded again and again that she would never do such things.

But his heart had been too wrapped around Lillian, convinced Evelyn’s words were manipulation, that she was just fighting dirty to win hire over.

And when she finally stopped tryingwhen the light in her eyes toward him slowly diedhe hadn’t even noticed.

Now it was too late.

He returned home like a man possessed.

Lillian greeted him in a sheer nightgown, waiting in anticipation.

The moment he stepped inside, she rushed into his arms.

Darling, I knew you couldn’t stay away. Let’s not fight anymore. Please don’t go looking for Evelyn again, okay? We belong together.”

Her voice was soft and laced with tears, her expression demure and pitiful.

Adrian looked down at herat the woman who had spun lies like silk around his lifeand felt nothing but disgust.

His palm cracked across her face before she could react.

His voice dropped, icy and sharp as steel.

You lied to me. You were never sick. You pushed Evelyn into that lake. You played me, manipulated everything. You’re poison, Lillian. You don’t deserve to be anyone’s bride.”

He stared at her with nothing but contempt in his eyes.
