The lights were bright in the living room. The crystal chandelier overhead lit up every corner, leaving no shadow untouched. Vivian walked in and made a beeline for Shepard. 

She said, “Shep, I just couldn’t stay away. Are you mad at me?” She stood right next to Shepard, wanting to hold his hand bu not quite daring to, her movements hesitant and her eyes full of vulnerability. 

Vivian bit her lip. “I know I shouldn’t have come, and I get that you have your reasons. But I had my hopes up, and then out of nowhere I found out you’re not getting divorced. Of course, I upset. It really hurts. 

“Waiting for your divorce to be final felt like years to me. Every single day felt endless. I thought I was finally about to see the end of it, but now it’s back to square one. I just can’t accept it.” 

With a flat look, Shepard said, “Just go back for now.” 

Vivian said softly, “I’m not here to argue or cause drama. I just wanted to see you. You hardly ever come to see me anymore, and we barely talk like we used to. I just feel like I’m losing you, Shep. 

“Even if you’re not getting divorced, I get it, and I’ll respect your choice. But shouldn’t things between us stay the same? Isn’t that right?” 

Vivian could feel Shepard’s love fading away, and there was no doubt about it. That was her biggest worry. The difference between being loved and not being loved was painfully obvious. 

Because the only thing she had to hold onto was Shepard’s love. If he stopped loving me, what would I do? What would happen to my family and Fletcher Group?” 

Shepard just repeated himself, “Vivian, just go back.” 

Briana was just here for the gossip, but after hearing their conversation, her jaw practically hit the floor. 

Wait, is Vivian really this weak in front of Shepard? I always figure Vivian’s the type to act all high and mighty just because she’s favored. I thought she’d be spoiled and act as if nothing could touch her 

Briana was surprised. “Hold up. Vivian, what are you saying right now? Can’t you show some backbone? Shepard promised he’d divorce and marry you, and now he’s backing out. You’re just gonna let him walk all over you?” 

Vivian glared at Briana, her eyes full of loathing and hate. This Briana is the one thing keeping me from becoming Mrs. Carter, Vivian fumed inwardly. 

Vivian clenched her jaw and snapped, “Briana, what tricks did you pull to keep Shep from divorcing? Did you make a scene? Weren’t you always talking about starting fresh? So, why are you messing things up again now?” 

“So, now it’s my fault Shep won’t divorce?” Briana pointed at herself. “Let me spell it out for you, Vivian. I want a divorce. If I could walk out right this second, I would.” 

Vivian frowned. ‘If Briana’s so dead set on getting divorced, then why is Shep suddenly getting cold feet? What the hell happened? 

‘Did he just realize he’s still in love with Briana? Is my worst nightmare actually coming true?‘ Panic rising in her chest, and she felt a chill running down her spine. 

Briana sighed. “I messaged you because I wanted you to stir things up, to make a scene. Seriously, step up your game! If you want to take my spot, you can’t just keep letting Shepard walk all over you. 

“Aren’t you supposed to be the queen of scheming? So, why can’t you pull your usual moves on Shepard?” Briana was practically tearing her hair out in frustration at Vivian.

Where is that firestarter energy Vivian had when she set everything ablaze? Come on, bring it out! She wanted to shout. 

Vivian glared at her. “You’re just trying to stir up a huge fight between Shep and me, so you can sneak in and cozy up to him, aren’t you? Dream on. Briana. I’m not letting you win!” 

Briana just stared, completely speechless. 

Vivian said, sounding sure of herself. “Shep and I always talk things through, no drama between us. I know he loves me, an he’s always kept his word to me. It’s only because you keep interfering that he can’t follow through right now.” 

“Me? Interfering?” Briana was so done she couldn’t even finish her sentence. She rolled her eyes so hard she thought they might get stuck. 

Then she turned away. “Whatever, believe what you want. I’m leaving. There, you’ve got the place all to yourselves. Satisfied?” 

Briana stomped upstairs, her footsteps echoing through the Carter Estate. Back in her room, with the door slammed shut, she instantly video–called Olivia. She had a whole rant ready, and Olivia was the only one she could really unload on. 

Olivia said, “Hey, babe, what’s up? Wait, hold on. Where are you? That background looks really familiar.” 

“Carter Estate,” Briana replied. 

“Wait, what are you doing at the Carter Estate?” Olivia blurted out, totally caught off guard. 

“I’ll fill you in when we meet up. Olivia, Vivian is literally downstairs with Shepard right now.” Briana said, sprawling out on the bed. 

Olivia shrieked, “Oh my god! What?” 

Briana blinked, a bit confused. “Why are you getting so worked up?” 

“This is your chance, Briana. Go grab it!” Olivia exclaimed, her voice full of excitement. 

“Huh? What chance?” Briana blinked, totally lost. She just didn’t get what Olivia meant at all. 

“You’re by yourself, right? Is it safe to talk?” Olivia’s voice dropped to a whisper. 

“Yeah, it’s safe. I’m in my room, they’re all downstairs,” Briana replied. 

Olivia cleared her throat and said, “Alright. Don’t worry about what Shepard and Vivian are doing downstairs. That’s not your problem, and it doesn’t matter. You need to keep your eyes on the goal and do what you came here to do. 

“Briana, Vivian’s already covered her tracks. There’s no way we’ll find any evidence or clues about the fire. The only shot we’ve got now is Vivian herself. 

“She’s right here at the Carter Estate. Go talk to her. Try to get her to slip up. And don’t forget to record everything. You never know, she might just blurt out the proof we need. 

“Don’t let your feelings mess with your head. The truth is what matters most. Get the evidence, throw it in Vivian’s face, and watch all her plans fall apart. 

“Make Shepard regret it so much he can’t sleep at night. This isn’t the time for romance or self–pity. Briana, Shepard’s just a terrible husband.” 

Olivia was worried Briana might still be hung up on Shepard, letting her feelings cloud her judgment and making her jealous and impulsive. So, she kept reminding her, just to make sure.

Briana said, “Now’s really not the time to get all hung up on feels. Relax, I get it. I’m on it. Going in right now.” 

Olivia shot her a pleased grin. “That’s what I want to hear. Now, it’s brainstorm how to get Vivian to spill. She’s a tough nut to crack” 

Half an hour later, Briana and Olivia finished plotting. Briana headed downstairs. Shepard was nowhere to be seen, and Vivian was sitting alone on the living room couch. 

Briana said, her tone dripping with sarcasm, “Well, well, look who’s still here. Couldn’t talk Shep into divorcing, huh? So, what are you still hanging around for? Where’s Shepard, anyway She looked around, scanning the room.
