‘Let time do its thing,‘ they thought. ‘I’m sure good news will come soon!‘Â

Briana saw everyone off, being polite and gracious the whole time. It wasn’t until everyone had left that she finally let out a sigh of relief.Â
“Next time, you have to wake me up,” she muttered. “It makes me look so rude.”Â
“Okay,” Shepard replied.Â
“You always say ‘okay,‘ but you never actually listen to me,” Briana grumbled.Â
Shepard asked, “When have I ever not listened to you?”Â
Everyone knew Shepard was totally whipped by his wife. He would do everything Briana told him to do.Â
Briana was at a loss for words and just let out a huff.Â
“I’m heading to the gallery,” Briana said. “There’s a new exhibition opening tomorrow morning, and I need to check things out in person today.”Â
“I’ll drive you,” Shepard offered.Â
“You should go to the Carter Group,” Briana replied. “Don’t let me hold you up.”Â
Shepard pursed his lips, a little reluctant. “So you really don’t want me to drive you?”Â
“Honestly, I just don’t want to waste your time,” Briana said with a smile. “You’ve been glued to me these past few days. Your work must be piling up.”Â
Shepard nodded, finally letting it go.Â
Briana drove herself to the gallery.Â
Shepard watched as Briana left Evergreen Estate, then got into his Maybach.Â
The Carter Group and the gallery were located in opposite directions.Â
Briana was so familiar with the route that she could drive it with her eyes closed. She’d taken this road so many times. It felt like home.Â
She put on some music, humming along to the tune as she drove, completely relaxed.Â
The weather was perfect with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Briana felt even more cheerful. It felt like every day was full of hope, and the future was wideÂ
open.Â
Her belly was getting bigger by the day.Â
The gallery’s reputation was spreading far and wide.Â
Briana’s paintings were selling for high prices, and people were eagerly waiting for her next masterpiece.Â
And her relationship with Shepard was becoming more and more stable.Â

This was probably the life Briana truly wanted.Â

After everything she’d been through, all the ups and downs, she finally realized what she could have, and what she lovedÂ
most.Â
Briana was passing through an intersection.Â
The light was red.Â
Briana gently pressed the brakes and came to a stop.Â
She snapped a photo of the sky and sent it to Shepard.Â
Briana texted: [The clouds look amazing today.]Â
Briana wanted to share every little thing with him, just to let him in on her day.Â
But Briana didn’t have time to wait for his reply. The light turned green.Â
She was just a couple of seconds slow to start, and the car behind her honked impatiently.Â
Briana quickly put her phone down. She was about to turn left. She signaled, then drove smoothly and steadily down the road. Everything seemed normal.Â
Briana thought to herself, ‘I’ll check Shepard’s reply when I hit the next red light.’Â
Out of nowhere, disaster struck.Â
Briana’s car was right in the middle of the intersection. She hadn’t even finished turning left onto the next road.Â
Just then, a massive truck came charging out of nowhere, heading straight for her. By the time Briana spotted the truck, it was already too late.Â
Her tiny car looked utterly insignificant next to that giant semi–truck. It was like the truck was about to swallow her whole, car and all.Â
Briana yanked the steering wheel, desperate to dodge, and slammed the gas pedal down, thinking, ‘Faster!‘Â
She had to get away from that truck! Her car veered sharply. But the truck seemed locked onto her, chasing her every move, sticking to her like glue. She just couldn’t shake it!Â
Briana’s face went very pale. She thought, ‘Am I really just supposed to accept this?‘Â
Just a second ago, she was planning her future, thinking about the man she loved. And now, she was about to say goodbye to the world?Â
‘No! Briana screamed in her head. Her eyes went wide as she stared at the truck barreling straight toward her. She was utterly desperate. She’d done everything she could, but nothing changed.Â
Briana instinctively hunched over, shielding her belly. Maybe, with a crash this violent, this instinctive move could save her and her baby.Â
A massive crash rang out. Briana was slammed by the impact, her car hurtling forward uncontrollably. The airbag burstÂ
open.Â
The seatbelt held her tight, keeping her locked in place so she wouldn’t be thrown out.Â

The car skidded for what felt like an eternity, finally slamming into a streetlight pole before coming to a halt.Â

Briana felt like she was trapped inside a ball, tossed around and shaken violently. Finally, with another loud bang, the car stopped moving. Everything went dead silent.Â
Briana huddled in her seat, curled up protectively. Slowly, she raised her head.Â
Everything was washed out in white. The car was smashed to bits, parts strewn everywhere, and strange steam or smoke was rising from the wreck.Â
Gradually, Briana realized it wasn’t that everything was silent. It was that her hearing was gone. Her ears just couldn’t pick up any sound.Â
The crash had left her eardrums numb, stunned by the sheer volume. She gulped a few times and shook her head, finally managing to catch the faintest hint of noise.Â
Someone was banging on the car door and hammering at the window! She peeked over at them.Â
Several people were clustered around the driver’s side, yelling urgently, their faces full of panic.Â
Briana could barely make out words. “Get out.”Â
‘Oh, right! Get out!‘ Briana thought. ‘It’s dangerous in here. I need to get out!‘Â
Her hands shaking uncontrollably, she reached for the door handle. But the car was so badly wrecked that the door wouldn’t budge.Â
Her hands were trembling so hard. After all, she’d just cheated death.Â
Briana was still in shock, her mind a total blank. She couldn’t think of anything at all.Â
With the help of some bystanders, they finally managed to get the door off.Â
Several hands reached in, pulling Briana out of the wreck.Â
The moment she stood on solid ground, her legs felt like jelly. She couldn’t help it. Her knees gave out, and she dropped to the ground.Â
“Easy!” someone called out.Â
“Poor girl, you must be scared out of your mind,” another person said.Â
“Man, you’re really lucky, barely a scratch on you,” someone else remarked.Â
“Looks like just a few scrapes,” another voice chimed in.Â
“But that car is a mess. I doubt anyone in there made it,” someone said grimly.Â
“If it weren’t for that truck, there’s no way this girl would’ve survived,” another person added.Â
At first, Briana could hear them talking, but their words just didn’t make any sense to her.Â
About thirty seconds later, she suddenly realized what they meant.Â
“That car?‘ Briana wondered, still dazed. ‘Which one? What did they mean? Was there another car that got hit by the truck, besides mine?‘Â

Briana turned her head, but with so many people crowding around, she couldn’t see anything at all.Â

Bracing herself, Briana straightened up and shoved her way through the crowd, desperate to see the intersection.Â
Her eyes landed on a scene that. Her heart nearly stopped. The truck had flipped over, pinning a black Maybach underneath it. The Maybach was almost completely crushed.Â
Just one look, and Briana knew instantly that it was Shepard’s car!Â
‘Oh my God!‘ Briana’s mind went blank. ‘Why? Why him? Why is he here?‘Â
