Chapter 29 My Mother Could Never Have Given Birth to a Mistress

Tracy looked coldly at Yvonne. “Don’t call me that. My mother could never have given birth to someone like you, throwing yourself at other people’s husbands to be a mistress.”

Because of what her own mother had suffered, Tracy had hated mistresses since childhood. And yet, her own marriage had been ruined by one.

And not just any mistress-the daughter of the very woman she had hated for so many years. The irony was almost too much to bear.

Mother and daughter alike-both the sort who knowingly crawled into the role of a mistress, trying to shove aside the rightful wife, while on the surface playing the part of the pitiful

victim.

She was sick of it.

But Yvonne didn’t get angry at the insult. “Tracy, I know you’re still upset with us, but you c insult me like that.”

Tracy’s lips curved in a mocking smile. “Yvonne, drop the fake act. You play the role of the shameless mistress, yet you put on the face of a victim. Don’t forget-mistresses aren’t protected by law. If I really wanted to go after you, do you think you’d get away?”

When she had first discovered that Chandler’s affair was with Yvonne, Tracy had indeed thought about exposing them, destroying their reputations.

But she hadn’t. She’d been afraid that if she blew it all up, Chandler’s reputation would be ruined too. So instead, she had chosen to monitor his schedule, to hover around him.

She had been so good to Chandler, pouring herself into trying to win his love back.

Too naïve.

Now, she thought, let the cheater and the mistress rot together. She had work to do and a life to live.

Yvonne’s expression shifted, though she still feigned innocence. “Tracy, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Tracy shoved her aside and walked straight toward the private room. “Move. You’re in my way.”

Yvonne froze. Why was Tracy walking into Morten’s private room? Was she… a waitress here?

The thought made her lower her head in disgust. She pulled a wet wipe from her bag and scrubbed the hand Tracy had brushed against.

She had come today to formally ask Morten to take her as a student. But after he had asked her a string of professional questions that she struggled to answer, he had shaken his head. He told her her foundation was weak, gave her a few curt suggestions, and rejected her request.

She had arrived full of confidence, certain she was prepared. But in front of Morten, she had fallen short.

And she-who was praised everywhere else as a prodigy, a doctorate before her peers, the darling of scholarships and awards-had felt clumsy and inadequate in front of him and his

students.

She was the Xander family’s pride. But here, among these people, she had been exposed as mediocre.

Jared had told her that Morten was a national-level researcher, the kind whose students all went on to work in state institutes. Few outside the field knew who he really was, but Yvonn had found her way to him to beg to be accepted.

Instead, she had been dismissed outright. But she would not give up so easily. When she went back, she would study harder, patch her weaknesses, and return stronger.

Inside the room, Tracy sat down again. Sam quietly filled her in on what had just happened. Only then did she realize what Yvonne had come for.

A mocking smile tugged at her lips. Yvonne, trying to become Morten’s disciple? Did she even know her own worth? Did she really think the whole world had to revolve around her?

Not long after, the mysterious senior finally arrived. When Tracy saw the cold, sharp features of his face, she froze.

It really was Sean.

The world was small indeed.

Morten stood up with a smile to introduce him. “This is the one you’ve all heard so much. about-your genius senior, Sean.”

Everyone in the room was younger than Sean. They rose quickly and greeted him politely. “Mr. Sean, it’s an honor. We’ve heard so much about you.”

Sean gave a slight nod in acknowledgment.

His gaze drifted, light but unmistakable, landing on Tracy-still frozen in her seat.

She hurried to force a smile. “Sean.”

“Mm.” Sean answered simply, then took the seat right beside her.

Morten glanced between them. “You two know each other?”

“Known each other for years.”

“Don’t know him.”

Tracy looked sideways at Sean, only to find him looking right back at her. Their eyes met for a brief, jarring moment before she quickly lowered hers.

She hadn’t expected him to openly admit they knew each other. It left her flustered and unsure what to do.

Sean’s eyes lingered on her, sharp and probing, as if he could see straight through her. “Hm

So the little girl was pretending not to know him now? Heartless.

The others’ eyes flicked between them, their curiosity piqued. So what was it-did they know each other or not?

Tracy twisted her hands in her lap, forcing herself to speak. “A few years ago I asked him for help with some questions. I didn’t know back then that he was also one of Teacher’s students. I only just found out.”

That was the truth. At the time, she had known nothing about Sean. Whenever she asked about him, he had always dodged the questions with ease.

Only later, when she saw reports online, had she realized he was the Johnson family heir.

Morten raised his glass with a smile. “You are both among my most valued students. It’s rare to gather like this-eat well, drink well, and enjoy yourselves.”

The others stood, raising their glasses. “Thank you, sir.”

Tracy’s cup was filled with wine. Sean frowned, displeasure clear in his voice. “Your stomach is bad. Switch it.”

The authority in his tone stunned the table. He knew Tracy’s health problems? Just what was

their relationship?

Tracy forced a smile. “It’s fine. It’s only red wine. Since everyone’s celebrating, I’ll just have one glass.”

One glass of red wine shouldn’t be a problem, she thought.

Sean reached over and took the glass straight from her hand, his face dark. “Do you have a death wish?”

He poured her a glass of juice instead and pushed it toward her. Tracy took it helplessly, not daring to meet his eyes.

Sam, looking guilty, said, “Tracy, I’m sorry. I forgot you were just in the hospital for stomach pain. I shouldn’t have let you drink at all.”

Morten’s gaze softened with concern. “I heard you were supposed to give a speech at the seminar but didn’t make it because you weren’t well. Are you okay? How did it get bad enough to put you in the hospital?”

Tracy smiled faintly. “I’m fine now, Teacher. Don’t worry.”

But when she glanced up, her eyes collided with Sean’s deep, steady stare. She quickly lowered her head again, her heart uneasy.

It felt like he could see everything inside her, watching silently as she put on an act. The feeling was unbearable.

Halfway through the meal, Tracy’s stomach began to ache again. She excused herself to the

restroom.

Inside, she clutched the sink and gagged, but nothing came up. When the wave passed, she washed her face and stepped back out.

Right outside the restroom, she nearly bumped into Sean. His expression was dark. “Still think you can drink like this?”

Tracy lifted her head and met his gaze. Her lips parted to retort, but the words stuck in her throat.

He was only trying to help her. To snap back would make her seem ungrateful.

Sean suddenly asked, “Did you bring your medicine?”

“I did.” She nodded and pulled the pill bottle from her bag.

He stopped a passing waiter and asked for water. Handing it to her, he ordered, “Take it.”

Tracy poured a pill into her mouth. The bitterness spread instantly, making her wince, and she drained the entire glass of water.

Sean’s voice was low and firm above her. “From now on, no alcohol. Not any kind.”
