Chapter 5
Shanan left the country after that, heartbroken.
Yet, the moment he heard Jayden had passed away, he immediately moved his company back into the country and began pursuing me passionately.
Thanks to Jesse and Joel’s continuous manipulation, I had built a bastion around my heart. No matter how hard Shanan tried, I refused to remarry. Despite that, Shanan stayed by my side without any title and supported my career with everything he had.
I could confidently say that it was mostly thanks to him that I remained the richest woman in
the country.
And me? I simply treated him as an opportunist. I never even took him seriously!
There was pain in my heart as I looked at Shanan with guilt in my eyes.
“I was supposed to pick you up… I wasn’t expecting you to come find me again…”
The moment I spoke, tears started to roll down my cheeks uncontrollably.
Shanan’s clear eyes were full of pain as well, and he sighed softly.
“No need to cry. I found you, didn’t I?”
The words just escaped his lips when I heard the sound of something heavy moving quickly in the air. Suddenly, he collapsed.
I looked up in shock just to see Jayden holding a fire extinguisher in his hands, glaring murderously at us.
“Lauren, all I asked for is just a little bit of your skin–not your life! And here you are, flirting with another man right in front of me! Do you even care if I’m your husband anymore? Once we transplant your skin onto Nel, I’ll deal with you properly!” He turned to his brothers. “Do it!”
At his command, Jesse and Joel dragged the unconscious Shanan aside and reached out to cover my mouth and nose.
I stared in horror at the blood dripping from the back of Shanan’s head, my heart pounding.
“Jayden… How dare you?! I’m the one who gave you everything! Why would you do all of this just to please a maid?”
Jayden’s expression was cold, and his voice was even colder.
“In your eyes, she’s just a maid. But to us, she’s a goddess of purity and kindness. She’s much better than some arrogant heiress like you! When my grandma, my only family, fell sick
1/2
because of a heart attack… It was Nel who sent someone to save her. No matter how much look down on us commoners, you’ll never be able to compare to Nel’s kindness!”
My pupils shrank.

Nellie came for nothing, and I kept her around since childhood as a companion. She enjoyed the luxurious life of my household. She couldn’t even be bothered to leave the house without me dragging her along.
How could someone like that save someone on the street?
If I was right, it was I who saved Jayden’s grandmother.
“Did that incident happen fourteen years ago, on a snowy day on East Street?”
Jayden frowned deeply after hearing my question. “How did you know that?”
Suddenly, I wanted to laugh.
I was right.
At that time, I was still quite young. I was riding in the Hanson family car with my father on our way to a banquet. We passed by a crowd where a boy was kneeling, sobbing next to an old woman who had collapsed from a heart attack.
Out of impulse, I had my father send our bodyguards to take her to the hospital and even cover the cost. I didn’t think much about it.
Later that night, I casually told the story to Nellie like it was news.
I never thought Nellie would claim the credit and use it on Jayden and the others to trample all
over me.
What a joke!
“Jayden, have you ever wondered about how a mere maid like Nellie, who had no family, managed to afford to pay for your grandma’s medical costs?”
Jayden froze, but quickly composed himself.
“What are you saying, Lauren? Are you trying to steal Nellie’s credit?” he barked.
