Chapter 6
“Nel told me everything in detail. She knew what my grandma was wearing that day, and the cost of the hospital bills. Do you know why she remembered it so clearly? The numbers matched the amount you spent on lunch that day–500 dollars!
“I know you’re used to living a life of arrogance. You look down on us poor people. You forced me to marry into the Hanson family, turning me into a live–in son–in–law and a
laughingstock. You don’t understand anything!”
Jayden lunged at me like a madman and pinned me down.
“Lauren, I gave up all my dignity so I could stay in the Hanson household–but Nel is my bottom line. I won’t allow anything to happen to her! Even if God himself shows up today, you’re donating your skin to her for her graft!”
He clamped his hand over my nose and mouth, his eyes full of hate. He was trying to suffocate me!
I bit his hand hard, and he let go from the pain.
Unfortunately, I was still wrapped in casts. I couldn’t even escape!
He let out an icy chuckle and tried again. “Lauren, I gave the rest of my life to you. All I’m asking is a little bit of interest. Why must you go against me even for something like this?”
Just as I was unable to hold on, loud banging came from the door.
“Miss Hanson! We’re the doctors! Are you alright? Please open the door!”
Jayden and the others froze, cursing under their breath. They exchanged a glance, then immediately dragged Shanan under the bed and carefully wiped the blood off the floor.
Joel then took over and covered my mouth so I couldn’t make a sound, while Jayden straightened his clothes and spoke calmly to the doctors.
“My wife’s fine. She’s signing a consent form to donate her skin to Nel. Just give us a few more seconds.”
There was a pause–then, a nurse from outside the door asked, “Are you referring to Miss Nellie Taylor? She isn’t injured, though. Why would she need a skin graft?”
The three of them instantly froze.
I used this chance to break free and scream with everything I had, “They’re trying to kill me! Break the door open now!”
When the doctors heard my desperate yells, they tried to slam the door down. Jayden, too

stunned to hear that Nellie hadn’t been injured, simply stood there, watching blankly as the door burst open.
The doctors immediately rushed over to me.
I used the last of my strength to tell them, “There’s someone under the bed! You must save
him!”
When I once again opened my eyes, I was already in a different ward. As soon as I woke man watching over me sighed in relief.
“Are you alright, Lauren?” he asked, concerned.
Hearing that familiar voice, I turned my head.
up,
the
Shanan was sitting beside me, his head wrapped in a ridiculous amount of gauze. He looked like he was in a bad state, but his eyes were full of spirit.
I felt tears welling up in my eyes.
“Shanan, are you willing to take me as your wife?”
Shanan didn’t expect me to be so straightforward, and immediately dropped to his knees. He pulled out a small box from his pocket. Looking at it, I saw a ring inside.
“When your father told me you agreed to marry me, I was so scared it might just be a hoax- that it was a trick you thought of just to mess with me. Even so, I came back anyway. Lauren, I` should be the one asking this… Will you marry me?”
I nodded, tears in my eyes, and let him put the ring onto my finger.
For the first time, in both my past and present lives, I accept Shanan’s caress.
After I calmed down, Shanan asked me how I wanted to deal with Jayden and the others.
Only then did I learn that after the doctors broke in, Jayden insisted that I had volunteered to donate my skin, yelling and screaming, using his status as my husband.
He even took out a letter of consent with my fake signature!
