Her voice trembled slightly despite her efforts to sound calm. She had no idea what he meant. 

How had she “set him up”? 

Then it suddenly hit her. 

Could he have found out about Aurora’s identity?

He could hardly believe how completely he had been deceived.

But Tessa had expected this day would come. She had already prepared her excuse.

“I don’t understand what you’re implying,” she said, feigning innocence. “I truly didn’t know my sister was the Carter family’s lady. Even my mother and I didn’t realize the man she was with was Lucas.”
