for him.
“The situation’s a bit complicated, Madam Williamson. It’s better if we talk once you arrive.”
The chief kept his wording vague, careful not to give too much away.
He’d already used every trick in the book just to get both families to come to the station.
There was no other way–those two really couldn’t be held there any longer.
The longer they stayed, the more time it wasted for everyone.
And neither of them respected authority.
The chief had no choice but to take this approach.
And to be fair, it was working.
Grace was genuinely curious to see what kind of state Julian was in now.
The chief had a point–seeing was believing.
It would be better for her to go in person.
At home, there were still certain limitations.
But stepping out–only then could she fully grasp what was really going on.
So, she agreed to the chief’s suggestion and said she’d head over that afternoon.
The chief nodded repeatedly, eager and relieved.
He’d been waiting for this moment–the day he could finally get them all in one room.
After ending the call, he finally exhaled.
At last, the matter was close to being resolved.
If this dragged on any longer, he swore his life expectancy would drop in half,
He honestly didn’t know how the Millford chief had managed to endure it before.
And even kept them around that long.
To be honest, the Ravenshore chief was still amazed.
But it was precisely because of a moment of soft–heartedness that he ended up bringing both of them back.

Everyone had to pay the price for their own decisions.
The chief had barely gotten a moment’s peace when someone came over to report that Tessa was causing another scene.
He pressed his fingers to his temple. “What is there to argue about now?”
“She’s only been here a few days, and it’s been nothing but drama.”
The officer looked just as exasperated. “I don’t know either, sir. She always seems to have some
issue.
“She’s saying she doesn’t want to be in the same cell as Julian. Claims he smells terrible.”
The chief rolled his eyes so hard they nearly got stuck.
He stood up abruptly. “This is ridiculous! They’re engaged, aren’t they? What’s there to complain about? Does she really expect us to cater to that kind of nonsense?”
The officer lowered his head, frustration flashing in his eyes.
He didn’t say anything, but lately he’d been harboring plenty of resentment toward Tessa.
He just couldn’t understand how one woman could be so high–maintenance–with demands for everything.
And the chief had a point.
They were supposed to be engaged, so why the sudden disgust?
Acting like Julian’s smell was beneath her–it was laughable.
But he was just a low–ranking officer.
All he could do was grumble silently.
“So… should we separate them?” he asked hesitantly. “The holding cells are already overcrowded. We’re tight on space as it is.”
Tessa and Julian had been transferred all the way from Millford.
The Ravenshore station had even cleared out a special cell just for them.
Lately, though, the crime rate had spiked.
That cell had taken a lot of effort and reshuffling to free up.
“No need.”
