Chapter 48

Glenn arched an eyebrow, his handsome face lighting up with barely contained excitement. That day, his date kept clinging to him, so he missed his chance to get Edwina’s number.

He thought he’d lost out on a fascinating woman, but destiny threw them together again.

Edwina, guess we really were destined to meet again,” Glenn teased.

He couldn’t help but move closer, grinning like a peacock showing off its feathers.

Glenn’s overthetop friendliness and how close he got totally crossed the line of what Edwina considered acceptable from strangers.

She suppressed her irritation and discreetly stepped back, keeping her cool.

Edwina said, Thanks.

Mind moving? You’re in the way. I need to see my patient.”

Baxter barked, Watch your manners. Mr. Glenn is the heir of the Duncan family. Who are you to boss him around?”

Glenn raised a hand, cutting Baxter off. That’s enough. She’s my friend, and an honored guest of the Duncan family.

Baxter, I’m here, so it’s not your place to call the shots in this house.”

Glenn flashed Baxter a gentle smile, but even with that soft tone, it was enough to make Baxter shiver.

Word on the street was Glenn was a velvet knife, deadly beneath all that charm.

Edwina arched a brow, taking his measure and filing away what she’d learned about him.

It was the first time Baxter had ever been put in his place by Glenn. He clammed up, hung his head, and faded into the background.

Glenn stepped aside. You here to treat my uncle too?”

Edwina, not usually the one to start a conversation, asked, That guy’s your uncle?”

Yeah, we’re with the Duncan family. I’m Glenn, and that’s my uncle, Randolph Duncan,Glenn replied.

Get me his medical records,Edwina said.

Glenn immediately ordered Baxter to fetch them. This time, Baxter didn’t dare refuse.

Standing by the bed, Conrad’s face darkened as he listened in, his anger boiling over. So you’re Edwina Lennox, the one who treated Mrs. Imelda Gibson?”

You know me?Edwina asked, a little surprised.

Conrad clenched the needle tighter, letting out a cold laugh. Jacelyn is my student. You messed her up bad. She was my pride and joy, and now, thanks to you, she’ll never be a doctor again!”

Edwina hadn’t expected to run into an acquaintance there.

She kept her cool. I didn’t ruin her. She had it coming.”

Edwina, you got the guts to bet with me? If I manage to save Randolph, you have to apologize to Jacelyn in front of everyone and bow to her ten times!Conrad taunted.

Conrad was hellbent on getting payback for Jacelyn.

This girl thinks she can shake up Grindel City’s medical world? As long as I’m here, she’s just dreaming!Conrad sneered to himself.

Edwina’s

eyes went cold. I don’t do bets.”

Are you scared?Conrad snorted, laughing out loud.

Sorry, I never gamble with a patient’s life. Let me say it again, don’t stick a needle in that spot. Step aside,” Edwina shot back.

She was running out of patience.

Edwina could see Conrad wasn’t some quack based on his skill. But he was still rough, and pride was clouding his judgment. If he kept acting like this, he’d only end up hurting people.

Edwina’s cool composure at such a young age made Conrad, pushing fifty, look downright ridiculous in comparison.

Speak up, Glenn. You’re the patient’s nephew. Are you seriously gonna let her treat your uncle?Conrad shot back, his tone full of mockery.

Before Glenn could say a word, another voice rang out from the doorway. I do. I trust her.”

Edwina recognized that voice instantly. She turned, her eyes rippling with emotion. Kelvin? What’s he doing here?she wondered.

As Kelvin stepped into the main hall, he caught sight of a guy hovering close to Edwina.

Glenn’s eyes never left her. Kelvin knew that Glenn was staking his claim.

Someone’s got their eye on my little wolf?Kelvin thought, a flicker of possessiveness flashing through him.

He strode over, grabbed Edwina’s hand, and pulled her right back to his side.

After all the time they’d spent together lately, Edwina wasn’t as jumpy about his touch anymore. She didn’t push him away like before, and the resistance she used to have was pretty much gone.

Besides, Kelvin was smooth about it. He just gave a quick pull, then let her go.

Conrad snorted, Kelvin? Why is the boss of Gibson Group here? You think you can throw your family’s wealth and influence around to bully me?

Do you really want to make enemies in the medical world? This isn’t your turf!”

Conrad had nothing but contempt for businessmen. He thought they were all just greedy for money.

Kelvin pulled out his phone and played a recording. It was Randolph’s voice. If anything happens to me, you’re in charge of everything, including my work and my life”

Kelvin explained, I’m the head of the Luminara satellite project, and Randolph is the liaison sent by the Central Agency to work with me. No one in this world wants him alive more than I do.”

He shot Glenn a look. Right, Mr. Duncan?”

The air crackled with tension.

Glenn shoved his hands in his pockets, his tone lazy as ever. Kelvin, what are you getting at? You think I want Randolph dead? He’s my uncle, you know.”

Kelvin retorted, Yeah, he’s your uncle. But in your father’s generation, he isthe youngest. He is also the family head’s favorite.

If he hadn’t gone off to the central agency’s space research division, the right to inherit the Duncan family probably wouldn’t have landed in your lap.”

Glenn’s eyes sharpened, his usual laidback vibe vanishing in an instant.

Kelvin, you’d better watch your mouth,” Glenn retorted, his tone frosty.

Edwina shot Glenn a sidelong look. Now she understood why his first move after coming in wasn’t to check on Randolph, but to mess around with her.

Man, the stuff that goes on in these rich families is insane, Edwina thought.

Kelvin’s voice softened. Edwina, go on. I trust you, it’s all in your hands now.

Adrian and the rest are counting on you to get Randolph back on his feet.”

Randolph was the Minister of Aerospace. He’d come to Grindel City to work with Kelvin on the satellite launch. But something went wrong along the way.

The Luminara satellite project was a huge deal internationally. If it made it into orbit, Cormyriax’s status would shoot straight up.

Kelvin was starting to think Randolph’s accident wasn’t just a random mishap. Maybe some foreign powers were up to something shady behind the scenes.

Peter, show Dr. Chavez out,Kelvin ordered, his voice brooking no argument.

Conrad’s status tanked in a flash. He glared, teeth clenched. Are you kidding me? I’m the real deal here. Why should I make way for some random kid off the street?

You messed up my student, and now you wanna steal my thunder too? Edwina, you’re seriously twisted!”

Desperate to prove he was still in charge, Conrad stabbed the silver needle right into that spot on Randolph’s forehead.

Conrad said, Just wait. He’ll be fine in no time.

Edwina, don’t think you can just take advantage of everyone!”

The next second, Randolph slowly opened his eyes and sat up, as if he’d just snapped out of a coma.

His medical records said he was thirtysix, but he looked like a man in his fifties at that moment. Those sleepless nights working on space safety had really aged him.

Uncle, you’re awake!Glenn blurted out.

Randolph scanned the room, didn’t even spare Glenn a glance, and went straight to Kelvin.

Kelvin, how’s the Luminara satellite going?Randolph asked, his voice steady despite everything.
