Kelvin’s face darkened. He was about to raise his hand again when his phone lit up.

It was the director of Eden Hospital.

Kelvin answered unmediately, What is it?”

After a few urgent words came through, the pressure around his dropped, his voice turning icy.

Ill on my way.Kelvin said.

By the time he hung up, the auctioneer had already brought the gavel down.

Congratulations to Suite Eleven for winning the bloodruby bracelet, the auctioneer announced.

The entire hall was stunned.

It was the first time anyone had ever snatched a piece out of the ibsonshands. Curiosity about the mysterious bidder in Suite Eleven sirged.

Peter knew Kelvin had wanted the bracelet for the old matriarch He bowed quickly. Kelvin, I’ll head over to Suite Eleven and try to talk them into it. I’ll make sure-

Kelvin lifted a hand for silence, then raised his phone again.

Hello, this is Kelvin Gibson. My grandmother just started vomiting and has severe diarrhea. Is this a postop issue or a different complication?Kelvin asked.

Edwina was on her way to settle the payment when she paused at the name.

Kelvin Gibson! she thought. The Kelvin the Simmons family wants to link up with?

His grandmother? Is that the same elderly woman who had surgery at Eden Hospital?

Seriously, what are the odds?

She tried to conjure his face. The features were a blur, but the build, that she remembered. He was seriously well put together.

Alright. I’ll be there in half an hour, Edwina said, then hung up

After wrapping things up with the auction house, she took the piece and slipped out through a private passage, neatly avoiding the crowd that was still buzzing,

She had just reached the door and was about to call Ivan when Kelvin came toward her.

With his tall build and that intense, commanding presence, he was impossible to ignore.

Edwina frowned slightly, unsure if he knew she was here or if this was pure coincidence.

While she took his measure, Kelvin’s gaze dropped to the box in her hands.

A blood ruby bracelet needed to be kept in a glass case that held stabile temperature.

So it was this girl who won the bracelet in Suite Eleven, Kelvin

ought. Surprise flickered in his eyes, then settled into calm.

Peter had already pulled the car around and stopped in front of em Ile hurried out, ready to open Kelvin’s door,

He

Kelvin moved first. He opened the door for Edwina and braced hand above her head, a quiet, protective gesture.

Peter had seen Edwina once before, back at the hospital Watching Kelvin now, watching that deliberate courtesy, the way hist body angled toward her without hesitation, Peter felt the gossip me inside him flared bright

Looks like we’ve got a contender for the future Mrs. Gibson, he thought, grinning to himself.

Edwina didn’t hesitate. She accepted Kelvin’s help like it was nothing, dipped her head, and slid into the back seat.

Kelvin followed a beat later. The rear had been roomy, but once hose absurdly long legs folded in, the space tightened up

Tas

A clean, unfamiliar male scent slipped over to her. Edwina edges away on instinct, putting a full person’s worth of space

between them.

Peter took the hint and dropped the privacy partition.

The car merged into traffic, speed rising. In the back, silence seed, heavy and still. Kelvin turned and looked at her.

She sat loose, almost casual, but there was distance in the way she held herself.

Her face was fineboned and striking, touched with a rare chill. Her eyes, especiallysharp, cool, unapologetically guarded.

The edge didn’t fit her age. She looked young. Too young for that much armor.

Kelvin couldn’t help but wonder, What happened to her to build it?

Edwina felt the stare. It went on a beat too long. Irritation sparked.

She turned, ready to snap, when the car took a sudden hard turn off balance, she pitched forward. A strong arm caught her around the waist and hauled her back. She hit a cool, solid chest

“What happened?Kelvin’s voice came low. His hand stayed locked at her waist,

Two cars clipped each other up ahead, Peter called from the front. “I swerved around it.”

Keep it steady”

Yes, sir”

By the time the words left them, Edwina had already slipped free, quick and sure.

His scent clung to her, unfamiliar and sharp, making her skin prickle. Her face went a shade colder.

Slar glanced out at the crash sliding past her window and didn’t see Kelvin rub his thumb and forefinger together, an absent press and roll

Under her loose clothes, her waist had been unexpectedly slim, ft.

A faint pearblossom note in her hair had skimmed his senses when she fell against him, subtle and distracting.

He was surprised to realize he didn’t dislike it.

They pulled up to Eden Hospital. Edwina looked down at the dep bloodruby bracelet on her wrist and hesitated.

I shouldn’t bring something this pricey to a hospital visit. It isn’t appropriate, she thought.

Sensing it. Kelvin cut in with a clean order. Peter, stay with the car. Watch the valuables.”

Imelda’s room was packed, white coats wall to wall. Jacelyn stood near the bed, laying it on thick, sweettalking so hard a few doctors actually looked startled.

Everyone out.Edwina stood in the doorway, brow pinched, voe cool.

The room smelled stale, and with so many bodies crowding the bed, the air was suffocating

Imelda’s gaze snapped over. She saw Edwina beside Kelvin and up. Kelvin, is this the little angel who saved me? She’s beautiful.”

Kelvin’s mouth twitched. If the director of the hospital hadn’t beefed him, he would have sworn his grandmother was faking

The director hustled the staff out. Jacelyn, unwilling to quit, dared up to greet Kelvin. He stepped aside and shut the door with a firm click. The message landed.

Edwina checked Imelda carefully, asked what she needed to ask, then looked at the container on the side table.

You started vomiting after eating this, right?she asked.

Imelda had been busy admiring her. The question snapped her back. Yes. Someone sent it over, said it was a nourishing soup. I even had a doctor look it over. They said it was fine.”

Edwina leaned in and inhaled, then lifted the lid and took a small sip. Her lips pressed together. Her eyes went cool

There’s seafood powder in the broth to boost the flavor, she said With your current meds, seafood is a no.”

She glanced at Kelvin, a hint of scold in her tone. Remember that?”

Something tightened in his chest under her look. Yeah.”

Imelda had never seen Kelvin fold that fast. Her approval of Edina spiked. Little angel, I don’t even know your name.”

Edwina Lennox. She said it offhand, then stepped out to have someone bring in a set of sterile acupuncture needles.

A short session later, warmth spread through Imelda’s body. The nausea and gut discomfort vanished like smoke.

Thrilled, she grabbed Edwina’s small hand. Pretty, capable, and able to keep her grandson in line. This one’s a keeper, she thought. She is not getting away.”

I

Edwina,Imelda asked fondly, may I call you that?”

Edwina’s first instinct was to pull her hand back, but the woman was still a patient. She held steady, a bit stiff. If you’d like.”

She figured it would he a quick thankyou. She underestimated how long an elder could chat once she felt better. Holding the same posture, she felt her muscles began to ache

Kelvin quietly rolled a stool behind her. She didn’t refuse. She sat about to ease her shoulders, when Imelda said, Kelvin, come sit. Keep me company.”

Imelda shified her grip so she still held Edwina’s arm and waved Kelvin over with the other hand.

Soon their forearms were pressed side by side, both snug in Imela’s affectionate hold. She looked from one to the other, and the more she looked, the more she decided they fit.

Edwina felt like that arm wasn’t even hers anymore. Heat she didn’t recognize. A touch that didn’t belong to her. A scent that

wasn’t hert

Worse, with the height difference, Kelvin’s breath kept skimming her car.

I swear, I am one second away from snapping, Edwina thought barely holding it together.
