Adrian pushed himself up from Brian’s hold, eyes wide as he watched Edwina work her magic.Â
With Edwina in action, those dozen assassins didn’t stand a chance.Â
“Let’s take turns and wear her out. No way she’s got enough stamina to keep going forever!” one of the assassins shouted.Â
Edwina didn’t even flinch. She let the baseball bat fall, plucked a hairpin from her hair, and twirled it between her fingers, revealing a glinting silver needle.Â
“Tag–teaming is not a bad idea. But with me, you only get one round,” she said.Â
One after another, the assassins squared off against Edwina.Â
However, the moment they got close to that silver needle in her hand, they crumpled to the ground, limp and helpless, as if their bones had melted and their joints had snapped.Â
They couldn’t muster a shred of strength.Â
“She’s an absolute monster!” one of them cried out.Â
“Get out of here!” another shouted.Â
The assassins scattered in all directions, fleeing in panic.Â
Edwina slipped the silver needle back into her sleeve, stood, and helped Adrian up. She said, “You’re fine. It’s just a deep flesh wound, no bones or organs involved.Â
“Once the ambulance gets here, you’ll need to go to the hospital to get it cleaned and bandaged. Make sure to remind the doctor to give you a tetanus shot.”Â
Adrian nodded. That spiked baseball bat had nearly punched a hole in him.Â
“Edwina, are you hurt?” he asked.Â
Edwina’s blue dress was stained so deeply with blood that it looked almost crimson, making her seem both dangerously captivating and downright terrifying.Â
But Adrian and Brian weren’t fazed in the slightest. To them, Edwina was their protector.Â
Edwina shook her head, her voice steady. “I’m good. Let’s get out of here.”Â
The security door swung open again. Edwina instinctively braced herself for a fight. But when she saw who it was, her defenses dropped in an instant.Â
Edwina didn’t notice it, but she trusted Kelvin so much now that just seeing him made a wave of unexpected calm wash over her.Â

When Kelvin saw Edwina covered in blood, his heart leaped into his throat.Â

He didn’t care what Edwina thought, or that Adrian and Brian were standing right there. He strode over and pulled her into his arms.Â
He’d just been in a brutal fight down in the parking lot, where the assassins had nearly hurt Randolph. He was worried sick about Edwina, but he couldn’t leave.Â
The moment Peter took Randolph to the police, Kelvin didn’t care how many mercenaries were still upstairs and came back.Â
Fear was about to burst out of his chest, but the moment he saw Edwina, he finally felt like he could breathe again.Â
“Edwina, are you hurt?” he asked, his voice tight with worry.Â
He was holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.Â
She coughed lightly. She was way calmer than Kelvin. “Let go of me first. I’m fine.Â
“Let’s go. Adrian’s injured.”Â
“Okay,” Kelvin nodded. As he turned, his sharp eyes caught a blinding flash from a rearview mirror.Â
He’d never served in the military, but thanks to his father’s connections, he’d grown up around all kinds ofÂ
weapons.Â
He knew that the light came from a BHK2 sniper rifle.Â
“Edwina, get down!” Kelvin yelled.Â
The bullet shot out of the barrel, ripping through the air with a deadly whistle.Â
Edwina spun around and caught sight of the gun. Her reflexes were sharp, but nobody was fast enough to outrun a bullet.Â
She couldn’t believe these guys had actually managed to sneak guns past border security.Â
There was a muffled grunt.Â
It wasn’t Edwina who made the sound.Â
In that split–second, Kelvin tackled Edwina to the ground, shielding her with his body as the bullet ripped into him.Â
“Mr. Gibson!” Peter yelled.Â
He’d just arrived and saw it all go down. He shouted at the top of his lungs, watching in horror as Kelvin collapsed, powerless to help.Â
Several military officers rushed in. “He’s up there. Don’t let him get away!”Â

The whole crew charged upstairs after the sniper. The mercenary saw the situation turning bad and packed up his rifle in a heartbeat, moving with the kind of speed only a pro could pull off.Â
At that moment, Edwina didn’t give a damn about the shooter. She was on the ground, clutching Kelvin to her chest.Â
His eyes were shut, his breathing barely there, and his face had turned deathly pale the instant the bullet struck.Â
Edwina’s voice was hoarse as she said, “Kelvin.”Â
“Get an ambulance!” she barked. She looked calm, but her trembling hands betrayed her true emotions.Â
Her hands were covered in blood. It kept gushing from Kelvin’s back. No matter what she did, she couldn’t stop it.Â
“Kelvin, hold on!” Edwina’s voice was shaking, nothing like her usual calm.Â
Adrian and Brian were freaking out, tears streaming down their faces.Â
After all these years at Gibson Group, they’d never seen Kelvin so helpless.Â
“Adrian, is Mr. Gibson gonna die?” Brian stammered.Â
Adrian snapped, “Don’t jinx it. There is no way he is dying. He’s made it through every disaster at Gibson Group, like hell a stupid bullet’s gonna take him out.Â
“There is just no freaking way.”Â
Adrian kept mumbling it to himself, not sure if he was trying to reassure Brian or just keep himself from falling apart.Â
The nurses got Kelvin into the ambulance, while Brian helped Adrian get to the hospital.Â
After the chaos, the Royal Court Hotel was left in total shambles.Â
Edwina stood frozen, drenched in blood, her mind wiped clean. All she could replay was that moment Kelvin dove to shield her, taking the bullet for her.Â
They weren’t close. They even had butted heads more than once.Â
She thought, ‘Why the hell would he put his life on the line for me?‘Â
Edwina just couldn’t wrap her head around it.Â
Sweat was pouring down her forehead, and the smell of blood was thick in the air, making her stomach churn.Â
Edwina stared at the blood on her hands, then, she jumped in her car and floored it straight to the hospital.Â
The lights above the operating room blazed, indicating that a sureÂ
sin progress.Â

A doctor said, “The bullet went straight through his rib, barely missed his heart by a few millimeters. If we try to remove it now, he could lose too much blood.Â
“This is a critical condition form. Family members need to sign here.”Â
In the hallway, Imelda, her hair as white as snow, was supported by Peter as she shakily signed her name.Â
Her eyes were rimmed with red, and her grip on her cane grew tighter and tighter.Â
For a split second, Edwina had no idea how to face her.Â
Imelda turned and saw Edwina, and she froze for a moment.Â
“Imelda, I’m so sorry, I…” Edwina started, her voice trembling.Â
Imelda gently interrupted her, pulling a handkerchief from her pocket and carefully wiping away the blood from Edwina’s face and hands.Â
She said, “Sweetheart, it’s not your fault. I’m just glad you’re okay.”Â
Imelda’s voice was raspy and thick with emotion. “Kelvin… Sometimes, things are just meant to happen. The ones who should answer for this are those killers, not you.”Â
Edwina lowered her eyes, looking calm on the outside, but inside her mind was a whirlwind. Her hands felt like ice.Â
“Edwina, let me stay here and keep watch. You should go home and get some rest,” Imelda said softly, her voice full of care.Â
“No, I’m not leaving. I’ll wait here with you,” Edwina insisted.Â
She was determined to stay until Kelvin was safely wheeled out of the operating room.Â
Peter rushed in, breathless. “Mrs. Gibson, the Gibson Group shareholders just heard Mr. Gibson got shot, and now they want an emergency board meeting immediately.”Â
Gibson Group was never as calm as it looked. The only thing keeping the chaos at bay was Kelvin holding it all together.Â
Now that he was down, all those power–hungry sharks were coming out of hiding, ready to scramble for power while the throne was up for grabs.Â
