Chapter 61Â
Edwina looked at Sam.Â
She’d heard of Sam before. He was a legend worldwide. Every machine he invented transcended national boundaries, totally independent of any government.Â
He handed them out to whoever needed them, simply because he enjoyed it. He had a legion of science geeks who idolized him.Â
“Professor, you forgot your shirt!” Randall Fletcher, the genius behind the automatic heart pacemaker, was chasing afterÂ
Sam.Â
“Professor, don’t forget your water bottle. It’s late. You need some water!” Henry Shepherd, the brains behind the autonomous electric vehicle system, was right on his heels.Â
Within minutes, a bunch of Sam’s students, all the tech whizzes, came running after him.Â
They’d heard Sam had dashed out in the middle of the night, and they were all super worried.Â
Sam was admired by his students, brilliant in every way, but totally hopeless at looking after himself. His students always had to fuss over him.Â
As one tech genius after another came running over, Desmond had no choice but to believe that this really was Sam, the same person who sold the ECD device to the Cole family back then.Â
But deep down, he just couldn’t bring himself to accept it.Â
Sam urged, “Edwina, hurry and save him. The ECD machine’s already been flown in. Is my timing good enough? Do you need anything else?Â
“My students are all here. If you’re missing any tools, we’ll build them on the spot. Speed’s not an issue!”Â
The four students behind him nodded in perfect sync. “Yes, Miss Lennox!”Â
After all, she was Sam’s beloved niece. The title fit perfectly.Â
“Thank you all!” Edwina gave a deep bow. She couldn’t waste another second. She took the ECD and hurried into the operating room.Â
“Professor Richardson, I honestly didn’t know Edwina was your niece. We used to be engaged. I was just messing around with her earlier!” Desmond blurted out.Â
Sam’s face darkened, a complete 180 from how he’d acted around Edwina.Â
Sam said coldly, “When I sold the ECD, I made it clear that only those with real integrity and genuine medical skill deserveÂ
to use it.Â
“On my way here, I did some digging. The Cole family has been using that device to make money.Â
“You have even gone so far as to remove perfectly good organs from patients.Â
“I won’t let you have the ECD anymore.”Â
Desmond’s face fell. The Cole family’s private hospital depended entirely on the ECD, without it, the place would be finished.Â

“Professor Richardson, you can’t just do this. This is a total breach of contract. You… ” Desmond protested, his voice cracking with desperation.Â
“Don’t bother arguing. There’s no breach here. The contract spelled it out from day one. The Cole family broke the rules, and they did it blatantly. I won’t ever forgive that,” Sam replied.Â
Desmond felt like he couldn’t breathe. “You’re really going to take the ECD out of the hospital?”Â
Sam shook his head, his tone icy. “I won’t use a machine that’s been used to hurt people.Â
“I’ve already ordered someone to destroy it.”Â
“That’s the ECD. There are only two in the whole world. How could you just destroy it?” Desmond was losing it.Â
That machine brought in nearly ten percent of the Cole family’s yearly income, which was a massive chunk.Â
Sam sneered. “So what if I smash it? Don’t forget, I’m the one who built it.Â
“Security, get this loser who harasses my niece out of here. Who do you think you are?”Â
Desmond never imagined that a quick trip to the hospital would blow up in his face like this.Â
Now, not only had he made a real enemy of the Gibson family, but he’d lost the ECD, lost the hospital, and cut off the Cole family’s cash flow for good.Â
When Desmond’s parents found out, they beat him within an inch of his life that very night. Even his mom, who always spoiled him, didn’t try to stop it.Â
After all, ten percent of their income was gone in a single night. In the end, it was Abby who pleaded for mercy and spared Desmond.Â
Abby helped Desmond back to his room, still in total disbelief.Â
Abby thought, ‘Wait, Edwina’s uncle is Sam?Â
‘Her parents are just country bumpkins. How could Gloria’s brother be the famous Sam everyone talks about?Â
“Something’s definitely off. I need to look into this and get to the bottom of it!‘Â
With the ECD cutting tool in Edwina’s skilled hands, the bullet was extracted cleanly.Â
Kelvin’s vitals quickly returned to normal, his condition finally stable.Â
When Edwina finally walked out of the hospital room, the sun was already up. Her heart finally settled, and her nerves relaxed for the first time all night.Â
But as soon as she let herself breathe, everything went black before her eyes.Â
Edwina dropped out cold.Â
After that vicious brawl with the mercenaries, followed by seven straight hours of high–stakes surgery on Kelvin, she was completely exausted.Â
“Edwina!” Sam called out, rushing over to her side.Â
He caught her before she hit the ground, then wasted no time getting the hospital to set up the best room for her, never leaving her bedside.Â
He lowered his voice, unable to hide his pride. “My niece. Not only are you stunning, but you’re a total genius, pulling off aÂ
2/4Â
surgery like that!”Â
Edwina looked so much like Gloria. Every time Sam saw her, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness.Â
When Edwina finally woke up, Gloria and Darius were right there by her bedside.Â
Edwina hadn’t expected to pass out like that. ‘Looks like I really need to toughen up. After being pampered by the Simmons family, my body’s gotten way too delicate,‘ she thought to herselfÂ
Gloria wasn’t usually the crying type, but the moment she saw Edwina, she just couldn’t stop the tears.Â
Once she started crying, Sam teared up too.Â
Darius felt super awkward. He was used to comforting Gloria, but when it came to Sam, he had no clue what to do.Â
“Come on, you two, quit crying. Edwina just woke up. Seeing you both like this will only make her feel even worse,” Darius tried to reason with them.Â
Gloria snapped at him, “What do you know?”Â
Sam chimed in, “Yeah, what do you know? You’re not even good enough for my sister, and don’t even think you daughter as amazing as Edwina!”Â
Darius was left speechless, just standing there awkwardly.Â
He felt that he was hurt greatly.Â
deserve aÂ
Gloria was sobbing uncontrollably, gently stroking Edwina’s cheek. It tickled. Edwina wasn’t used to this kind of closeness.Â
She frowned a little, but seeing how heartbroken Gloria was, she couldn’t bring herself to pull away.Â
Gloria choked out, “Edwina, you’ve been through so much.Â
“I already went to the police station. We’re going to catch every single one of those bastards who did this.Â
“Anyone who dares lay a finger on my daughter, they’ll pay for it. I swear, I won’t let them get away with it.”Â
Edwina nodded, feeling way better after some sleep. Her voice was steady now. “What about Kelvin? Is he okay?”Â
“You little rascal, always worrying about him and never about yourself,” Gloria teased, rolling her eyes.Â
Darius jumped in right away. “Hey, that’s not fair. If Kelvin hadn stepped in, Edwina would’ve been the one who got shot. “That Gibson kid put his life on the line for our girl. The Simmons family owes him big time. Honestly, Kelvin’s got myÂ
respect.”Â
Gloria’s eyes grew thoughtful as she mulled it over. She thought You know what, he’s got a point.Â
‘If Kelvin’s willing to put his life on the line for Edwina, that’s gotta be real love. There’s no other reason someone would doÂ
that?Â
They went to see Kelvin. He was in seriously bad shape. He’d had almost all his blood swapped out, staring death in the face and somehow making it back.Â
Gloria nodded. “Since you two are so in love, I won’t stand in your way anymore.Â
“So, when are you two planning to tie the knot?”Â
Edwina was speechless.Â

‘Seriously, when did we supposedly fall in love? Why am I the last to know?‘ Edwina thought.Â
