When the wheelchair reached the door of the hospital room, it stopped.Â
Imelda pulled the brake lever next to the armrest. Helene, who was pushing from behind, couldn’t push it any further. Helene’s smile froze, but her voice remained gentle. “Imelda, are you not feeling well?”Â
Imelda shook her head calmly. “Helene, I know how you feel about Kelvin, but the two of you aren’t right for each other.Â
Helene’s expression shifted slightly, but she forced a smile. “Imelda, I know Kelvin doesn’t like me, but I believe that persistence pays off.Â
“It’s easier for a girl to pursue a guy. You really don’t need to worry about me…”Â
Imelda raised her hand, her voice steady. “Helene, you’ve misunderstood me.Â
“Since that’s the case, I’ll be straight with you. I don’t know why Kelvin couldn’t call off the engagement when he went to the Simmons family last time.Â
“Even if he does like you, you’ll never be able to join the Gibson family.”Â
Those words shattered Helene’s dreams. Her face was full of confusion. “Why? Imelda, didn’t you always support Kelvin and me to be together?Â
“Weren’t I always your favorite? If you think there’s something wrong with me, I can change.”Â
Her nose turned red with anxiety, her eyes swimming with tears, like she’d just suffered theÂ
greatest injustice in the world.Â
Imelda turned her head and stared at Helene, an unspoken tension making Helene shiver inside. “Helene, do you truly treat me as your grandmother?”Â
“Imelda, what do you mean? I don’t get it,” Helene replied, confused.Â
Imelda let out a sigh and closed her eyes for a moment. “That time Jacelyn gave me the wrong meds on purpose, truly not know about it?”Â
did youÂ
As soon as Imelda said that, Helene’s face twisted in shock. She instinctively stepped back, feeling a cold chill sweep over her.Â
“Imelda, I…” she stammered.Â
Imelda said, “Helene, considering the Gibson and Simmons families have been friends for generations, and with the engagement between you two, I can let things slide.Â
“I’ll just chalk it up to you being young and making a mistake. Do I really need to spell it out for you?Â
“Jacelyn is my attending physician. She checks on me every day. I know she is foolish and slow–witted,Â
“Even if she has a grudge against Edwina, she wouldn’t go that far.Â
“Do you really think I wouldn’t have someone look into it? Or do you really think I’m old and powerless now, Helene?”Â
Those last words made Helene break out in a cold sweat.Â
She dropped to her knees with a thud. “Imelda, I know I messed up. I swear I never wanted to hurt you, I just didn’t knowÂ
what else to do.Â
VolachastÂ
“I only wanted you to hate Edwina, and that medicine really wouldn’t have harmed you. I am sorry.” She couldn’t even bring herself to be intimate with fielda at that moment.Â
Helene just realized just how stupid she’d been. She was dealing with Imelda, whose reputation in Grindel City was still untouchable. Yet she’d tried to pull off such a sloppy stunt right under her nose.Â
“I really know I was wrong…” Helene whispered.Â
Imelda said, brushing the dust off her dress, “Get up. Stop crying. If I wanted to hold you accountable, I wouldn’t have waited until now.Â
“Helene, go home and tell your parents to call off the engagement. Honestly, the Gibson family isn’t worthy of the Simmons family.Â
“Keep this secret, and think of it as my way of making it up to you for ending things.Â
“You’re still young. Don’t go to extremes in what you do.”Â
Helene choked back her sobs as she struggled to her feet, wiping away her tears. “I know,” she said softly.Â
The hospital room door swung open. Kelvin and Edwina walked in together. When Kelvin saw Helene, his brows furrowed, clear impatience in his eyes.Â
As soon as Imelda spotted Edwina, she stood up from her wheelchair with surprising energy. “My little fairy, I’ve been waiting for you.”Â
She grabbed Edwina’s hand and raised her voice on purpose. “Kelvin, I’ve already explained everything to Helene.Â
“She’ll go home and call off the engagement, so there’s no need to bother with the Simmons family anymore.Â
“Forget about that engagement with the Simmons family. What matters is the person standing right here.”Â
Edwina hesitated for a second, then nodded. “Alright.”Â
Imelda’s eyes sparkled with delight. “See? My little fairy already said yes. She’s totally on board with calling off the engagement.”Â
She was secretly thrilled as she thought, ‘It looks like Edwina might actually have some feelings for Kelvin after all.‘Â
‘Damn, this is bad,‘ Kelvin thought.Â
Ever since he got back home, things had been so hectic he hadn’t even had a chance to come to the hospital and talk to Imelda about this crucial issue.Â
“Grandma, I’m not breaking off the engagement. The Gibson family needs this marriage with the Simmons family!” Kelvin. blurted out.Â
“You…” Imelda shot Helene a look.Â
Helene just felt like the punchline of a bad joke.Â
Imelda grabbed Kelvin by the arm and dragged him aside, whispering, “What the hell are you doing? Why are you saying you won’t break off the engagement right in front of Edwina?Â
“Don’t tell me you’re actually into Helene now. Did you get you wrapped around her finger?”Â
Kelvin broke out in a cold sweat. “No, Grandma, listen to me. You need to brace yourself for this.”Â

“Does Helene have something on you?” ImeldÂ
asked.Â
Kelvin replied, “No. It’s Edwina, She’s actually a daughter of the Simmons family too. She’s Helene’s older sister.”Â
As soon as he said that, the whole room went dead silent.Â
A few seconds later, Imelda’s eyes went wideÂ
stared at Edwina. “Edwina’s from the Simmons family?*Â
She gave Kelvin a sharp smack on the arm. “$Â
“Talk about a funny coincidence. What aÂ
could you keep something this huge from me for so long?Â
OblÂ
Imelda just wanted to slap herself. Thank goodness Helene had heard her say all that stuff about calling off the engagement.Â
Imelda’s face was burning with embarrassment.Â
“Edwina, guess you really were destined to be Kelvin’s wifeÂ
afterÂ
all!” Imelda said with a grin.Â
Edwina didn’t answer, just smoothly changed the topic. “Come on, I’ll drive you back to the Gibson family.”Â
Once she got Imelda and Kelvin back home, her mission would be complete. Even if she owed them a life–saving debt, she felt that this should finally settle things.Â
“Alright,” Imelda said, plopping herself into the wheelchair and flipping off the brake.Â
Kelvin tried to help, but she shooed him away and waved at Edwina. “Come on, Edwina, you do it. I’m counting on you!”Â
“Sure,” Edwina said, stepping up and wheeling Imelda out of the hospital room.Â
As/Edwina turned to leave, she shot a look back at Helene, feeling like something was seriously off.Â
Helene had come all this way to pick up Imelda, but she didn’t even try to step up or make a move, just let the whole thing pass her by. That was not her usual style.Â
Kelvin walked right beside them, but he just couldn’t take his eyes off Edwina. For the first time, he understood what Imelda meant when she said, “When you fall for someone, your whole world is all about her.”Â
CalingÂ
Outside the hospital, the media was crowding around, couldn’t stop pictures of Imelda and Edwina.Â
Edwina kept her head down, barely showing half her face, while Imelda, on the other hand, was beaming, totally enjoyingÂ
the attention.Â
Edwina was the one pushing Imelda’s wheelchair out of the hospital, and Kelvin was right there with them. Anyone seeing that would have a field day with the gossip.Â
Helene stood in the hospital’s second–floor corridor, her nails digging so hard into her palms that she drew blood.Â
