Chapter 68
Edwina moved with practiced ease.

The moment she pulled the hairpin from the lock, the entire backyard was suddenly
The sudden blackout startled Errol and Imelda, who were secretly watching from the shadows.
They were just about to rush over when Edwina casually pushed the door open and walked out, looking totally unfazed.
“Mr. Gibson, Miss Lennox, are you
Edwina shook her head and said open.”
Wo alright?” Errol asked, his face full of concern.

Errol’s mouth twitched as he tried to keep his composure. “Alright, as long as you’re both safe. Sorry for the scare, Miss Lennox. I’ll have someone come fix it right away.”
Kelvin stood behind Edwina, giving Imelda a pointed look. ‘Cut it out with the childish games, he thought.
Imelda pursed her lips. ‘I’m just doing this for your sake,’ she thought.
Edwina cut Errol off. “No need to trouble anyone. I can fix it. Could you hand me a screwdriver?”
Errol looked embarrassed, but when Kelvin nodded, he fetched the screwdriver.
Edwina crouched down, quickly unscrewed the lock, and took it apart. “I used a hairpin to jam the internal mechanism just now. These smart locks automatically
cut the power to prevent fires.
“Everything inside is top–notch, so there really shouldn’t be any issues. Maybe the problem’s with the backend system for the passcode.”
Edwina put the door back together. “I can take a look at the backend for you.”
Errol and Imelda were wide–eyed, shaking their heads like crazy.
Edwina hadn’t noticed anything fishy. As far as she was concerned, nobody would bother with something so childish, so she figured the door really was broken.
“The backend system is handled by a company, and.

Edwina nodded.
She turned to Imelda. “Imelda, about that patient you mentioned, can I go see them?”
“The patient…” Imelda stammered, clearly flustered.
‘Figures, one lie always needs a dozen more to keep it going,‘ Imelda thought.
“He’s made a full recovery. It’s a medical miracle!” Errol blurted out, just making things up on the spot to bail Imelda out.
Edwina shot him a skeptical look. “He’s recovered?”
After only twenty minutes, the usually trusting Edwina finally started to question If any of this was actually true.
Kelvin hurried to change the subject. “It’s late. Let me walk you back. They’ll handle the patient.”
Watching the two of them walk away, Imelda gestured animatedly at Errol, grumbling, “This is all on you. Spouting

“Yes, ma’am,” Errol replied, nodding quickly..
“Hurry up and put plan b into action!” Imelda ordered.

Errol nodded seriously. “I’ll handle it right now!”

As they left the Gibson Estate, Kelvin’s tone was calm, but there was a trace of guilt in his eyes. “I’m sorry for what my Grandma did. I really had no idea about any of her plans.”
“I know you want to use me to fend off your Grandma’s matchmaking, but I really can’t help with that. I don’t want her to get the wrong idea about us again,” Edwina said.
‘Seriously? When did I ever use Edwina? I was being completely genuine, Kelvin thought.
But at this point, no matter how he tried to explain, she just wouldn’t understand.
Kelvin had so much bottled up inside, but right now, he just felt helpless. He wondered when Edwina would ever see how he truly felt about her.
He lowered his gaze, his voice soft. “Okay, I understand. I won’t…”
But before he could finish, Edwina caught a whiff of something strange in the air. She thought, ‘gunpowder? There is a bomb!‘
That was Edwina’s first instinct.
After just surviving an assassination attempt, she was so on edge that even the tiniest thing set her off.
“Watch out!” Edwina shouted, cutting him off.
The next second, she lunged at him, shoving him to the ground. Her head was buried in Kelvin’s chest, her back completely exposed to whatever was coming. If there was danger, she’d take the hit for him.
Edwina shut her eyes.
But the gunpowder smell quickly faded, replaced by a string of loud pops. It wasn’t a bomb at all. The smoky scent was drifting down from above.
Edwina was still sprawled across Kelvin. She turned to glance over her shoulder.
The black night sky exploded with brilliant fireworks, outshining the stars themselves.
Errol, hiding in the corner, was startled all over again.
He was just about to rush out when Imelda stopped him. “Hold it! Can’t you see the two of them hugging? Look how sweet they are. Don’t disturb them.”
Kelvin hit the hard concrete, his back aching a little, but the joy far outweighed the pain.
He relaxed completely, letting Edwina pin him down, the fireworks reflected in his eyes, just like in hers.
His laughter grew louder and more joyful.
“Edwina, did you really think those fireworks were explosives?” Kelvin teased.
Edwina was mortified. She’d rarely seen fireworks this gorgeous, let alone so many at once. For a long moment, she could- only stammer awkwardly, her cheeks burning. “Quit laughing at me!
Realizing her mistake, she quickly scrambled off Kelvin, backing away in a fluster, putting a few awkward steps between
them.
Kelvin couldn’t help but smile, not because of Edwina’s little misunderstanding, but because even when she thought they were in real danger, she instinctively threw herself in front of him to protect him.
“Edwina, why’d you rush over like that?” Kelvin asked.
The embarrassment had vanished, and Edwina was back to her usual calm. “I didn’t want you to die. Is that a good enough reason for you?”
“Why are you so afraid I might die?” Kelvin stepped in, bracing one hand on the car and boxing her in, leaving barely any space between them.
“No reason,” Edwina said flatly.
Kelvin kept his voice low, trying to be patient as he asked again.
“Kelvin, I’m running out of patience,” Edwina said, her brows furrowed.
His intense, almost demanding closeness made Edwina uncomfortable all over. She didn’t exactly hate it, but she just wanted to get away.
“Why are you so scared I might die?” Kelvin kept pushing, his voice low and teasing
Edwina swung her leg and landed a hard kick at his knee. Kelvin had to dodge. She bolted away before he could react.
“You saved me before, so I figured I’d return the favor. Isn’t that enough?” Edwina snapped.
Kelvin lowered his gaze, a smile tugging at his lips. Under the moonlight and the glow of the fireworks, he looked dangerously charming.
Edwina didn’t even spare him a glance. She said coldly, “I don’t need you to walk me home. I can get back by myself.” Her tone left no room for argument.
Kelvin watched her walk away, the grin on his lips growing wider and more obvious.

Kelvin thought, ‘How could I not be over the moon? My Edwina really does care me. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have thrown herself in harm’s way just to save me!
Inside the car, Edwina glanced back at Kelvin, still standing there beneath the fading fireworks. Her heart was a mess. Kelvin’s question kept replaying in her head.
She thought, ‘Why did I save him? Was it really just because I owed him my life?‘
Edwina found herself unable to give a clear answer.
