Chapter 12
The war–torn outskirts of Eastvalley Conflict Zone.
Juliet moved through the wounded, her clothes soaked in blood, sweat dripping from her forehead. She finally let out a breath of relief as the incoming medical staff arrived to take over.
She sat on a dusty, abandoned ammunition box, rubbing her aching calves as she gazed blankly at the distant smoke from the ongoing battle that still lingered in the air.
After leaving the country, she had intended to continue her studies.
But the trauma she’d endured back home had left her with depression, causing her to dream every night of being tortured and humiliated, her hair falling out in clumps.
It was during this dark period that she found “Operation Dawnlight,” and without hesitation, she signed up.
In the following months, she was stationed at various battlefields with the rest of the team.
Though exhausted, the sudden change in pace kept her so occupied that she barely had time to
think about the chaos in her past.
“Juliet, big news!” As Juliet was lost in thought, her new friend, Claire Mason, breathlessly ran up
to her.
Juliet snapped back to reality and quickly asked, “Is the war finally ending?”
“A ceasefire would be huge news, but that’s not happening!” Claire Mason whispered
conspiratorially into Juliet’s ear, “We’ve got a new communications expert in our area, and they say he’s super handsome and comes from a wealthy family…”
Juliet’s interest evaporated.
She had only ever truly loved one person in her life.
That person had also destroyed her.
Claire, sensing Juliet’s hesitation, smiled knowingly and said, “I’ll tell you, healing from a broken heart takes another relationship. Who hasn’t met a jerk or two in their life? You’re so beautiful and kind, I’m sure someone will come along who will truly appreciate you!”
Juliet didn’t listen to a word Claire said.

It wasn’t until Claire insisted on dragging her to see the communications expert that Juliet snapped back to the conversation. “You go ahead, I’m not interested.”
“Really? You’re not going?” Claire asked, clearly surprised.
“Yeah, I’m exhausted today.”
Seeing Juliet’s firm stance, Claire didn’t press further. “Alright, I’ll go check it out and tell you all about him when I get back!”
Night fell. Artillery shells reignited the sky.
Juliet woke with a start, throwing on a jacket and rushing out.
Wounded soldiers were being carried into tents one after another. She heard someone point in the
distance and shout, “Over there, there are more!”
There was no time to think. Juliet immediately ran in that direction.
She dodged and weaved as she ran.
Just as she got closer to the wounded, a shell exploded nearby, sending shrapnel flying toward her!
At nearly the same moment, a tall figure dashed from the side, sweeping her into his arms and
holding her tight.
