Chapter 2
Spencer Whitmore, as usual, leaned over to fasten Juliet’s seatbelt. Seeing her red–rimmed eyes, he gently comforted her, “The video was an accident. I’ll take care of it. You’re not in a good state today. Let me take you home.”
Juliet bit her lip, recalling what he had said in the office. Tears welled up uncontrollably in her eyes.
Spencer paused, then reached up to wipe her tears. After a moment, he seemed to remember
something and opened the car door. “Wait here, I’ll be back.”
Once the door closed, Juliet noticed Spencer had left his phone behind.
It sat in the console, and almost on impulse, Juliet picked it up and unlocked it by entering Charlotte’s birthday.
The phone unlocked.
Charlotte’s name glared at her from the top of his messages.
In their most recent conversation, Charlotte had asked, [Can we cut things off with her before I
return]
Spencer had replied: [Just a plaything, I never even dated her.]
Juliet’s heart contracted, and she fought back the ache in her chest as she scrolled up.
For the past two years, while Charlotte had been abroad, Spencer had called her every night, always at 8 p.m sharp.
This was also the time he’d mentioned scheduling board meetings, making sure Juliet didn’t
bother him during that hour.
Moreover, every month, Spencer transferred six–figure sums to Charlotte, with no notes attached.
Charlotte had also been quite flirtatious, sending him selfies from time to time, seeking
compliments. Spencer would reply with cute animal emojis Juliet had never seen before, reminding
her not to wear too little and to be careful not to catch a cold.
Reading through these conversations, Juliet finally understood. She never truly knew Spencer.
The tenderness he showed her was merely the tip of the iceberg of his overwhelming affection for
Charlotte.

The phone clattered back into the console as the car door reopened.
Spencer slid in, handing her a small box. “Morning–after pill. Last night was… wild. Better safe than
sorry.”
His fingers brushed her hair, tender as always. “Take it, okay?”
Juliet gripped the pill box tightly, her lips nearly bleeding from the
pressure.
If she hadn’t heard it with her own ears, she would have foolishly believed Spencer was genuinely
concerned about her.
Now, she was completely awake to the truth.
The car stopped in front of the villa, and as was his habit, Spencer leaned in to kiss her goodbye. But Juliet avoided his kiss, hurriedly unbuckling her seatbelt.
Spencer’s gaze darkened, and he forcefully pulled her into his embrace.
“Still upset about the video?”
“I didn’t film it. The hotel manager’s been fired.” Spencer lifted her chin. “Juliet, I never meant to
hurt you, and I never will. Our anniversary is coming up, and I’ll make it up to you then.”
Sometimes, lies disguised as kindness hurt far more than the truth.
Juliet’s nose burned, and she pushed Spencer away. “I’ll head inside first.”
She nearly ran into the house.
Just as she entered, she collided with her father, who was standing in the hallway.
His face was dark with fury. Before Juliet could say a word, he slapped her.
“You disgrace! Filming that trash–my face is ruined!”
“No wonder the whole school dislikes you!. Turns out it’s because you’re filthy and disgusting, attracting flies everywhere!”
After finishing his tirade, her father threw a plane ticket at her.
“I’ve booked this flight for you. Leave as far as you can, and never come back!”

Juliet picked up the ticket from the floor, her fingers trembling as though it were a final judgment, sealing her fate in this world.
Her father was ashamed of her and wanted her gone.
In truth, she didn’t want to stay either.
“I will leave,” Her voice was eerily calm. “And I’ll never return.”
Her father blinked, thinking he had misheard.
He had once arranged for Charlotte to study abroad and had urged Juliet to go with her, but Juliet had refused. After questioning her, he learned she was in love and had given her whole heart to the
man.
He had expected Juliet to refuse again.
But this time, she agreed without hesitation.
Her father finally reined in his anger and said coldly, “Charlotte’s coming back this weekend. I’m holding a welcome party for her, and you’ll be there too.”
“Hiding will only fuel the gossip.”
Juliet nodded. “I understand.”
Juliet took three days off.
In those three days, she packed everything Spencer had ever given her and listed it online for resale
at full prices.
Three days later, Charlotte returned.
Her father threw a welcome home party at the largest hotel in Ridgewood, inviting all the high–profile figures from the business world.
Among them was Spencer.
Juliet hadn’t expected to see him in such a setting. She turned to leave but was yanked back by her
wrist, pulled into a secluded area by the man.
Spencer pinned her against the wall, his hands bracing on either side of her, his warm breath

against her ear.
“Three days. No school. No texts. You even ignored our anniversary.”
“Juliet, do you have any idea how worried I was?”
