Chapter 3
Spencer Whitmore’s gaze locked onto her, clearly displeased with her sudden disappearance.
Juliet bit her lip, summoning the courage to meet his eyes. “So, Spencer, you actually care about a
meaningless hookup?”
Her usual obedient demeanor had shifted, surprising Spencer.
A wave of rebellion surged in him. He pulled Juliet close, his arm tightening around her waist.
“A hookup?”
“Just once in two years, and you call that a ‘hookup‘?”
Juliet had no idea what had gotten into Spencer. Before she could react, he grabbed her chin, leaning in for a kiss.
At that moment, a voice came from behind.
“Spencer, I thought you’d be here. Charlotte’s looking for you.”
Spencer frowned slightly, releasing Juliet as he addressed the person. “Got it, I’ll be there in a
minute.”
Juliet feigned surprise and asked, “You know my sister?”
“Know her? Their relationship is more exciting than you can imagine,” Spencer’s friend teased with a grin. “Juliet, you’ll be in for a shock.”
As they walked off, Juliet’s eyes flickered with sarcasm.
They thought she was still clueless, trying to put on a show of humiliation today.
But what they didn’t know was that she had already steeled herself, ready to sever ties with Spencer for good.
The party was in full swing when, suddenly, the lights went out.
In an instant, a spotlight shone on the stage, and Spencer, dressed in a sharp suit, entered with
Charlotte, who was wearing a white evening gown.
Juliet’s father smiled broadly, signaling for the crowd to quiet down before announcing in a loud
voice:

“Today, we’ve gathered to welcome Charlotte back from her studies abroad, and also to announce
some good news.”
“The Cohen and Whitmore families have been close for generations, and many years ago, we
arranged an engagement between Charlotte and Spencer.”
“Now that they’re in love, the engagement ceremony will take place at the end of the month. We invite all of you to witness their happiness!”
As soon as her father finished speaking, Spencer’s friends all turned to Juliet, waiting to enjoy her
shocked reaction.
But Juliet remained calm, standing quietly in the crowd with no visible emotion, as if everything happening on stage had nothing to do with her.
Spencer furrowed his brow.
In his mind, Juliet would surely lose control upon learning about his relationship with Charlotte.
But right now, she seemed unnervingly calm.
A strange restlessness rose in Spencer’s chest. Charlotte, noticing the shift, immediately asked, “Spencer, what’s wrong?”
Spencer subtly withdrew his gaze. “Nothing, just a moment of distraction.”
He knew Juliet was deeply in love with him; she couldn’t possibly be unaffected.
She was just pretending to be calm.
Juliet went to the restroom and splashed her face with cold water.
Thinking back to how she once yearned for Spencer, she couldn’t help but feel utterly foolish.
No wonder he had only touched her once in two years.
It wasn’t because he cherished her, but because he didn’t care enough to touch her.
The sweet memory of that night was nothing more than the perfect weapon for his revenge, a tool
to ruin her.
When Juliet returned to the banquet hall, her father immediately called her over.

“Juliet, come say hello to your brother–in–law.”
Juliet walked over to Spencer, her lips curling into a smile just the right amount. “Hello, brother.”
Hearing the words “brother,” Spencer’s expression stiffened.
Charlotte, completely unaware, smiled brightly. “Juliet, I just heard that Spencer is a trustee at your school. What a coincidence! If you ever need help, don’t hesitate to ask your brother–in–law. After all, we’re family now.”
Juliet clenched her teeth, each word deliberate. “I won’t trouble my brother–in–law.”
She didn’t look at Spencer, but could feel his piercing gaze, like a winter wind, making her shiver.
After exchanging a few words, Juliet prepared to leave.
But Charlotte stepped forward, linking arms with her, and feigned affection. “Juliet, it’s been so long since we’ve talked. I have so much to say.
She dragged Juliet into the lounge.
As soon as the door closed, Charlotte’s smile faded, replaced by a cold expression.
“Juliet, I heard you slept with Spencer, and the video’s been spread all over. You think using such dirty tricks will win his heart?”
“Let me tell you the truth–he never liked you. Not only does he not like you, he despises you!”
“It was I who spread the rumor about your mother being a mistress, and I’m the one who encouraged Spencer to pursue you. I just wanted to see you fall for him, only to be destroyed by him!”
