Chapter 105 The Scandal Broke–Kael PanickedÂ
“Let go of me! I can walk on my own!” Nova snapped, yanking her hand out of Kael’s grip. The thought of him touching Sloane just minutes ago made her skin crawl.Â
Kael looked at her pale face, his chest tight with guilt. He pulled her into a tight hug, ignoring her protests.Â
“I’m sorry about Sloane’s video–it came out of nowhere, I swear. I was looking for her earlier, but only to make her clarify that video at the press conference.Â
“You have to believe me.”Â
Nova wanted to laugh. Where was this urgency when he’d stood by, watching her get attacked by reporters? Where was he when Sloane clung to his arm like they were a couple?Â
She pushed him away, her eyes glistening with tears. “Kael, just… leave me alone.”Â
Kael’s brows furrowed in pain. He wrapped his arms around her waist again, his voice hoarse. “I’ll make them pay for what they did to you–a hundred times over. Please don’t be angry.”Â
But Nova’s heart was already numb.Â
She pushed him back, her eyes red, her voice trembling. “Kael, remember what you promised me this morning.”Â
With that, she turned and walked toward the press conference hall, leaving Kael standing alone.Â
He stared at her resolute back, a wave of despair washing over him.Â
He ran a hand through his hair, frustration and regret gnawing at him. Why hadn’t he rushed to her side the second the reporters surrounded her? Why had he hesitated?Â
He hated himself for overthinking it–hated that he’d been longing for her to step into his arms, to let him help her.Â
Like she used to. Back when she’d run to him every time she was wronged, trusting him to make it right.Â
But how had things come to this?Â
Kael squeezed his eyes shut, regret coiling tight in his chest. The ache was unbearable–sharp, hollow, and impossible to ignore.Â
Just then, Sloane approached, her eyes red. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, clinging to him like a lifeline. “Kael, I can’t take back what I said. If I do, my life will be over. Please don’t be so cruel to me.”Â
Kael was already furious–Sloane’s words only made it worse. He spun around and shoved her away, his voice cold. “Cut the act. What about those videos? Don’t tell me you’re innocent–did they edit themselves?”Â
Sloane stumbled backward, nearly falling. She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. “Kael, it’s not what you think. Let me explain-”Â
“I don’t want to hear it,” Kael interrupted. His mind flashed to Nova’s exhausted face, and he felt a surge of anger toward Sloane.Â
“I was going to help you. After the press conference, I planned to give your cousin a job at the company, and I even had doctors looking for a bone marrow match for your mom. But now? Forget it.”Â
Sloane froze. This was worse than any public shaming.Â
Her mom had leukemia, and Voss Private Hospital was the only place that could treat her. Without Kael’s help, her mom would die.Â
How did things end up like this…Â
Â
She fell to her knees, grabbing his trouser legs. “Please, Kael! I’m sorry! I didn’t think the video would backfire. I’ll do anything you want–just don’t let my mom suffer.”Â
But Kael didn’t soften.Â
He kicked her hand away, his voice sharp. “You’ll do exactly what I say at the press conference. If you don’t, your mom gets kicked out of Voss Private Hospital. Understand?”Â
He turned and walked away to chase Nova, leaving Sloane crumpled on the floor, sobbing.Â
She’d always known Kael was cold, but this was different–this was indifference. He’d never cared about her, not really. All he’d ever wanted wasÂ
Nova.Â
From start to finish, she’d been the only one who’d fallen too deep, who’d let her heart get tangled up in this mess.Â
How ironic!Â
A bitter laugh escaped her. If he was going to destroy her, she was going to take him down with her.Â
Sloane roughly wiped away her tears, fumbling in her bag to pull out her phone and dial a number.Â
“Finally made up your mind, then? No more second thoughts?”Â
Sloane let out a bitter laugh. “Yeah. No more hesitating. Send the video to the big screen at the press conference later…”Â
She’d wanted to leave a way out–had wanted to hold back, just a little. But they’d given her no mercy, no room to breathe.Â
If that was how it was going to be, then fine. None of them deserved to walk away unscathed.Â
Let them all go to hell together.Â
Inside the press conference hall, Nova found an empty seat and slouched into it. She didn’t have the energy to care about anything anymore.Â
A moment later, Kael sat down beside her. Nova closed her eyes, pretending to sleep–she couldn’t stand to look at him.Â
Kael’s heart ached. He leaned in, his voice soft. “Nova, I’m an idiot. I should have defended you sooner. Let me explain–about Sloane, about the misunderstanding-”Â
“Save it,” Nova mumbled, turning her head away. “I don’t want to hear it.”Â
Kael fell silent. He wanted to argue, to beg for forgiveness, but he knew it would only make things worse. He’d have to be patient. They still had timeÂ
to fix this.Â
On stage, Sloane took a deep breath. She glanced at a man in the back of the room–he was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, and he gave her a thumbs up.Â
She smiled, then looked at Nova, her eyes filled with triumph.Â
Nova’s eyes snapped open, a sharp, unexpected thud reverberating through her chest. A faint but persistent sense of unease creeped in, wrapping around her heart like a cold thread.Â
She saw Sloane’s lips move: You lose again.Â
A hand touched her shoulder. “Don’t worry,” Kael whispered.Â
Nova flinched away, Kael froze, then glared at Sloane, sending her a silent warning.Â
Sloane’s face had turned deathly pale. Even though she’d braced herself for this moment long ago, a searing, heart–wrenching pain still cut throughÂ
Â
her.Â
Reporters started shouting questions.Â
“Ms. Reed, did you really lie for attention?”Â
“Mr. Voss and Mrs. Voss helped you in work–why would you betray them?”Â
Their words cut deep.Â
Sloane gripped the remote in her hand, her voice steady. “You want the truth? Watch this video.”Â
At those words, Kael’s brows furrowed deeply, a vague sense of foreboding settling over him. The script he’d given Sloane was nothing like this!Â
Nova sat up straight, her heart racing.Â
The next moment, the big screen flickered to life.Â
Sloane took a deep breath, ready to expose Kael and ruin Nova. “As you’ll see, the real homewrecker is-”Â
But before she could finish, the crowd erupted in gasps.Â
