Kael’s gentle voice drifted out. “Don’t open your eyes yet. I’ll go get the cake.“[]
Sloane giggled. “Okay, I won’t.“[]
The man kissed her cheek as a reward. “Good girl.“[]

Nova’s already broken heart took another stab. She felt like a caught thief–hurriedly shoving the cash into the waiter’s hand before spinning to flee.[]
A memory hit her hard. This time last year, Kael had been on a business trip to Boston. He must have been celebrating Sloane’s birthday then, too.[]
How stupid she’d been–worrying if he’d get used to Boston’s weather, reminding him to eat and sleep on time…]
Nova chutched her chest. The pain squeezed so tight, she could barely breathe.
Suddenly, a melodious ringtone cut through the haze. It was Donny.
“Nova, it’s bad! Your grandma had a heart attack–we’re on the way to the hospital now! Hurry over!“]]
Nova felt like someone had hit her over the head.]
Her face turned deathly pale. Her ears rang so loud, she couldn’t make out a word more her father said.[]
She ran to the roadside like a madwoman, waving for a taxi–but it was rush hour. No empty cabs passed by.[]
Tears streamed down her face as she fumbled with her phone, dialing Kael again.[]
This time, it went straight to voicemail…]]
A message from Sloane popped up: [Nova, why do you keep making a fool of yourself? Can’t you see he doesn’t want to see you right now? Otherwise, why would he turn off his phone?]]

She bit her lip until it bled.]]
So that was it. Just to give Sloane a perfect birthday, he couldn’t even be bothered to deal with her.

Directly ahead stood Nova–disheveled, face streaked with tears, sobbing uncontrollably.[]
When she saw the car stop, a flicker of hope fit up her eyes
She walked over, voice hearse “Sir, my grandma is sick. Can you Take me to Central Hospital? I’ll pay you extra… Please. “[]

Jax quickly rolled down the window. “Ms. Hale, get in.“[]
Nova froze when she saw Jax in the driver’s seat.[]
Her eyelashes fluttered as she glanced at the back seat–where Corin sat, elegant and composed, expression as calm as still water.[]
She never thought they’d meet again like this…]
She whispered a thank–you, then hurried into the back seat.[]
On the way, Donny called again. She clung to the phone, voice hoarse and trembling, struggling to hold back sobs…]
Corin’s deep voice cut through the car’s silence.[]
He told Jax coldly, “Drive faster.“[]
Nova’s heart skipped a beat. She lifted her red, tear–streaked eyes, whispering another thank–you.[]
Jax ran a few red lights, and they reached Central Hospital quickly.[]
Nova thanked them in a rush–forgetting to ask for a contact–then stumbled out of the car and raced into the building.[]
Corin didn’t mind her haste. He was about to tell Jax to drive off when he glanced to the side.[]
A small rabbit keychain lay on the seat. It must have fallen off her bag.[]
“Mr. Thorne, that looks like the lady’s. She seems to treasure it should we take it up to her?” Jax asked, a hint of anticipation in his voice.[]
Corin gave him a calm look, then closed his hand around the soft, fuzzy rabbit. It still carried the faint, sweet scent of its owner.[]
When Nova reached the operating room, Mabel had just finished surgery–but she was still in critical condition, needing 24 hours of observation. No one knew if she’d wake up.

Nova shook her head, eyes red. When it came to life and death, why should Mabel settle for less when she could have the best?
She told Donny to stay with Mabel, then took the elevator to the top floor.[]
But before the could reach the VIP ward, a nurse stopped her.[]
“Who are you? Don’t you know no one’s allowed up here without permission? Get out!“]
Nova was about to explain when she saw through the slightly open ward door–a woman lying in bed, talking on the phone.[]

“My daughter is so capable, hooking up with the CEO of Voss Group! You’ll never have to worry about anything for the rest of her life. But wait–isn’t that CEO married? Sloane, won’t you be wronged?”

Outside the door, Nova froze–as if struck down by a serious illness. Her face was as pale as paper.]
So Kael had let Sloane’s mother–a stranger–move into the Voss family’s VIP ward. And she’d had no idea.]
She remembered when Eliza was sick. She’d asked to put her in the VIP ward, and Kael had told her only Voss family members were allowed.[]
Nova bit her already bleeding inner lip, ready to storm into the ward…[]
The nurse stopped her, annoyed. “Mr. Voss personally ordered no one to disturb the patient! If you don’t leave now, I’ll have you escorted out!“[]

Those words stabbed at Nova’s ears. She stared at the nurse, eyes red. “I’m Kael’s wife…“[]
Before she could finish, the nurse raised her voice, calling the bodyguards at the door.[]
“She’s disturbing the patient! Do your jobs!“[]
The bodyguards didn’t hesitate. They grabbed Nova’s arms, dragging her out without letting her speak, then threw her to the floor.[]
“This is a warning. If you come back, we won’t be so kind–and Mr. Voss will be even less forgiving.“]
With that, they turned and went back inside.[]
Nova’s back hit the corner of a wall. The pain made her gasp. She couldn’t say a word.[]
She clung tightly to her phone, staring at the closed door ahead–her heart utterly broken.[]
But Mabel couldn’t wait.[]
She endured the pain, hurrying down to find the hospital director’s office. At the same time, she fumbled in her pocket for her phone, calling Kael again and again.[]
Each call was met with the same cold, mechanical voice…]]
She closed her eyes, overwhelmed. All the strength drained from her body. Her vision went white for a moment, and she started to fall…
