Chapter 31 Corin Took Care of NovaÂ
Corin’s eyes were as deep as the twilight sea. He glanced at the license plate of the taxi speeding away ahead, then lowered his gaze to the unconscious woman in his arms. His brows furrowed even tighter.Â
Jaxs hurried over, gasping for breath. “Mr. Thorne, I’ve told our men to chase after it.”Â
Corin lifted the woman in his arms horizontally and walked toward the car parked not far away. In a cold voice, he recited a string of license plate numbers. “Get the police to look into that car.”Â
Jaxs nodded, but when he looked at the two of them, he froze for a second. Nova’s clothes were covered in black paint and dirt.Â
Isn’t Mr. Thorne a total neat freak? Why is he still holding her like that?Â
He paused for a moment, then followed quietly without a word.Â
After the examination and applying medication at the hospital, Corin carried Nova toward the ward and gently placed her on the bed.Â
When he tried to stand up, he found his shirt was being clutched tightly. He tugged at it, but it wouldn’t come loose.Â
Nova was in a daze, her mind still stuck on the scene where she’d been harassed by that thug–while Kael had left her behind with Sloane.Â
She sobbed in despair, her nose and eyes flushed a faint red, her whimpers soft and broken. She looked as pitiful as a wounded little animal.Â
Corin’s gaze darkened as it swept over her pitiful face. Her right cheek, which had been slapped, was swollen; the swelling had only gone down a little after the medication was applied.Â
His eyes turned cold for a moment, and he lifted his hand to wipe her tears.Â
But halfway there, he clenched his fist, reined himself in, and instead reached for the hand that was gripping his shirt.Â
The touch of her soft skin made him press his lips into a tight line.Â
“It hurts so bad… Don’t go, don’t leave me…” Nova murmured in agony. “I’m cold… It hurts…”Â
Corin’s movements faltered. He caught one word–cold?Â
His eyes scanned the bed and spotted neatly folded blankets, both thick and thin.Â
He frowned.Â
He’d never had to take care of anyone with his own hands before.Â
“I’m cold…” The woman’s soft, pitiful voice was in his ear, stirring up an unexpected mix of irritation and tenderness in him.Â
Corin frowned. Where the hell is Jaxs? Does he get stuck in a vending machine? He’s been gone way too long.Â
Suddenly, a warm sensation covered his hand, and a strange, tingling itch crept up his arm.Â
His body stiffened, and his eyes darkened.Â
In the end, he seemed to give in, half resigned. He stood up, pulled over a thin blanket, and tucked her in, his movements careful and gentle.Â
Nova’s tear–stained eyelashes fluttered slightly. “Kael, I feel so terrible…”Â
Kael?Â
Corin’s movements froze abruptly. His expression changed; he tossed the blanket aside and glared at Nova.Â

What an ungrateful woman!Â
Nova woke up half an hour later, just as a nurse came in for a check upÂ
You’re awake? The nurse helped her sit up. Your boyfriend left not long ago. Do you want me to go get him for your?Â
Boyfriend?Â
Nova froze for a second, then quickly realized the nurse must be talking about Corin. She remembered it was Corin who’d brought her to the hospitalÂ
He’d helped her againÂ
A faint nutter stirred in Nova’s chest.Â
At that moment, the ward door suddenly swung open from the outside.Â
Kael rushed in, his handsome face clearly etched with panic.Â
“Nova!”Â
He strode over to the bed, his eyes scanning her body up and down. When he noticed the obvious slap mark on her face, his gaze turned deep in an instant.Â
“Who did this to you?”Â
As he reached out to touch her, Nova instinctively turned her head away.Â
She looked at his worried expression with mixed feelings, and unconsciously, images flashed through her mind–how he’d kissed Sloane on the street while she was being harassed; how he’d been wrapped up in sweet nothings with Sloane, walking her home, while she’d nearly been dragged into a car.Â
And now he was putting on this loving, affectionate act.Â
Bitterness welled up in Nova’s heart. It was so ironic.Â
Kael’s heart ached at her avoidance, and overwhelming guilt washed over him.Â
never should’ve agreed to walk Sloane home just ‘cause she talked soft. If I’d stuck with Nova, none of this would’ve happened to her.Â
I’m sorry,” he said hoarsely. “From now on, I’ll stay with you every night.”Â
I’m a little tired,” Nova cut him off coldly. She turned over and lay on the bed, her gaze drifting aimlessly to one spot… Her mind was filled with the bizarreÂ
vents of that night.Â
Who set me up?Â
n the end, her thoughts turned to Corin–a stranger who’d helped her selflessly three or four times already. Meanwhile, her own husband had stood by like aÂ
tranger, doing nothingÂ
Cael knew she must be resenting him, so he didn’t push it. He just stayed by her side quietly.Â
falfway through, Sam brought in some food–Kael had specifically asked him to get it from the restaurant Nova usually went to. But Nova refused it coldly, then got out of bed and went to the bathroom to clean up.Â
Watching her distant hack, Kael rubbed his temples in remorse and let out a heavy sigh.Â
Nova didn’t want to be in the same room as Kael, so she stayed in the bathroom longer than usual. When she finally came out, the ward was empty.Â
Suddenly, the ward door was thrown open, slamming hard against the wall. A loud, sharp voice followed. “You must be Nova Hale!”Â
Nova was startled by the sudden commotion. Her face turned cold, and she frowned. “Who are you? This is my ward. Please get out, or I’ll call the nurse!”Â
The woman shut the door, then walked toward her step by step. She raised her hand and slapped Nova hard–Nova didn’t even have time to react.Â

You had someone hurt my daughter! She’s still lying in a hospital bed right now the woman screamed. My daughter makes a living with her fare, and you had someone hurt her face! How could you be so vicious?”Â
When she finished speaking, the room seemed to fall silent for a second.Â
Her daughter makes a living with her face?Â
Nova could roughly guess who this crazy woman was.Â
Nova’s eyes were cold and calm. She lifted her hand to touch her stinging cheek, tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear, and remained eerily composed.Â
Heather Reed had thought Nova would be a pushover–someone meek and quiet who wouldn’t even dare to speak back. Seeing Nova’s calmness, she only gretÂ
more aggressive.Â
She snorted, pointed a finger at Nova’s nose, and spat, “You’re heartless! You’ve got no conscience left! You’re just jealous that my daughter is younger, prettie and better than you! You were so jealous, you plotted to hurt her!Â
“How could you be so-”Â
Crack!Â
A loud slap cut her off, so hard that Heather’s nose was almost knocked sideways.Â
“You!” Heather clutched her cheek, staring at Nova in disbelief.Â
Crack!Â
Another slap. Nova hit her hard across the face. “Who do you think you are? And who does your daughter think she is? Barking at me like a dog? Me, plot against you two? You’re not even worth me stooping to that level!” Her cold gaze was as sharp as a blade.Â
Not worth her time? Heather had lived for nearly fifty years, and she’d never been spoken to in such a mocking way.Â
Her face turned red and then purple with rage, and she ground her teeth and lunged at Nova, trying to tear at her.Â
“What are you doing? Stop!” The ward door slammed open.Â
Kael walked in with a dark expression, his steps quick and purposeful. He pulled Heather away with one hand and stood in front of Nova to shield her.Â
When he saw the slap mark on her face–bright and ugly against her pale skin–his expression turned even darker. He first took her face in his hands, his voicÂ
filled with concern.Â
“Did she hit you?”Â
Nova pressed her lips together, her eyes a little red, then she nodded.Â
Kael narrowed his eyes, his gaze menacing.Â
When Heather saw Kael, a crafty glint flashed in her eyes.Â
She remembered her daughter telling her that Kael doted on her, going out of his way to make her happy, and that he didn’t care about his wife at all. Soon enough, her daughter would take Nova’s place. She’d even heard that Kael had given her son the position of Marketing Manager just to make her daughter happy!Â
Heather wiped away fake tears, “Mr. Voss, Nova bullied my daughter! She had someone beat her up, and now my poor daughter is lying in a ward getting treatment! How could she be so cruel? My daughter is only twenty two–how could she do that to her? She’s not even human!”Â
Nova frowned as she listened.Â
“Mr. Voss, you’re a man of integrity,” Heather continued. “You have to stand up for us!” She rambled on, not noticing the icy look on Kael’s face.Â
“Shut up!” Kael lifted his eyes, his gaze sharp as a knife.Â
Heather fell silent instantly, but she still muttered under her breath, “I’m not lying… Every word I said is true!”Â

Crack!Â
Kael didn’t bother wasting words. He just slapped her hard–so hard that Heather was stunned into silence.Â
I never hit women.” he said coldly. “You’re the first. If you dare to spout more nonsense and slander my wife again, I won’t let you get away with iff” His voice was sharp, and a fierce, dangerous aura emanated from him.Â
Nova stared at him in surprise, hardly believing he’d actually hit Sloane’s family. That was certainly a first.Â
Heather’s right cheek swelled up high, and she looked utterly disheveled, standing there in a daze.Â
“Mom!” A soft, delicate voice came from the door.Â
Sloane walked in, her face pale, wearing a hospital gown.Â
